1.Social Grade is the socio-economic classification used by the Market Research and Marketing Industries; most often in the analysis of
spending habits and consumer attitudes. Although it is not possible to allocate Social Grade precisely from information collected by the
2001 Census; the Market Research Society has developed a method for using Census information to provide a good approximation of
Social Grade. 2.In this table; people are classified by the Approximated Social Grade of their Household Reference Person.

Note: Occupational groups are classified in 2001 Census according to the Standard Occupational Classification 2000 (SOC2000) whereas
the 1991 Census was coded to an earlier version (SOC90). and the 1981 Census to a different version again (CODOT). While SOC2000
retains the same hierarchical structure of its predecessor with 9 major groups, only 73% of occupations remain within the same major group.
This means that comparisons between 1991 and 2001 Census data are not straightforward.
In major group 1 (Managers and Senior Officials) the tightening of the definition of managers reduces the size of this category significantly,
especially for females (1991 Census data coded to SOC2000 was 2 percentage points lower for males and 4 percentage points lower for
females compared to S0C90). Using the same comparisons of SOC2000 compared to SOC90 and 1991 Census data, major group 3
(Associate Professional and Technical Occupations) increases in size, more so for men than women. Major group 4 (Administrative and
Secretarial Occupations declines significantly for males and slightly for females. Major group 6 (Personal Service Occupations) declines
sharply for males by almost three quarters, and by about a quarter for females. The shift of waiters, waiteresses and bar staff to major group
9 (Elementary Occupations) has a marked effect upon the size of this major group, which rises from 8 per cent of male employment to over
12 per cent and from 9 per cent of female employment to over 16 per cent. All comparisons are for England and Wales. Source: Standard
Occupation Classification 2000 Volume 1 Structure and descriptions of unit groups.
