Acknowledgement

The researcher would like to express gratitude to her English teacher Mrs. Blair-Saul for giving

her the golden opportunity to do this wonderful SBA on the topic “Consequences of Peer

Pressure among Students”. The researcher would also like to thank her parents and friends who

assisted in the successful completion of this SBA.

1
Plan of Investigation

The topic chosen for the researcher’s English Language School Based Assessment is “Peer

Pressure among Students”. The researcher plans to investigate the “Consequences of Peer

Pressure among Students”. My fascination with this topic came as a result of me realizing the

effect that someone’s opinion has on children in the 21st century.

As a student of English, the researcher expects to improve her writing techniques and reading

comprehension skills by researching and arranging the information garnered after research done.

The researcher furthers hopes that the research will assist in improving analytical skills, since it

will assist in separating validity from propaganda. The researcher intends to collect relevant

information by using an online article, a poster, and a video.

6 Negative Effects Of Peer-Pressure

5
BY PADMA ON AUGUST 5, 2014 PARENTS

One of the peskier aspects of teenage is peer-pressure.

Peer-pressure is a rite of passage that all of us go through but its impact varies from person to person.
In a nutshell, peer-pressure is the influence that friends, people and individuals are capable of
exerting on person. Some children are able to brush it off without any issues while it negatively
impacts some other children. Sometimes adults underestimate the effects of peer pressure on their
children because they were teenagers long ago in a different time.

Here are 6 ways in which peer-pressure can negatively affect children. They are listed in order of
increasing importance.

3
Teenager frustrated with academics

1. A dip in self-confidence – Just as some influences can be positive, some influences can be
negative too. Peer pressure can take a normally self-confident child and make him/her someone who
is not sure about themselves and has low self-esteem. Low self-esteem and a lack of confidence in
turn might impact a child’s general well-being.
2. Academics are affected – For teenagers, it is important they be accepted by their peer group. This
means that their peer group’s approval gets placed above that of their parents and teachers. This in
turn has a direct effect on their academics. Sometimes their academics are affected because despite
being capable of performing well, they choose not to because in the eyes of their peers it makes them
look ‘uncool’. Sometimes their academics are affected because in an effort to fit in with their peer
group, they place more emphasis on being social rather than working on their academics.

Teenagers being offered cigarettes and alcohol

3. Can easily adopt dangerous habits – The more extreme forms of peer pressure propagate bad
habits such as alcohol consumption, smoking, drug abuse. Technically, teenagers know that these are

4
not good habits to cultivate but they excuse it with the brash confidence youth and are also motivated
by the need to feel accepted. At this point of time, long term consequences don’t really occur to
them.
4. Makes them feel ashamed or bad about themselves and their family – At the average school,
the student body is composed of students who come from various economic backgrounds. Sometimes
these economic backgrounds are vastly disparate and for many children, this becomes a bone of
contention. If they come from poor economic backgrounds or come from a family which might not
give them money to spend extravagantly, children end up feeling bad or ashamed about themselves
and their family, because in the eyes of their peers, they are somehow ‘lesser’ or ‘weird’ individuals.
5. Distances them from family and friends – It is common for teenagers to think that nobody
understands them and that the whole world is against them. However, in a few cases, the influence of
peer pressure is such that it draws teenagers completely away from family and friends who mean
well. They shut themselves off and fall into bad company.

Lonely and depressed teenager

6. May engage in self harm and suicide ideation – Sometimes the impact of peer pressure on
teenagers is so bad that they can hardly stand to be in their own skin, are distanced from family and
friends and become depressed and anxious. In such instances, teenagers could attempt self-harm or
even dream of committing suicide, engage in suicidal thoughts and even ultimately engage in suicide.

5
Peer-pressure cannot be avoided and nor should children be wrapped in cotton wool and kept away
like precious figurines. Recognize that your children are growing up, and allow them a limited
amount of freedom and most important of all, always let them know that you love them.

Peer Pressure
The fear of being left out is what it’s all about
No one wants to get laughed at or be the odd one out
No one likes to feel rejected put down and dejected
we all love to feel accepted, we’re all affected
but you have to learn to be your own person
just be yourself and aim to be your best version
You’re not a robot programmed to follow without thinking
just acting brainless with empty eyes blinking
I understand the pressure it doesn’t stop as you grow
It’s natural to follow where everyone goes
and sometimes it’s ok to go with the flow
but other times you have to swim against the tide and so
you’ll have to say no, when everyone says yes
and be firm with your choice deep in your chest
and overcome that fear of being left out
because that’s what peer pressure is really all about

Reflection

The researcher was displeased by piece one, which shows how the negative effects of peer

pressure affects persons, especially teen agers, peer pressure can affect persons in many ways, it

can cause persons to commit suicide, feel unwanted, and even leave to depression. The

researcher was also unpleased by piece two which show the cases against peer pressure, as u

know being bully or asked to do something against your will it causes u to feel uncommon an

give you a sense of un-healing pride. The feeling of being ashamed or bad about themselves is

the most uncomfortable situation you can think of. Piece three which give the researcher a clear

understanding on how peer pressure affects persons physically, mentally and emotionally in

many cases.

The tone in piece one give the researcher a great cover of what peer pressure is, piece two

show the cases against peer pressure, piece three give the researcher a great understanding on

how peer pressure begins.

Oral Presentation Plan

Group Report

On Monday, October, 15, 2018, the members of the group chose the topic ‘Peer

Pressure’. Then the English Language teacher assigned the individual subtopic to be

investigated. Each group member then committed to do the necessary researcher on the topic.

After the first meeting the group member conducted research on their individual

subtopic. Majority of the information came from the internet. The members of the group sought

data in the form of internet articles, comic strip, and videos. These materials were used because

they were easily understandable.

While completing this English Language School Based Assessment the group

members began to realize that peer pressure occurs right around them and they realized how

dangerous it is. On September, 2, 2019 the group met to discuss their oral presentation and what

they should do and when they should do it. On September, 8, 2019 the group met and they

recorded their first draft for the oral presentation. On September, 9, 2019 the first draft was

submitted for the English teacher to critique. Then on September, 13, 2019 the second draft for

the oral presentation.

Additionally during the course of completing this School Based Assessment the

researchers developed their communication skills both oral and written.
