Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The selection of specific community is one of the most important thing that
the researchers must make before and during the Capstone Project. It usually
corresponds with the people who will benefit and what they can get from it. The
factors that the researchers use in selecting community are lack of source of light,
electrical source and source of information.
Based from the needs of the communities, the researchers come up with this
Capstone Project. This prototype is a Free Energy Lamp with Functioning Clock and
Radio. It is a Free Energy because it is powered by a coil magnet that can last from
eight to ten years.
Therefore, this study was intended to help the specific community that the
researchers chose. Furthermore, the research will be done by creating a prototype
in order to fulfil the needs of that community.

Background of the Study

In selected communities in the Philippines, the largest and most important

issues are source of electricity, light, and information. These communities are
common isolated or at the top of the mountains.
There are areas that has no access to electricity. Thus, they use kerosene
lamps, candles, firewood, and makeshift gas lamps to meet their lighting needs
(OneMillionLights, 2013). These methods are commonly dangerous because most of
the families living in these communities do not have enough water to use in case of
fire. Also, without electricity they cannot use radio or television for them to be
updated about what is happening outside their community.
Government generates information should be freely available with no fees
for access. Users have already paid for this information through taxes, fees and
licenses, so should not have to purchase it a second time. As more government
information becomes available only in electronic format, significant numbers of
users will have problems getting access or will face challenges maneuvering in the
digital environment. The development of e-government should ensure that access to
information and government resources increases rather than decreases.
Being isolated is one of the biggest problems of these communities. They do
not have any access to the city or to the government. They are also prone to fires
because of what they are using to lighten their houses. Electricity cannot reach these
places, but through this project, researchers will help these people get what they
need

Objectives

This product is a tri-functional so it has three main objectives. First, a digital

clock to keep the people within the selected communities aware on what time it is
since most of them can't afford buying watch for they prioritize daily food over
others and even if they can afford it will be battery powered and it will be costly.
Second, a light to provide light to communities that are not reachable by electricity.
In exchange of the usual lamps that they use that is powered by petroleum which is
very dangerous to use inside the house specially when sleeping for most of their
houses are made out of wood. This product stops if not lessen the risk and
possibilities of burning their houses. Last, a radio to keep them aware of the latest
societal issues, to provide them other important information that they have to know
and to keep them entertained when doing different chores. In exchange to lamps,
that traditionally using gas and flame as a source of its light, we use magnets as a
source of our energy as we applied the idea of electromagnets.
