1
INTRODUCTION TO MEDIA

The system of communication which brings news and entertainment to the populace at large
through books, newspapers, radio, television, and the Internet is called the "Mass Media." The
Mass Media is playing an increasingly large role in our everyday lives. Media are the
communication outlets or tools used to store and deliver information or data. The term refers
to the components of mass media communication industry, such as print media, publishing,
the news media, photography, cinema, broadcasting (radio and television), and advertising.
The development of early writing and paper enabled longer-distance communication systems
such as mail, including in the Persian Empire (Chapar Khaneh and Angarium) and Roman
Empire, which can be interpreted as early forms of media. Writers such as Howard Rheingold
have framed early forms of human communication as early forms of media, such as the
Lascaux cave paintings and early writing. Another framing of the history of media starts with
the Chauvet Cave paintings and continues with other ways to carry human communication
beyond the short range. The term media in its modern application relating to communication
channels was first used by Canadian communications theorist Marshall McLuhan, who stated
in Counterblast (1954) “The media are not toys; they should not be in the hands of Mother
Goose and Peter Pan executives. They can be trusted only to new artists, because they are art
forms." By the mid-1960s, the term had spread to general use in North America and the
United Kingdom.

The phrase “mass media" according to H.L. Mencken, used as early as in 1923 in the United
States. The term “medium" (the singular form of "media") is defined as one of the means or
channels of general communication, information, or entertainment in society, as newspapers,
radio, or television.

2
MEDIA IS CLASSIFIED IN TWO TYPES:-
● PRINT MEDIA
● ELECTRONIC MEDIA

PRINT MEDIA
Simply stated, print media is the printed version of telling the news, primarily through
newspapers and magazines. Before the invention and widespread use of printing presses,
printed materials had to be written by hand. It was a painstaking process that made mass
distribution impossible. At first, news was chiseled in stone. Later, it was handwritten and
posted in a public area much like today's posters or read from a scroll by a town crier. As early
as 131 B.C., the ancient Roman government produced daily news sheets and informed the
public this way. Through the years, print media evolved to include entertainment, educational
topics and more, instead of only conveying news.

ELECTRONIC MEDIA
In the last century, a revolution in telecommunications has greatly altered communication by
providing new media for long distance communication. The first transatlantic two-way radio
broadcast occurred in 1906 and led to common communication via analog and digital media:
Analog telecommunications include some radio systems, historical telephony systems, and
historical television broadcasts. Digital telecommunications allow for computer-mediated
communication, telegraphy, and computer networks. Modern communication media now
allow for intense long-distance exchanges between larger numbers of people (many-to-many
communication via e-mail, Internet forums, and teleportation). On the other hand, many
traditional broadcast media and mass media favor one-to-many communication (television,
cinema, radio, newspaper, magazines, and also social media). Electronic media usage is
growing, although concern has arisen that it distracts youth from face-to-face contact with
friends and family. Research on the social engagement effect is mixed. One study by
Wellman found that "33% of Internet users said that the Internet had improved their
connections to friends 'a lot', and 23% said it had increased the quality of their

3
communication with family members by a similar amount. Young people in particular took
advantage of the social side of the Internet. Nearly half (49%) of the 18- to 29-year-olds said
that the Internet had improved their connections to friends a lot. On the other hand, 19% of
employed Internet users said that the Internet had increased the amount of time they spent
working in home". Electronic media now comes in the forms of tablets, laptops, desktops,
cell phones, mp3 players, DVDs, gaming systems, radios, and television. Technology has
spiked to record highs within the last decade, thus changing the dynamic of communication.
The spike in electronic media really started to grow in 2007 when the release of the first
iPhone came out. The meaning of electronic media, as it is known in various spheres, has
changed with the passage of time. The term media has achieved a broader meaning nowadays
as compared to that given it a decade ago. Earlier, there was multimedia, once only a piece of
software (application software) used to play audio (sound) and video (visual object with or
without sound). Following this, it was CD (Compact Disc) and DVD (Digital Versatile Disc),
then camera of 3G (third generation) applications in the field. In modern terms, the term
"media" includes all the software which are used in PC (computer) or laptop or mobile phone
installed for normal or better performance of the system; today, however, hard discs (used to
increase the installation capacity of data) of computer are an example of electronic media.
This type of hard disc is becoming increasingly smaller in size. Electronic media is the best
and easy medium for the communication. Mass media means technology that is intended to
reach a mass audience. It is the primary means of communication used to reach the vast
majority of the general public. The most common platforms for mass media are newspapers,
magazines, radio, television, and the Internet.

