1. Preface

Understand the components of MDPS system.

Understand the control function and operation
Learning Goals condition.
Understand the troubleshooting method.

An optional steering system, MDPS (Motor Driven Power Steering) system for PB is basically same
as one for PA (i10); the supplier is still MANDO. However, the CAN interface has been added so that
the system reliability and performance have been enhanced comparing to the PA model.

For more detail information or specifications, please refer to the relevant workshop manual and
electrical troubleshooting manual.

Chapter 6. MDPS

- Improved fuel consumption (the fuel consumption can be enhanced by 2.6~3.7% comparing the
hydraulic steering system)
- Environmental-friendly concepts owing to the oil free for steering system and the overall parts are
reduced.

In PB, the manual steering is standard and column assist type MDPS is an option for general and
European market.

MDPS system for PB is MANDO system as same as one for PA. The torque sensor for PB is a non-contact
(Hall IC) type as same as PA (MC had a contact type potentiometer but it was also changed into non-
contact type torque sensor from June 2008).

A torque sensor consists of one rotor and two stators, but it is not allowed to disassemble this sensor from
column shaft. As same as in the case of existing systems, this sensor also outputs two signals referred to

as ‘Main’ and ‘Sub’ signal.

For the MDPS motor, maximum 65A of brush type DC motor was applied (same for gasoline and diesel)
and internal design is same as one for PA.

The sensor power is 5±0.5V. As same as in the case of existing systems, this sensor also outputs two

signals, ‘Main’ and ‘Sub’ signal with same phase each other (referred to as ‘voltage straight type’) when

the specific torque is applied on the torsion bar. When the steering wheel is in the neutral position; that is
no torque is detected the output voltage will be 50% of power supply voltage (2.5V).

In case of PA, the engine speed signal is sent to control module from PCM (or ECM) via independent serial
line, but PB has a CAN interface for those two signals as shown in the picture.

Following is the DTC detection condition and failsafe logic for engine speed signal.

C1272 (Engine speed signal failed)

This failure is detected if the engine speed is lower than 330rpm when the vehicle speed is higher than
50km/h for 20seconds.

Failsafe control:

Motor Off, Relay On, Warning lamp ON

It will be restored if the engine speed is higher than 525rpm or the system power supply is off.

There is also another serial line for the vehicle speed signal input from PCM (or ECM). Following is the
DTC detection condition and failsafe logic for vehicle speed signal.

C1212 (Vehicle speed signal failed)

This failure is detected if the vehicle speed is 0km/h when the engine speed is higher than 2,500rpm or
more for 20seconds.

If the engine is just started, following conditions must be satisfied for the DTC to be detected.

Vehicle speed = 0km/h, Engine speed > 4,000rpm for 5minutes

Technical Training Team 1 131

Chapter 6. MDPS

Failsafe control:

Motor is controlled as 255km/h, Relay ON, Warning lamp off

It will be restored if the vehicle speed is higher than 5km/h or the system power supply is off.

The vehicle speed signal is not a critical factor for the safety in this system, therefore the motor will not be
turned off even if the sensor signal is failed, and however the current will be decreased in order to make
the steering effort to be increased.

MDPS Warning Lamp

- IG ON, Engine Stop: Keeps ON

- Engine Starting: Turns off 2sec later after engine
starting in normal condition.

I/P junction box

Main power is supplied through MDPS fuse (80A, in multi fuse) in engine room junction box. IG ON signal
will input through the IGN 10A fuse in the passenger compartment junction box.

The ‘EPS’ warning lamp on the cluster is driven by MDPS control module via hard wiring to the cluster.

Following is the DTC detection condition regarding the power supply (high voltage, low voltage) and
failsafe control logic.

◆ Excessive battery power: Relay contact voltage > 17.5V for 48msec.
→ Motor Off, Relay ON, Warning lamp ON [C1101]
It will be restored if the voltage is lower than 15.5V.

◆ Low battery power: Relay contact voltage < 9V for 5sec.

→ Motor Off, Relay ON, Warning lamp ON [C1102]
It will be restored if the voltage is higher than 10V.

Brush type DC motor is applied. Brush type has several characteristics as follows.

- Simple control logic

- Brush operating noise may occur
- Limitation for high speed rotation and output power

Following is the DTC detection condition regarding the motor and the failsafe control logic.

◆ Motor voltage on both sides > Relay contact voltage – 0.5V or < 0.2V (When the motor is not operated
the motor voltage on both sides should be around 4V in normal condition)
→ Motor Off, Relay Off, Warning lamp ON [C2412]

◆ Measured current – Target current > 10A

→ Motor Off, Relay Off, Warning lamp ON [C2413]

◆ Motor current is higher than 75A

→ Motor Off, Relay Off, Warning lamp ON [C2414]

◆ Measure motor current < 2A when the target current is higher than 4A
→ Motor Off, Relay Off, Warning lamp ON [C2415]
Failsafe will be restored if the system power is off.

7. MDPS Control Module

Motor connector ◆ System Supplier: MANDO

◆ Thermister to detect the temperature is
embedded in control module.

Motor Control Module

MANDO control module is applied and assembled in the steering column. In case of MANDO system, the

motor current map sets with every 8km/h of vehicle speed. There is no steering angle sensor for ‘On

center feeling’ control, however ‘On center control’ is implemented by the logically calculated value from

the torque sensor in MANDO system. Following is the DTC related with the control module (including of

internal error) and it’s failsafe logic when it has a failure.

1) C1704 (Failsafe relay stuck)

This failure is detected if ‘failsafe contact voltage > 9V’ for 0.2seconds.
Failsafe: Motor Off, Relay Off, Warning lamp ON
It will be restored if the system power is off.
2) C1604 (MDPS control module internal failure)
This trouble code will be detected when the following conditions are satisfied.

a) Internal ‘step-up’ power supply output voltage – Relay contact voltage < 3V for 2seconds or
more.
Failsafe control: Motor Off, Relay ON, Warning lamp ON
b) The voltage at the motor monitoring interface terminal > 23V or < -3V
Failsafe control: Motor Off, Relay Off, Warning lamp ON
c) Torque sensor interface failure: The difference of torque sensor input & output > 2.5Nm
Failsafe control: Motor Off, Relay Off, Warning lamp ON
d) Thermistor failure: Detected temperature < -45°C or > 120°C

Technical Training Team 1 135

Chapter 6. MDPS

Failsafe control: Motor is controlled as 60°C, Relay ON, Warning lamp Off
e) ROM or RAM failure: No DTC
Failsafe control: Motor Off, Relay Off, Warning lamp ON

8. Communication

cardiagn.com
All of DTC in PB MDPS system can be erased when it meets the following conditions.

- 60 cycles of On/Off in normal condition or

- By the request from the diagnosis scanner
Variant coding for general & Europe:

Some of MDPS system has an option in the scanner for the variant coding for different areas and engine
specification as shown in the above picture. However, PB will not have that feature in the scanner,
instead of that; the part number of control module differs in order to identify the area (General/Europe):
Same as PA.

Overheat protection:

Whenever the engine starts, the control module checks the temperature using the thermister embedded in
control module and decides the motor current in order to protect the system.

You can check this symptom by steering fully for a particular time and confirm the motor current value in
the current data of scanner.
