CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Although many factors come into play, flooding is primarily caused by excessive raining and

presence of high precipitation in an area that result into accumulation of water that is not immediately

drained to the sewage or to the soil. However, artificial setbacks such as inefficient drainage system,

placement of houses and infrastructures, soil erosion caused by pollution, etc. also contribute to the

formation of flooding.

The study area, Agreville Phase II, experiences flooding around 4 to 5 times a year,

most prevalent during the wet season (June to early October). To clarify, the entire study area is not

prone to flooding, but only a few specific blocks and open spaces, which will be studied for their

vulnerability. At block 16 of the subdivision, the said area has an elevation well-below sea level and its

road is visibly narrow enough that water can be funneled inside, thus trapping more during a rain. In

addition, the sewages of the said area are not well-equipped to flush out debris in an event of an

excessive rain. This in turn makes the area susceptible to heavy flooding and difficulty of disaster

response.

The researchers aim to shed light on the said issue and provide possible solutions to

existing problems concerning flooding and drainage-related problems in Agreville Phase II.

1.1 Statement of the problem.

The main problem in this study are floods in the Agreville Phase II . The floods here are

caused by many factors: heavy precipitation and pollution in the drainage system which is why it

won’t do its function once excessive rain falls to the subdivision.

The Philippines ranks third among countries most at risk for disasters, including floods,

storms, and earthquakes. Agreville Phase II is home to around 30 families and is a part of Koronadal

City. Recurrent flooding has been a problem for the people living in this subdivision. In 2019,

heavy rains often hit the city, causing damage and flooding in the place. In response, we, scholars
of PSHS-SRC, shall implement a proposal regarding this problem and later on will do a review to

determine whether our proposal is effective.

1.2 Objectives

The main objective of the study is to implement flood risk management strategies in

Agreville Phase II, Koronadal City.

The aim of this study is to discuss the dangers and problems that arise due to the floods in

Agreville Phase II. To discuss why unsegregated trash properly is the main cause of the flooding in

the area. To propose solutions on how to lessen the amount of unsegregated trash and to prevent

further accumulation of unsegregated trash in the subdivision, and to discuss other possible factors

that contribute to the flooding in the area.

1.3 Significance of the Study

The findings and results of this study will benefit the said subdivision in the sense that the

information provided can be utilized to prevent flooding in their community. Furthermore, the

results have the potential to be the key point in which people could think of other ways that will

lessen the presence of trash in their drainage and pathways.

1.4 Scope and Limitations

The study will only focus on the flooding problem of the subdivision and will only be conducted at

the Agreville Phase II of Koronadal City 9506.

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

3.1 The Study Area

The proposal is to be implemented in the Agreville Phase II subdivision of Koronadal City,

South Cotabato.

3.2 Town planning

Permission before buildings are erected are vital so that to ensure that waterways will not be

blocked. Those who will be planning to build and erect houses in extension of the subdivision

should be aware of the possibility of flooding within the area so that proper planning could be

imposed by homeowners in an event of a flood. The issues concerning the drainage system should

also be put into notice so that the LGUs will be able to act and further find more ways to lessen the

prevalence of flooding in the affected area. This include the covering of drainages so that they will

be kept free from objects that might choke them. This way, water can quickly run through if it rains

and minimize any chance of area flooding.

3.3 Vegetation

Trees, shrubs, and grass will be efficient in helping protect the land from possible soil

erosion in some areas of the Agreda Subdivision near the dirt road. The homeowners of the said

area will be encouraged to grow plants near outside their homes or within their gates to ensure that

water will not easily corrode the soil that will further cause soil depression.

Homeowners ear and at the low-elevation areas of the subdivision must be encouraged to

grow vegetation to help break the power of moving flood.

3.4 Education

Homeowners are encouraged to be educated in proper waste disposal and vegetation

tending to help create awareness on how to prevent further escalation of disaster in an event of a

flood. People will also be advised to know how their drainage system works and where they

connect/lead and how it may affect them during a heavy rain. Proper disaster response and

individual safety will also be beneficial to the homeowners to protect themselves in dire situations

in an event of heavy flooding. Preparation of essential items and creation of a map of the house are

vital in safety and recovery.

3.5 Detention basin

The creation of small reservoirs built and connected in waterways will help de-escalate the

formation of flood in the affected parts of the subdivision. They will provide temporary storage for

floodwaters. This is to ensure that in an event of flooding, water is drained into the basin first,

giving people more time to evacuate.

Building of retaining walls will also be beneficial to hold extra water during times of flood
