CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter provides the background of the study, statement of the

problem, objectives of the study, significance of the study, the scope and

limitations and definition of terms. This paper focuses on the effects of mobile

phone to students’ mental health.

1.1 Background of the Study

Mobile phones have become increasingly popular in recent years,

especially in young generation. It is a wireless handheld device that allows users

to make and receive calls and to send text messages, among other features.

In America, one of the biggest habitual actions has become the mobile

phone addiction. People especially the teenagers spend most of their time on

their phones with only so much time in a day. (Lavecchia, 2018). With the

growing use of mobile phones, teenagers experienced severe depression,

anxiety, and suicide attempts (Tribune, 2018).

Indeed, in Manila, Philippines, the increasing number of young adults who

are addicted to a mobile phone is undeniable. Too much usage of a mobile

phone of these teens puts their brain in a highly suggestible sleep-like hypnotic

state that results to a reduction of higher brain functioning. It also results in

mental disorders like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD (Jimeno,

2017).
1
More recently, researchers who study the relationship of mobile phone

use and mental health have also found that excessive or “maladaptive” use of

our phones may be leading to greater incidences of depression and anxiety in

users (Rosenfeld, 2017).

The growing popularity of young adults who are engaged to a mobile

phone is indisputable. Moreover, as claimed by Rodriguez (2015), there are

positive effects of using a mobile phone such as it improves the quality of

people's lives, promotes emotional being and a tool for treating mental health

issues. On the other hand, heavy use of mobile phones can cause to mental

health issues such as anxiety, depression, insomnia and suicidal.

Heavy use of mobile phones greatly affects the students' mental health.

Hence, this study aims to identify the reasons why students are likely to use

mobile phones and its effects to their mental health both positive and negative.

Additionally, this study will discuss the perceptions of the students regarding

mobile phones and the changes happened to them when they started using it.

Furthermore, the reasons for all of these are for the researchers' present

knowledge on the said topic towards the reader.

2
1.2 Statement of the Problem

In today's generation, students spend most of their time on mobile phone

which affect their mental health positively and negatively. Using mobile phone

has been part of students' live.

Thus, this research centralized on the following research questions:

1. What are the perceptions of students on mobile phone?

2. What are the features of mobile phone connecting to mental health?

3. How does mobile phone affect the students' mental health?

1.2 Significance of the Study

The result of this study was deemed important to the following:

 To Students, this study will help the students to be aware on what will be

the effects of too much usage of mobile phone on their mental health. It

will also help limit themselves realize that they should be responsible

enough in using mobile phone.

 To Parents, this will help the parents by knowing that mobile phone could

affect their child's mental health. It will also help them for it will give

knowledge to always guide their child to keep them from mental illness

such as depression, anxiety or stress.

 To Teachers, this research will benefit the teachers to understand why

their students use mobile phone and to know the possible effects of too

3
much usage of this. Additionally, this will serve as a guide on how they will

limit their students in using their phones properly.

1.4 Scope and Limitations

This paper focused on identifying the positive and negative effects of

using mobile phone on students' mental health. Additionally, the researchers

determined the perceptions of the students regarding mobile phones and the

changes that happened to them when they started using this kind of device.

Lastly, this study was limited to (40) forty selected Senior High School students

from The Nazareth School who use and has mobile phone.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter includes the review of related literature for the study. All of

the sources are relevant to the study in the sense that they cover cases

significant to the study that are ought to be discussed.

Perception of Students on Mobile Phone

Students describe their phone as a “warm blanket” that helps them stay

connected and not miss an update or “like” (Cohan, 2016). Cohan also reported

that students will reject plans with friends so that they can “stay with their phone”

(2016).

Many researchers have pointed out that students have become addicted

to their phones (Burak, 2012) and continuously check texts, social media

accounts, and web surf. This can cause anxiety and frustration (Elhai, 2017).

The typical student spends between eight and ten hours a day on his/her

cellphone (Roberts, 2016). These students spend the majority of the time texting,

followed by email, Facebook, web browsing, and listening to music.

