Good afternoon everyone! Good morning Ma’am!
Please lead the prayer. (praying)
Take your seat. Ms. Secretary, who are absent? (Everybody is taking their seats and the secretary is
naming absent)
B. Motivation
What was our lesson yesterday? About folk songs of the lowlands of Luzon ma’am.
Of course, the singing of the folk songs
which originated in the lowlands of Luzon. Well,
did you enjoy it? Yes Ma’am,
Very good! We even tackled that folk songs
are often sung together with their families and of
course with a musical instruments to accompany
their folk songs. Yes Ma’am!
Can anybody name instruments which are
used to accompany folk songs? Guitar, drums, flutes
Excellent! Did you know that these musical
instruments belong to a family or classification just
like us too? Really ma’am, how?
C. Presentation
Yes, like us, musical instruments also are
grouped according to how they produce a sound.
Now since we’ve mentioned about classifications,
what do you think is our topic for today? Classification of Musical Instruments
Exactly! There are many versions of how to
classify musical instruments. We already know that
there are stringed, percussion and wind instruments
but what we need to know is that there is other way
to classify them and that is what we will tackle
today. Are you ready? Yes Ma’am!
Very ready! Today we will tackle the
Hornbostel-Sachs Classification of Musical
Instruments.
D. Discussion
Hornbostel-Sachs Classification of Musical
Instruments is the most widely accepted system of
musical instruments classification used today. (Taking down notes)
It identifies five classifications of
instruments namely, Aerophones, Chordophones,
Idiophones, Membranophones and the newest,
Electrophones.
They are classified based on how
instrument creates vibrations in order to produce a

sound.
Aerophones produced sound primarily by Yes Ma’am!
causing a body of air to vibrate because of the air
blown inside. Can you give an example? Flute, Saxophone
Chordophones produced sound by the
vibration of its strings which are strummed,
plucked or bowed. Can you give an example? Guitar, Violin
Idiophones produced sound by a vibration of
its body as it is being struck, scraped, rubbed,
shaken, and plucked. Can you give an example? Xylophone, Cymbals
Membranophones produced sound by
vibrating membranes through tapping of hands or
sticks. Can you give an example? Drums
Electrophones produced sound which are
generated by electricity. Can you give an example? Electric Guitar.
