2 Dimension
Definition 1 (Basis).
Let V be a vector space and B = {v1 , v2 , · · · , vn } be a
subset of V. B is said to be a basis for the vector space V
if following holds;
1 Span(B) = V
2 B is linearly independent.
Standard Basis
1 The standard basis for R3 is
{(1, 0, 0), (0, 1, 0), (0, 0, 1)}
2 The standard basis for Rn is {e1 , e2 , · · · , en }, for
ei = (0, 0, · · · , 1, 0, · · · , 0)

Examples
Theorem 2.1.
All set of basis vectors of a finite dimensional vector space
have the same number of vectors in them.
Definition 3 (Dimension).
The number of elements in a basis of a vector space V is
called dimension and denoted by dim(V).
Corollary 4.
Let S be a finite subset of a finite dimensional vector space V .
1 If S spans V but not a basis for V then there is a subset of S that is
a basis.
Corollary 4.
Let S be a finite subset of a finite dimensional vector space V .
1 If S spans V but not a basis for V then there is a subset of S that is
a basis.
2 If S is linearly independent but does not span V then there is a
superset S 0 that is a basis for V .
