Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study

Sleep is a vital necessity for people to live a healthy lifestyle in which they can function well and

think properly. It is considered to be important to body restitution, like energy conservation,

thermoregulation, and tissue recovery (Maquet, 2001). In addition, sleep is essential for cognitive

performance, especially memory consolidation (Stickgold, 2005). Unfortunately, not everyone

receives adequate amounts of sleep in order to function properly throughout the day.

Sleep is a detrimental necessity that when not enough is obtained, a noticeable depreciation in the

daily functioning of the sleep-deprived individual can have a detrimental impact on the adequate

performance of certain critical daily functions. Studies show that teenagers need 9-10 hours of sleep.

Without proper sleep, memory and ability to concentrate as well as higher cognitive functioning is

severely affected.

Gradisar et al (2008) found out that eight to nine hours of sleep is ideal sleep duration for working

memory to be fully active. The less the participants slept, the worse was the working memory. Dr. Avi

Sadeh, a lecturer at the University of Tel Aviv, conducted a study to find out just how much sleep

deprivation affected academic performance; "A loss of one hour one hour of sleep is equivalent to the

loss of two years of cognitive maturation and development." What this means practically is that a

sleepy eight grader will perform academically closer to a sixth grade level.

Lack of sleep also reduces the efficacy of immune systems and that leaves students vulnerable to

all the illnesses they are exposed to at school. Missed school days also contribute to poor academic

performances.

The consequences of sleep problems whether due to insufficient sleep or an untreated sleep

disorder can be serious. It can be very influential on a student's life. It can affect a student's

academics, behavior, and health. If students better understand the consequences of sleep deprivation,

they can plan their sleep accordingly. Thus, the study was conducted.
Conceptual Framework

People claim to understand that sleep is an important aspect of their life, yet they prove

their ignorance by refusing to get sleep, even when they are tired, because they want to get

through one more level in a game, read one more chapter, watch one more episode, or have

just a little more work to accomplish. Studies have determined that total sleep deprivation

negatively affects an individual's filtering capabilities. Though their visual working memory is

left unhindered, if one cannot filter out the information being taken in, they cannot store

anything in their memory (Drummond et. al. 2012).

Many people tend to allow themselves to be sleep deprived throughout the week because

they generally believe they can make up for the sleep on the weekend when they get a break

from the work or school week; however, during the period of sleep deprivation, their ability

to complete tasks will be hindered, causing a decrease in the quality of work primarily due to

a reduction in attention, memory, and problem solving tasks (Chiang et. al. 2014).

Paradigm of the Study

Input Process Output

By conducting a survey on the The Grade 12 students will

Sleep Deprivation Grade 12 HUMSS students. learn the effects of sleep

deprivation.
Statement of the Problem

The study aimed to recognize the effects sleep deprivation on the level of performance of

Grade 12 HUMSS students. Specifically, it answered the following subproblems:

1. What is the profile of the student?

a. Grade

b. Age

c. Gender

2. What is the level of performance of sleep-deprived Grade 12 HUMSS in the:

a. pre-test, and

b. post-test

3. Is there any significant difference between levels of performance of the sleep-deprived

Grade 12 HUMSS students in the pre-test and post-test?

Null Hypothesis

There is no significant difference between the level of performance of Grade 12 HUMSS

students in the pre-test and post-test.

Significance of the Study

The study will benefit the following:

 Students. The study will help students to realize the essence of having a proper sleep.

 The Researcher Himself. As a student, the study in his task will serve as a guide on the

effective planning with regards to sleep.

 Teachers. The information that will be derived from this study will make the teachers

fully aware about the adverse effects of sleep deprivation.
