Hornbostel-Sachs

Classification of Musical
Instruments is the most widely
accepted system of musical
instruments classification used
today.
It identifies five
classifications of instruments
namely, Aerophones,
Chordophones, Idiophones,
Membranophones and the
newest, Electrophones.
They are classified based
on how instrument creates
vibrations in order to
produce a sound.
- Produced sound by
causing a body of air to
vibrate because of the air
blown inside.
- Produced sound by the
vibration of its strings
which are strummed,
plucked or bowed.
- Produced sound by a
vibration of its body as it
is being struck, scraped,
rubbed, shaken, and
plucked.
-Produced sound by
vibrating membranes
through tapping of hands
or sticks.
- Produced sound which
are generated by
electricity.