In today's generation, mobile phone is an important tool for students to

stay connected or updated with happenings on social media. Students spend

most of their time on their mobile phone that they tend to stay up late just to

check their social media accounts as well as to play games. With this, students

become addicted to their phones that lead to mental illness such as anxiety and

6
frustrations. Indeed, mobile phone affects the student's mental health in a

negative way.

Features of Mobile Phone Connecting to Mental Health

Today’s consumers are spending over 85 percent of their time on their

smartphones using native applications, but the majority of their time 84 percent is

spent using just five non-native apps they’ve installed from the App Store (Perez,

2015).

The mobile app landscape is still dominated by social networking, games,

and music. The social networking, games, and radio categories account for

nearly half of the total time spent on mobile apps. Facebook is the number one

application in terms of both audience size and share of time spent. Facebook,

Google, Apple, Yahoo, Amazon, and eBay dominated the supply of the most

popular mobile apps. These six brands account for 9 of the top 10 most used

apps, 16 of the top 25, and 24 of the top 50 (Scott, 2014).

Most of the students spend most of their time with their phone. Students

use a mobile phone to be active on different social media, like facebook, twitter,

and messenger. Students also like to use a mobile phone because they can play

music, they can take some pictures, and they can surf the internet anytime.

These features of a mobile phone make the students to be engaged with it.

Hence, over usage of a mobile phone can lead to addiction and it can affect their

mental health.

7
Forster (2015) stated that every great smartphone needs a camera, and

you will see camera specs are given in MP (which stands for Mega Pixels). In

general, the higher the number of MP, the better your pictures will be, since the

camera will be able to capture more fine detail. Top end devices are getting over

20 MP at this point, though 8 MP cameras are fine for most people. He also

mentioned that traditionally phones have connected to the internet using 3G

technology, but 4G is newer and gives faster internet speeds. A phone with 4G

capabilities can give you a better internet experience.

Mobile Phone Affecting the Students’ Mental Health

According to Hadfield “mental health is the full and harmonious functioning

of the whole personality”. A mentally healthy person can live a fuller, happier,

harmonious and effective life. It describes either a level of cognitive or emotional

well-being or an absence of a mental disorder. From perspectives of the

discipline of positive psychology or holism, mental health may include an

individual's ability to enjoy life and procure a balance between life activities and

efforts to achieve psychological resilience. Mental health is an expression of our

emotions and signifies a successful adaptation to a range of demands.

Adolescents of modern period are spending unnecessary and maximum

time with cell phone. They are heavy users of this medium. It seems difficult for

them to do their daily activities in due time, poor fragmented sleep, late bed time

and early wake up, seriously affect their mental health, learning capacity and

quality of life (Fallone, 2006). As adolescents use of this medium increased,

8
research has been conducted to explore its effect on their mental health and

quality of life. Hardell (2002) concluded, “For people who have used cell phones

for ten years or longer, and when they are used mainly on one side of the head,

the risk of malignant brain tumor is doubledand is even higher for person with

first use before the age of 20 years”.

Soderqvist (2008), explored the assess use of wireless phones and health

symptoms in adolescents and they showed that frequent mobile phone users

reported health complaints, such as tiredness, stress, headache, anxiety,

concentration difficulties and sleep disturbances. The effect of radiation exposer

from cell phone on central nervous system such as Alzheimer, migraine has

been found positive association with substance abuse such as anxiety, insomnia

and depression, when they are without their cell phones. Frequent cell phone use

has been associated with stress, sleep disturbance and symptoms of depression

(Labode, 2011).

Youth is more inclined towards using mobile phones for activities other

than communication than older generation (Mackay, 2007) because in

adolescence stage, people are more susceptible to changing fashion trends and

style, building them more Tech savvy which creates certain behavioral disorders.

According to Reddy (2018), the science is overwhelming linking smart

phone use to rising depression and suicide rates, especially among teens.

