Problem Statement

The use of suspension should be on optimum level so as to

increase the ride comfort.
The parameters are set where the vehicle can survive any
terrain with ease.
Thus to increase comfort level and application range of the
vehicle we are designing suspension which can travel all
terrains.
This can be done by controlling the camber and proper
transmission of loads accordingly.
Introduction
Utility-Task Vehicle is one of the category in vehicles which is
capable of maneuvering all type of terrains.

It has a efficient ratio of unsprung and sprung mass of the vehicle.

An UTV can comprise of single seat or dual seat as per the

manufacturer.

Because of their tantalizing aesthetics ,versatile usage- UTV’s are

used in variety of industries which include border patrol, surveying,
adventure activities, etc.

Sports variant of the same are also manufactured keeping

performance way up ahead than utility.
Need of Suspension Design
Suspension designs changes according to the application.
Even though the suspension is designed for all terrains but
does consider size of the vehicle
The application range can vary from off roading to military
usage so the design is not same for all the application
The major sector in this is the luxury of ride and the ease of
handling a vehicle.
Objectives of Suspension
Design and its scope
 To provide greater travel.

 To reduce un-sprung mass for lower inertia loads

 To minimize plunging of cv joints in rear design

 Provide better handling at cornering

Types of Suspensions

Dependent suspensions system

Such suspension performs as a rigid beam in
which motion of one wheel affects the
other wheel

Independent suspensions system

These are not connected with a rigid beam

altogether, thus the nature of forces of one wheel
does not transfers to the adjacent wheel
Independent suspensions

Types of links/ mountings

 Double wishbone
 Macpherson strut
 Swing axle
 Multi link suspension
 Trailing / semi trailing suspension
H arm and A arm
The mounting of the suspension changes as we select any
of the above type.

H arm: It consists of arm structure which resembles H and

a support link from the chassis.
A arm : it consists of two wishbone bone like structure
holding the wheel with connecting knuckle.
Features of Double Wishbones

 The double wishbone suspension provides the engineer

more design choices than some other types do.

 Wheel motion can be optimized

 They provide increasing negative camber gain all the

way to full jounce travel
Features of H-arm

 Better lateral load handling capacity at turning.

 Better control over camber through out wheel travel

 Better anti Squat properties

 Plunging of shafts minimizes

Method of design

 Vehicle Dimensions
 Suspension System Parameters
 Design of suspension Geometry
 Design and modelling of suspension component
 Analysis of suspension components
 Selections of shock absorbers / struts
 Testing of the vehicle
Applications
 In Defence Services like army and air force etc to carry and
transport guns, ammunition and other supplies to remote
areas of rough and varied terrain.
 By railways during construction of railway tracks on
mountain or on other rough terrain.
 By police force.
 In sport also like golf for traveling one place to other place.
 In Antarctic bases for research things where use of
conventional vehicle is impossible.
 Now a days UTVs are also used in adventuring like
mountaineering, in dirt and in snow.
Conclusion

The suspension system for rear and the front area will be
selected accordingly to complete the objectives.
The usage of double wishbones geometry as front
suspension system and H arm geometry as Rear suspension
system are close enough to fulfil the objectives stated,
thus analysis of these geometries will be done.
