PRINCIPLES – refers to the fundamental practices in teaching and learning

which serve as guide for teachers to effect worthy learning outcomes.

This principles is based on the intensive research conducted by

Tiberius and Tipping (1990).

As a teacher if you are going to teach a subject, then you should really know
a lot about the subject, right?

PRINCIPLE 1: TEACHERS KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECT MATTER IS

ESSENTIAL TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF IMPORTANT TEACHING
TASKS.
 A teacher’s good foundation about the subject matter is essential to
enable him/her to conduct substantial discussion.

This will allow him/her to deliver the lesson with ease and
confidence and will permit greater possibility for students to be
challenged and inspired by the manner on how he/she delivers the
information with mastery.

Having a wide range of information enables the teacher to transfer

meaningful and relevant information to the learners.

Subject knowledge has a very important role to play because high-

quality teaching rests on teachers understanding the subjects they
are teaching, knowing the structure and sequencing of concepts,
developing factual knowledge essential to each subject and guiding
their pupils into the different ways of knowing that subjects
provide: subjects create disciplined ways of knowing.

The teachers need a wide range of different skills and attitudes if

they are to assist their students achieve high outcomes. These
should include relationships with students, subject matter
knowledge and also an understanding of pedagogical processes to
develop the understanding that is required. Should a teacher fail to
have any of these, then it is likely that the learning in the
classroom will not be as successful.