One study, found that teenagers who are glued to their smart phones are

significantly less happy. Researchers determined that teenagers who excessively

9
used on-screen devices exhibited lower levels of happiness than teenagers who

spent more time engaging in non-screen activities.

Our cell phones also give us 24/7 access to social media, which can

also play a role in depression (Courtney, 2017). The more individuals use the

smart phone, the more they become dependent on it and begin to experience

associated problems (Hong, 2012). The diagnostic criteria of smart phone

addiction were derived from criteria of material abuse according to the Diagnostic

and Statistical Manual (DSM IV). The same criteria used for diagnosing both

Internet and Smart phone addictions consider these dependencies a disorder.

People with this disorder have difficulty controlling their smart phone use and

therefore encounter social, psychological and health problems(Heron, 2004).It

may be that individuals with higher anxiety/depression use phone devices more

intensively or that using devices more intensively can eventually lead to the

development of anxiety/depression.

Smartphone addiction is common with individuals feeling an urgent need

to keep in touch with others at all times. This underscores the need to raise

awareness of the negative effects of smart phone overuse on sleep, health,

concentration and comprehension as well as provide information on the

consequences of smart phone overuse that may lead to withdrawal, depression,

and destroy social relationships (Hiscock, 2004).

Smartphone overuse was found to cause social isolation, lack of privacy,

inability to carry out multiple tasks, as well as negative health effects (Hatch,

2011).Anon (2016) reported that Smartphone abuse lead to car accidents and

10
destroy lives of too much peoples. Addiction to technology at an early age also

decreases children physical activities, leading to obesity. Experts believe that a

kid should not have smart phone before 7 years as it has bad impacts on his

mental health and school performance.

Shambare described that mobile phone use is addictive and habitual, the

biggest non-drug addiction. Other studies have suggested that excessive mobile

phone use may be correlated with social anxiety, depression, and introversion”

(Caplan, 2007).

According to Rodriguez (2015), when it comes to mental health,

technologies such as smart phones and social media networks are almost

always discussed in terms of the dangers they pose. Alongside concerns

expressed in the media, some experts believe that technology has a role in the

rising rates of mental health problems. However, there is also evidence

suggesting that smart phone could actually be good for mental health.

However, focusing only on the negative experiences of some people

ignores technology’s potential as both a tool for treating mental health issues and

for improving the quality of people’s lives and promoting emotional well-being.

For example, there are programmes for depression and phobias, designed to

help lift people’s moods, get them active and help them to overcome their

difficulties. The programmes use guided self help-based cognitive behavioural

principles and have proven to be very effective (Rodriguez, 2015).

As stated by Vineetha (2018), students performed more poorly on tasks

requiring focus when they received a text notification or a phone call during the

11
task even if they did not interact with their phone. As noted by Chua (2014),

mobile phone helps everyone to improve their learning skills.

Mobile games have been used to provide therapy for adolescents.

Because mobile games are fun and can be used anonymously, they offer an

alternative to traditional therapy. For example, a fantasy-themed role-playing

game called SPARX has been found to be as effective as face-to-face therapy in

clinical trials.

Researcher David Haniff has created apps aimed at lifting the mood of

people suffering from depression by showing them pleasing pictures, video and

audio of, for example, their families. He has also developed a computer game

that helps a person examine the triggers of their depression. Meanwhile, mobile

phone apps that play subliminal relaxing music in order to distract from the noise

and worries of everyday living have been proven to be beneficial in reducing

stress and anxiety (Page, 2015).

According to Reddy (2018), overuse of wireless mobile devices (WMDs)

may be associated with a form of psychological dependency, of which a

prominent feature may be anxiety arising from separation from these devices.

In today’s time, students are more engaged with mobile phones which

made them addicted. One of the reasons why students are being addicted to a

mobile phone is because of online games such as Mobile Legends, Pubg and

Ros. Also, students always want to be updated with social media as the everyday

use of it has become an important part of their lives. Mobile phones give the

12
students access to social media, which can also play a role in depression. In

addition, a mobile phone can also help to reduce stress and anxiety through

phone apps that play relaxing music and inspirational videos. Thus, mobile

phone greatly affects the students’ mental health positively and negatively.

