Virus, Prokaryotic (Archaea and Eubacteria) and Eukaryote (Algae, Protozoa, Fungi, Plants and
Animals) cells and organelles: cell wall, nucleus, mitochondria, Golgi bodies, lysosomes,
endoplasmic reticulum, peroxisomes, plastids, vacuoles, structure and function of cytoskeleton.
Biological membranes- their structure, function and chemistry, diffusion, osmosis, ion channels,
active transport, ion pumps, mechanism of sorting and regulation of intracellular transport, electrical
properties of membranes.
Organization of genes and Chromosomes: Gene families, structure of chromatin and chromosomes,
interrupted genes, unique and repetitive DNA, heterochromatin, euchromatin, insertion elements and
transposons.
Chemistry of life: Importance of Carbon, water, polymerization, permeability and self assembly,
energy and coordination of anabolism and catabolism.
Proteins- primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structure, motifs, folds and stability, Structure of
DNA and RNA. Thermal Melting and cot curves, semi crystalline, cruciform, palindromes and i-
motifs of DNA.
Scoring Matrices: Matrices for nucleic acid and protein sequences, PAM and BLOSSUM.
Pairwise sequence alignment: Needleman and Wunsch, Smith and Waterman algorithms for pairwise
alignments, gap penalties.
Multiple sequence alignments (MSA): The need for MSA, basic concepts of various approaches for

Clearing and autoclaving of glasswares. Preparation of buffers, reagents, media etc. Measurement of
Ph of a solution, Titration of Polybasic/Amino acids andevaluation of pKa’s. Estimation of nucleic
acids, protein, carbohydrate and lipid from given samples. Estimation of microbial load by total
microbial plate count and bacterial growth curve. Estimation of amylase activity (I.U.) and calculation

Genetics of viruses and bacteria, introduction to human Genome, Mendelian inheritance, sex linked
inheritance, pedigree analysis, chromosomes, linkage maps and recombination.
Mutations- molecular (gene/point) and chromosomal, factors affecting gene frequencies, phenotype
and genotype relationships.
Chromosome and banding analysis, chromosome painting, FISH, comparative genome hybridization,
functional and positional cloning.
Genetic markers, microsatellite , single nucleotide polymorphism, copy number variations, population
genetics rinciples, gene mapping, marker assisted selection in palnt and animal.
Studying gene function through protein interactions: Two hybrid screening and phage display
libraries.
DNA in disease diagnosis and medical forensic, Methods in DNA assay, Infectious disease, genetic
disease and its detection.
The ATP Cycle and glycolysis, Pentose Phosphate Pathway, Enter-Doudoroff Pathway, citric acid
cycle, electron transport chain, oxidative phosphorylation and regulation of ATP generation,

genome alignments: Artemis, MuMmer. Synteny and gene order, Comparative genomics database,

Bio- Molecules
Importance of Carbon in life, water, polymerization, permeability and self assembly, energy and
coordination of anabolism and catabolism. Basic chemistry of carbohydrates, Proteins and lipids
Liposomes and their applications, vitamins and their significance, structure of macromolecules like
protein, DNA, RNA.
Semester – II
Basics of nucleic acid hybridization: southern, northern, in situ hybridization and isolation of specific
nucleic acid sequences. RFLP, RAPD, AFLP and their usage, cloning of DNA fragments in bacterial
and eukaryotic systems, expression of recombinant proteins in bacteria and eukaryotes, vector
engineering and codon optimization, Construction oof genomic and cDNA libraries in suitable vectors
(plasmid, phage, cosmid, BAC and YAC), In vitro mutagenesis and deletion deletion techniques, gene
knock out in bacteria, transposon mutagenesis, taransposition in Drosophila, transport tagging.
Transgenic and gene knock out technology: Allelic replacement and complementation.
Semester – III
Embronic stem cells, embryonic germ cells, fetal stem cells, umbilical cord stem cells, adult stem
cells, constitutive and facultative their developmental capacity- totipotent, pluripotent, bipotent and
unipotent, hematopoietic stem cell, mesenchymal stem cells.
Multipotent tissue stem cells and their plasticity, (gut & liver stem cells, bone & cartilage stem cell,
epidermal stem cell, neuronal stem cell, pancreatic stem cell, eye stem cell).
Primordial germ cells, developmental potential of the cells of early embryo, commitment and
pluripotency. Molecular control of pluripotency and developmental of stem cells from differentiated
