Emotional Effects of Body Shaming to the Selected Students of Saint Joseph

Academy of Dasmariñas

Chapter 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter will review some literature and study relevant to the students who
are experienced Body Shaming and will then discuss some of the important factors that results
into emotional effects of body shaming.

Foreign Literature

According to Eliza Lala (2017), body shaming may do more than someone’s feelings, and it
won’t help a person to motivate them to get the body shape that people expect. Instead, fat
shaming someone who is obese can lead to increased health risk factors and other obesity
related health problems.

It is related to our study because in this article, when a person being fat shaming it means that
they are carrying a burden where it impacts their feelings and because of that there’s a possibility that
the burden will increased the health risk factor.

According to Kris Gunnars (2019), some believe that a person who are overweight may motivate
their self to be healthy when someone makes them feel ashamed because of their eating habits.
However, scientific evidence confirm that they will tend to eat a lot when they feel terrible about
themselves.

This article relates our study because it says that their feelings are affected when someone
make them feel ashamed and instead of being healthy they will go to eat more because that’s what
they think to lessen the feeling of shamed.

According to Alendrandra Brewis and Meg Bruening (2015), body shamed directly and clearly
predicts that the students in the whole school year feel depress, but overweight students have
significantly elevated risk. how weight-related shame predicts depressive symptom levels, how being
overweight shapes that risk, and how hard for them to make friends.

It is related to our study because to feel depress affects the emotional feeling of the students
they are not able to hang out with others because they think that everybody will insult their body. So,
they prefer to distance their self and not to make any friends.

Local Literature

According to Niña Guno (2018), Many actresses are using their influence to speak against
body shaming and the netizens also shared their similar experienced. “Problem is, even your own
relatives are the ones body shaming you, thinking that it would actually help. But little did they know
that it really has a great impact on us emotionally.” (Abby Bernardo, 2018), it simply means that being
body shamed by your own relative has a big impact on their feelings than body shamed by others.

It is related to our study because abby’s experienced explain that when your relative are the
one who make you feel bad, you will feel that instead of helping you and supporting you they will just
make your feelings worst.

Having a negative body image may be a contributing factor to poor self-esteem, feelings of
perfectionism, and negative eating attitudes and behaviors which have been identified as
predisposing factors to eating disorders (Perez et al. 2010)

This relates our study because it says that having a negative body image may feel a person
low self-esteem and affecting the emotional feeling of this person by negative eating attitudes.

Stated by Roberto Prudencio Abello (2019), from a phenomenological viewpoint, fat

shaming as live experiences and encounters among overweight and obese Filipino have been
incorporated into gaze and voice of others. These fat shaming experiences were mirrored by society
and displayed in varied ways, like humor, rejection, invisibility, disembodiment, internalization, and
family pressure.

The study of Roberto Prudencio Abello says that obese Filipino receive judgement and
insulting look from other people that lead them to feel rejected by society because of what they look.
They are also pressure because they can’t meet the body image that their family expect and that
makes them to feel worst emotionally that’s why this article relates our study.