All of these information are relevant to the study to further have an idea

and background to be able to satisfy the objectives of this paper. Hence, proving

the readers clear understanding and knowledge about the topics and on the

questions raised in this study.

Related Studies

Due to the ubiquity of mobile phones around the globe, studies are

beginning to analyze their influence on health. Prior work from developed

countries highlights negative mental health outcomes related to overuse of

mobile phones. However, there is little work on mental health impacts of mobile

phone use or ownership in developing countries. This is an important gap to

address because there are likely variations in mental health impacts of mobile

phones between developing and developed countries, due to cultural nuances to

phone use and distinct variations in financial models for obtaining mobile phone

access in developing countries (Pearson, 2017).

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH FRAMEWORK

Theoretical Framework

Sociological Theory of mental health is the "Labelling Theory" of Scheff

(1999). Scheff applies this labelling theory to the area of mental health. He said

that mental illness can be considered as deviant behavior but unlike other

deviant behaviors, mental illness is non-conformity to the residual rules.

Additionally, he told that residual rules are norms that are not explicitly classified

as either prescribed or proscribed. In other words, mental illness is not similar to

other illness that is easy to treatable.

Scheff's theory has been very influential in conducting this research. He

discussed that mental health is an illness that is hard to cure but it can be

avoided. Additionally, using mobile phone is becoming worse as a fact that it can

affect the students' mental health. It is evident that Scheff's theory is a basis that

14
mental health can be damaged by the use of mobile phone. This theory is also

important to the study to know if using mobile phone has a negative view from

social audience.

Operational Framework

Research Methodology

Research Design

For this study entitled “Effects of Mobile Phone to Students’ Mental

Health” the researchers used a qualitative design. Shank (2002) defines

qualitative research as “a form of systematic empirical inquiry into meaning”.

According to Calderon (2008), as cited by Alberto et.al (2011), descriptive

method, also known as statistical research, it describes data and characteristics

about the population or phenomenon being studied.

Research Locale

This study was done in The Nazareth School. The researchers asked

questions and had an interview to the respondents, which are the Senior High

School Students of The Nazareth School.

Sources of Data

The primary sources of this study came from the answers of the

respondents or the interviewees from the senior high school students of The

Nazareth School. The secondary sources of this study came from internet

websites and from the books or magazines.

16
Research Method

The researchers used an interview questions as one of the data collection

instrument of this study. The interviewees in this study are the senior high school

students of The Nazareth School.

Data Analysis

With the data gathered from the responses of the interviewees, the

researchers finally analyzed the result to further elaborate and understand the

study as well as extract an interpretation out of each response in the research

question

Ethical Consideration

Making sure that no ethics are broken is part of a research (Akaranga,

2016). While conducting the research, it was ensured by the authors that this

research meets the basic ethical principles of research.

First and foremost, none of the data was altered to give a result favourable

to the researchers’ beliefs. Likewise, said data and the identities of the

interviewees were kept confidential. Moreover, though encouraged, it was

assured that if the respondents did not have the spare time to answer the

questionnaires, they did not have to respond. The same may be said about

providing their identity in the questionnaire, wherein their name was optional.

17
CHAPTER V

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter includes the results and discussion of the gathered data. For

this section, the data were arranged and analyzed according to the research

questionnaires of this research paper. Moreover, the interviewees of the study

are the senior high school students of the Nazareth School.

5.1 Perceptions of Students on Mobile Phone

Table 5.1 showed the perceptions of senior high school students of The

Nazareth School on mobile phones. This discussed the frequency and mean.