NEWS SOURCES
Journalism, a source is a person, publication, or other record or document that gives timely
information. Outside journalism, sources are sometimes known as "news sources". Examples
of sources include, but are not limited to official records, publications or broadcasts, officials
in government or business, organizations or corporations, witnesses of crime, accidents or
other events, and people involved with or affected by a news event or issue. According to
Shoemaker (1996) and Mc Quail (1994), there are a multitude of factors that tend to condition
the acceptance of sources as bona fide by investigative journalists. Reporters are expected to
develop and cultivate sources, especially if they regularly cover a specific topic, known as a
"beat". Beat reporters must, however, be cautious of becoming too close to their sources.
Reporters often, but not always, give greater leeway to sources with little experience. For
example, sometimes a person will say they don't want to talk, and then proceed to talk; if that
person is not a public figure, reporters are less likely to use that information. Journalists are
also encouraged to be skeptical without being cynical, as per the saying "If your mother says
she loves you, check it out." this was popularized by the City News Bureau of Chicago. As a
rule of thumb, but especially when reporting on controversy, reporters are expected to use
multiple sources.

also responsible for assigning reporters to stories or deciding what is covered and what isn't.

The following people work under this department:

A human-resources department (HR department) of an organization performs human resource

management, overseeing various aspects of employment, such as compliance with labor law

14
MY EXPERIENCE
My internship at IBC24 started on the 2nd of January and since then I had the
opportunity to learn all about the workings of a successful news channel
undertaking various new methods of making news helpful and interesting i.e.
The Viral show, or shows on Road safety and Women safety.

▪ I began my first day by exploring the newsroom, its various desks and their
responsibilities, also the journey of news until it’s aired.
▪ Worked on Velocity ESX v3.1.28 which is used by the organization as their
basic video editing software with many features that makes it easy to
understand and use. Using this we edit raw footage into shots and bites, make
packages, windows and can add VFX (Video Effects) or Transitions between
scenes.

▪ Some basic terms used in newsroom I learned:

i. Byte- Byte is a statement given by a person on a particular news or

topic. It has the channel’s identity. It is of 20-30 sec.
ii. Shot- It is a visual of news which shows you everything that is
relevant to the said news so to have a better understanding of it. It
could be of about 30-40 sec.
iii. VOXPOP- It is the statement of more than 2-3 people are on the same
news. It is of 10-15sec.
iv. WT- Walk Through is when reporter covers news from field and asks
the same or different questions from more than one person. It seem
similar as live but isn’t done live. It could mainly be of 2 minutes.
v. 1 to 1- Is like an interview where a reporter asks question and the
person responds to it.

15
▪ The social media room is where I learnt how news is uploaded in various social
media sites and things that are to be kept in mind before uploading it.
▪ In archives I saw how / where important shots and bytes or documents are stored
for future references or use.
▪ During my internship at IBC24 I was fortunate as well to go out in the field with
Rajesh Mishra Sir to cover the “सससससस सससससस” of Chhattisgarh police for
their excellent investigation done on the kidnapping case of a businessman Mr.
Praveen Somani and leaned a great deal about the workings of a reporter and
cameramen accompanying them in the event and saw how they captured the
ceremony with a P2 250 camera and witnessed Rajesh Mishra sir asking
questions for a byte of Mr. D.M Awasthi ( Director General of Police) pertinent
to the investigation. It was an experience of a great importance to me as I had an
opportunity to be around so many uniformed police officers receiving honor for
their brilliant work, and to hear the DGP of Chhattisgarh praise them and
DIG/SSP Mr. Arif H. Shaikh on the case and also motivate them for future.
▪ I understood the concept of Anchor Visual Byte (AVB), Anchor Visual (AV),
SPR (SPONSER NEWS), WT (WALK THROUGH), ONE TO ONE, AVBGFX
& AVGFX.

▪ In graphic room I learned the three sections of graphics department:

❖ Online department
❖ Offline department
❖ Promotion department

▪ I was part of a promo shoot scheduled by IBC24 for an upcoming show called
“SAFETY PIN”.

16
▪ Learned how the news is written on software called Octopus and how it is
collected from the “News Flow System” also known as “Pool”; to read and edit
in the software only to have the information that is important to the news.
▪ V-SAT room is where I learned how the raw news is ingested so that it can be
later edited in the news room.
▪ Learn how the upper and lower bands are made and edited on personalized
software called “Viz Ticker Client”.

▪ I learned how to type in Hindi and also wrote news articles.
