NATURAL DISASTER

A major adverse event resulting from

natural processes of the Earth; floods,
hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanic
eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, other
geological processes can cause loss of
life, damage property, typically leaves
some economic damage.
EARTHQUAKES
EARTHQUAKES
Result of a sudden release of energy
in the Earth’s crust that creates
seismic waves. Earthquakes are
caused by slippage within geological
faults.
SINKHOLES
SINKHOLES
When natural erosion, human mining
or underground excavation makes the
ground too weak to support the
structures built on it, the ground can
collapse and produce a sinkhole.
VOLCANIC ERUPTION
VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS
Volcanoes can cause
widespread destruction and
consequent disaster in several
ways. The effects include the
volcanic eruption itself that
may cause harm.
FLOODS
FLOODS
A flood is an overflow of water that
‘submerges’ land. Flooding may
result from the volume of water within
a body of water, such as river or lake.
TSUNAMIS
TSUNAMIS
Also known as ‘seismic wave’ or ‘tidal
wave’ in a water body caused by the
displacement of a large volume of
water, generally in an ocean or a large
lake.
LIMNIC ERUPTIONS
LIMNIC ERUPTIONS
A limnic eruption occurs when a gas
suddenly erupts from deep lake water,
posing the threat of suffocating
wildfire, livestock and humans.
BLIZZARDS
BLIZZARDS
Is a severe snow storm with winds in
excess of 35mph and visibility of less
than a ¼ mile for more than 3hrs.
Blizzards can also occur after
snowfall when high winds cause
whiteouts and snowdrifts.
WILDFIRES
WILDFIRES
Wildfires are usually triggered by
lightning or accidents and often go
unnoticed first. They can spread
quickly and are especially destructive
if they occur near forests, rural areas,
remote mountain sites, and other
DROUGHT
DROUGHT
A drought is a normal, reoccuring
weather event that can vary in
intensity and duration by region of
the country. Drought occurs when
there is lower than average
precipitation over a significant period
TROPICAL CYCLONE/TYPHOON
TROPICAL CYCLONE/TYPHOON
A rapidly rotating storm system
characterized by a low-pressure
center, a closed low-level
atmospheric circulation, strong
winds, and a spiral arrangement of
thunderstorm that produce heavy
rain.
