Surfing the Recorder Internet

The author began playing recorder at the
age of 10 and was largely self taught until
formal studies with the late Bernard
Krainis in the early 1980s. During the
1980s and '90s, he appeared frequently
in concerts and recitals, often with
guitarist/lutenist Francis Perry.
Broege studied composition and keyboard
performance (harpsichord and piano)
at Northwestern University.
Since 1972, he has served as
organist and director of music at
First Presbyterian Church in Belmar, NJ.
Broege's compositions number into the
hundreds and have been performed
throughout the Us., Canada, Europe,
Asia and Australia. His recorder
compositions include Partita Marietta
and Meadows (both published by
Polyphonic Publications) as well as
Songs, Dances and a Chorale
for recorder and guitar, Two- Part Elegy
for La oue Davenportfor solo recorder,
or two recorders, and Sonata da chiesa
for recorder and organ (all published
by Allaire Music Publications).

It has been awhile since AR surveyed
the wonders of the Internet with afocus
on the recorder. The virtual world of
recorders-including makers, players,
composers, publishers, retailers and
teachers-is too vast for anyone article.
Instead of attempting to be comprehensive,
I will try to sort out some worthwhile
paths to travel, and highlight some of
the better sites.
General Sites
Launching onto the seas of the
recorder web is made easier by a
visit to the "mothership" of recorder
sites, the Recorder Home Page, found
at www.recorderhomepage.net:
This vast resource, compiled by
Nicholas Lander, has lists of pub-
lishers, instrument makers, com-
posers, music-you name it. Web
addresses are provided for easy link-
ing. Browsing through the lists inevi-
tably reveals unknown pieces, forgot-
ten bits of recorder lore, or overlooked
names. The world of the recorder,
with all its wonders, is found here.
The excellent site of Stichting
Blokfluit-WH-W.blokfluit.org-is
also worthwhile, with useful lists and
fine opportunities for user interaction.

Less serious, perhaps, but lots
of fun is Jim Phyper's delightful
Recorder Music Listening Page.
This is a good place for beginners
to start out. The site includes a nice
selection of tunes, many played by
Phyper himself with synthesized
accompaniments of his own devising.
There are beautiful pictures, and lots
more. Visit at www.solerhaven.org/
RecorderMusic.
The Recorder Players Page,
maintained by iklas Saers, is also
worth a look. On this site, one can find
music, recorder makers and players,
and other nice bits of information.

It should be worthwhile to
keep an eye on a "work in progress,"
the European Union's digital library
found at WH-W.europeana.eu.
This on-line library brings together
books, maps, recordings, photo-
graphs, archive documents, paintings
and films. On the home page, type
"recorder" into the search box. Major
European museums are contributing
to the project. When completed it
should be a wonderful cultural
resource.

rently undertaking a project known
as the Danish National Digital Sheet
Music Archive. New titles are added
regularly. Much of the available flute
music is suitable or easily adaptable to
the recorder. Works of c.p E. Bach,
Quantz, Platti, Vecchi and many
others are available.
Interesting sheet music for
folk dancing can be found at
www.phantomranch.net. The
Pinewoods International Collection,
with over 400 traditional dance tunes
from around the world, is available
here. Also here are Richard Geisler's
folk dance collections produced for
The Village & Early Music Society:
The four volumes include a wealth
of information as well as the music.

former Yugoslavia, Greece, Mace-

I am fond of the web site of
Canadian recorder maker Jean-Luc
Boudreau, at www.boudreeu-Ilutes

delightful Ganassi treble in G, but
also for his link to a five-minute mini-
documentary on recorder making on
YouTube (the one in which he was
interviewed for the Discovery Chan-
nel program "How it's Made"), as
well as his schematic drawing for his
new Denner alto. Boudreau lists all
his prices in both U.S. dollars and
Euros, which is helpful to those
searching for general price ranges of
fine hand-made recorders as well as
"production line" instruments.
Good pictures and simple naviga-
tion through the site are pluses.
The Prescott Workshop, found

for Thomas Prescott's fine recorders.
I assume all AR readers are
familiar with the wonderful web site of
the Von Huene Workshop, but, just in

worth a visit. A wealth of information,
lots of instruments, and general good
spirits characterize this site.
Remember that a large list of
recorder makers, with web addresses,
is available at The Recorder Home-
page. Clicking on an unfamiliar name
may prove interesting-and it is also
rewarding to see what familiar makers
have been up to recently.

You can find "Recorder-Radio" at

community for players and friends of
the recorder." The site is in German,
but it is easy to use. Recorder-Radio
has interesting pieces and perform-
ances. As I type this, I am listening to
Ensemble Diferencias on Recorder-
Radio performing a Medieval chant in
strikingly good sound. There is a fine
mix of performers and styles always
playing-a recorder lover's delight.
The site
www.musipedia.org
is a search engine
for melodies.
Type "Chromatia
your search engine and you will dis-
cover a free trial download of a highly
usable tuner you can add to your com-
puter. It has a wide range of historical
temperaments, plus modern ones, and
sounds a clear electronic tone through
a full octave in whatever range you
select. You can even add your own
custom scales and temperaments.
The site www.musipedia.org
is a search engine for melodies. You can
type in, or play on a virtual keyboard
like flash piano, the notes of a tune you
want to identify; Musipedia will find
some possible choices. I found that it
easily identified the opening phrases
