Water conservation

Advantages and Disadvantages of Some Water Conserving Techniques

Dams

Advantages:

Dams are useful for many things including providing cheap electricity and water. Dams are made to
last a very long time, by building them they create many jobs for many people. Dams can also can
create homes and a habitat for surrounding native animals, by creating a local water source for them
and for some giving them a home. Dams also protect animals by rubbish control/debris control.
Dams can also store a lot of water for future use, this water can then be used for emergencies such
as fires. Dams also can prevent flooding by taking the water instead of it going into the ground.
Building dams also provide irrigation control, this then makes farmer’s jobs easier and provide more
water for their animals.

1. Dams can prevent flooding in the area.

2. They are made to last a very long time.

3. Dams provide cheap electricity for millions of people.

They give water to farmer and their animals easier.

5. Dams provide irrigation control.

6. They also provide rubbish control (debris control).

7. Dams can store lots of water for future use.

8. They can be used for emergencies such as fires.

9. Building dams provides jobs for people.

10. Dams can create wild animal’s homes.

Disadvantages:

Although there are many advantages to dams there are also some disadvantages. Dams are
expansive to build and maintain, so they have to work for many years in the future to pay off their
debt. Dams also can damage their surroundings. This can happen by building dams near homes,
some houses will have to be demolished, to make room for the dam. Dams can also flood over
causing some local homeowners get damaged. Some dams can also create earthquakes due to very
deep digging. Building dams may also destroy local animal’s habitat.

1. Dams are expensive to build and maintain, so they have to keep working for a very long time in
the future to pay off that debt.

2. They can be dangerous to build.

3. Dams have to run off a river and by building a dam by the river it then destroys the
surroundings.

4. Some building of big dams create earth quakes, due to digging.

5. Having a dam near housing can cause floods leaving people having to give up their homes.

Water Tanks

Advantages:

There are many advantages with having a water tank/s installed in your garden. Having a water tank
is very good for the environment, for you and for your family. Water tanks are great for saving
money. You save money as you are using your water and not the Government’s, this way you are not
having to as expensive water bills. Water tanks also can help your family with water restrictions,
when you are using your own water you don’t have to worry about water restrictions as much. Tank
water is also better for your garden compared to greywater. It is thought as greywater may carry left
over chemicals (such as chlorine), which may not be the best for your garden, so you may what to
think about saving up some rainwater for your garden. These chemicals that are in the water can
also effect the taste of the water, so if you don’t like the taste your water, you should think about
trying rainwater. Having a water tank can also help others near and far. During bushfires water is
needed, so water helicopters look for water to put out bushfires and one of their sources are
people’s water tank. Having a water tank can also help you with your personal emergencies such as
house fires or just if your water gets stopped.

1. If you have water restrictions within your area, you wouldn’t have to worry so much about
them.

2. When you have a water tank your water bill won’t be as big as you are using your own water.

3. During bushfires the fighter helicopters take water from people’s water tanks to stop the fire
and save hundreds of people’s lives.

4. Tank water is better for your garden and more preferred to then recycled water.

5. Tanks can be fitted into everyone’s home, as they have many different shapes and sizes.

6. Having a water tank is a very good idea for backup plan in case something happens to your
main water supply.

7. As rainwater doesn’t have any chemicals in rainwater tastes a lot better than normal water.

Disadvantages:

Rainfall can happen anytime, so sometimes you may not get enough rainwater for you and your
family, so sometimes you have to pay for your water tank to be refilled which can be expensive.
Your water tank can also overflow if the rainfall is too heavy. Water tanks can get very dirty and can
be very hard to clean. The water in the tank have a very high chance of getting dirty and can be
dangerous to drink without prop

er cleaning and some cleaning systems can cost a lot of money.

1. Rainfall is unpredictable.
2. Water tanks can be very hard clean.

3. You may have to refill your water tank, so it may cost you money.

4. Some cleaning systems cost a lot of money.

5. You can’t collect as much water as you like, as it over flows.

6. Water tanks have a high chance of getting dirty.

7. If you rely mainly on tank water during the summer, you may need to get it refilled.