Table 5.1 Perceptions of Students on Mobile Phone

The researchers found out that approximately 45% of the students define

mobile phone as one of the useful and an effective device use for communicating

with other people. With mobile phone, students can have an easy access with

their friends, relatives and teachers. Meanwhile, approximately 30% of the

18
interviewees noted that mobile phone is important because it has many things to

offer like internet, dictionaries and calculators which are essential for learning. In

other words, mobile phone is an all in one tool which a student can carry anytime

and anywhere he wants. Moreover, 5 out of 40 students claimed that mobile

phone is a device which entertains them. Students spend most of their time on a

mobile phone as they enjoy playing both online and offline games such as Mobile

Legends, Rules of Survival, PubG, Candy Crush and Wordscape. Furthermore,

However, 3 out of 40 interviewees noted that mobile phone is a daily necessity

because it is the perfect way for them to stay connected with others and provide

them with a sense of security. However, approximately 5% of the students

describe mobile phone as a portable telephone that has different specifications

which engaged them to buy and use it. Students always look first for the specs of

a mobile phone and check if it is latest or updated.

There are many changes that happened to the behavior of the students

when they started using mobile phone. Students became more updated and

aware on what is happening on their society. It also makes them more

approachable and let them interact with other people easily. On the other hand,

some of them became more reliant and dependent on mobile phones all the time.

Furthermore, students became lazy and tend to forget to accomplish other

important tasks or school works because they are busy on their mobile phone.

Moreover, students tend to sleep late at night because they enjoy surfing the net

as well as playing games.

19
As stated by Cohan (2016), students describe their phone as a “warm

blanket” that helps them stay connected and not miss an update or “like”. Cohan

also reported that students will reject plans with friends so that they can stay with

their phone.

Mobile phone is one of the effective tools that students use to stay

connected with their family together with their friends. Also, it helps them to stay

updated to the present issues in the society and happenings on social media.

Indeed, mobile phone is already part of students’ life. Students see their mobile

phone as a daily necessity which makes their lives more convenient.

5.2 Features of Mobile Phone Connecting to Mental Health

Table 5.2 assisted the researchers to find out the features of mobile phone

connecting to mental health. Moreover, this discussed the frequency and mean.

20
A total of 18 out of 40 students noted that the features of mobile phone

that they used the most are the applications connecting to social media. These

are Facebook, Messenger, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube. Students use these

kinds of applications not only because it is in trend but these will help them to

become updated and also through these applications they can easily connect

with other people. Meanwhile, approximately 25.% of the interviewees answered

that the feature they consider about a mobile phone is its camera as they love to

take selfies and to capture of different sceneries as well as the beautiful places.

Forster (2015) stated that every great smartphone needs a camera, and you will

see camera specs are given in MP (which stands for Mega Pixels). In general,

the higher the number of MP, the better your pictures will be, since the camera

will be able to capture more fine detail. Top end devices are getting over 20 MP

at this point, though 8 MP cameras are fine for most people. Moreover, 7 out of

40 interviewees stated that they are fascinated to a mobile phone because of the

online games. Students spend too much of their time on playing online games

because it lessens their boredom, stress and a way to avoid depression.

Furthermore, 5 out of 40 students claimed that the feature of a mobile phone that

they like is the network support specifically when it is in fourth generation or 4G.

Students also consider this feature because it better to use as it provides a faster

connection. Forster (2015) mentioned that traditionally phones have connected to

the internet using 3G technology, but 4G is newer and gives faster internet

speeds. A phone with 4G capabilities can give you a better internet experience.

21
The researchers found out that 75% of the students spend most of their

time in using a mobile phone. Students claimed that through the use of mobile

phone it lessens their boredom and also via social media they become updated

on what is happening inside and out the country. Students also use mobile phone

in academic purposes and for emergencies. Mobile phone is a very useful device

for the students in this modern time as it helps the students to have an easy

communication with others. Additionally, mobile phone can be a stress reliever

for the students because with this they can play online or offline games that gives

them entertainment. These are the main reasons on why students use mobile

phone.

As indicated by Perez (2015), today’s consumers are spending over 85

percent of their time on their mobile phones using native applications, but the

majority of their time 84 percent is spent using just five non-native apps they’ve

installed from the App Store.

Table 5.3 Effects of Mobile Phone to Students’ Mental Health

The researchers discovered that there are positive and negative effects of

using mobile phone to students’ mental health. A total of 10 out of 40 students

noted that they experience anxiety when they are separated from their mobile

phones. According to Reddy (2018), overuse of wireless mobile devices (WMDs)

may be associated with a form of psychological dependency, of which a

prominent feature may be anxiety arising from separation from these devices.

Meanwhile, 6 out of 40 students answered that this device makes them

destructed on their studies because they are more focused on their mobile

phone. With the excessive use of mobile phone it affects the students’ mental

health in a way that they cannot think carefully. As stated by Vineetha (2018),

students performed more poorly on tasks requiring focus when they received a

23
text notification or a phone call during the task even if they did not interact with

their phone. Moreover, 5 out of 40 interviewees claimed that they experience

depression because sometimes they see negative post on social media about

them which makes them sad and hurt. According to Reddy (2018), the science is

overwhelming linking smart phone use to rising depression and suicide rates,

especially among teens. One study, found that teenagers who are glued to their

smart phones are significantly less happy. Researchers determined that

teenagers who excessively used on-screen devices exhibited lower levels of

happiness than teenagers who spent more time engaging in non-screen

activities.

However, 12 out of 40 interviewees claimed that by using mobile phone it

broadens their knowledge as it provides a source of information. By the use of

some learning applications and games it helps the students gain knowledge and

keeping their mind sharp. As noted by Chua (2014), mobile phone helps

everyone to improve their learning skills. Furthermore, by means of using mobile

phone students witness some pleasing pictures, videos and find relaxing music

which helps them to reduce their stress. As claimed by Page (2015), researcher

Haniff has created apps aimed at lifting the mood of people suffering from

depression by showing them pleasing pictures, video and audio of, for example,

their families. He has also developed a computer game that helps a person

examine the triggers of their depression. Meanwhile, mobile phone apps that play

subliminal relaxing music in order to distract from the noise and worries of

everyday living have been proven to be beneficial in reducing stress and anxiety.

CHAPTER VI

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Conclusion

This research entitled “Effects of Mobile Phone to Students’ Mental

Health” the researchers used a qualitative design. As cited by Shank (2002),

qualitative is a form of systematic empirical inquiry into meaning. Additionally, the

researchers used a descriptive design in conducting this study. According to

Calderon (2008), descriptive method describes data and characteristics about

the population or phenomenon being studied.

Sociological Theory of mental health is the "Labelling Theory" of Scheff

(1999). Scheff applies this labelling theory to the area of mental health. Scheff's

theory has been very influential in conducting this research as he discussed that

mental health is an illness that is hard to cure but it can be avoided. Additionally,

using mobile phone is becoming worse as a fact that it can affect the students'

mental health.

Results showed that students use a mobile phone mainly for

communication. It is a device which helps them to be connected not only with

their family but also with their friends. Additionally, there are features of mobile

phone that students mostly use such as applications connecting to social media,

camera and mobile games. These features made the students spend most of

their time on their mobile phone. Moreover, heavy usage of mobile phone affects

25
the students' mental health positively and negatively. It helps the students to

reduce their stress because of the pleasing pictures, videos and relaxing music

that they can see and hear on the internet. Also, it broadens their knowledge as

mobile phone provides a source of information. On the other hand, it was evident

that too much usage of mobile phone can bring negative effects to one's mental

health such as students may experience anxiety, depression and destruction

because of the negative posts or comments they see about themselves on the

social media.

26
Recommendation

The researchers would like to recommend this research study to the following.

A. For the students, they can practice a daily routine of having at least 3-4

hours usage of mobile phone to avoid some mental illness caused by too much

exposure to a mobile phone. Moreover, students should use their time wisely.

B. For the parents, they can do a primary action regarding the too much usage

of a mobile phone of their children such as giving rules and encouraging them to

do some outdoor activities. In addition, they should guide them properly in using

a mobile phone and be aware of the mental illness that their children may get

from the heavy use of mobile phone.
