4. (25b + 240) pesos 5. p³ - 15p² + 71p – 105 6. -3x² - 2x + 1

7. Area of the wall = (4x + 3)(7x – 2) ft.² = (28x² + 13x – 6) ft.²

Cost per square foot = (x + 3) pesos
Total cost = [(28x² + 13x – 6) (x + 3)] pesos = (28x³ + 97x² + 33x – 18) pesos

8. Dividend : 2 y 4 - 3y² + y – 7
Subtract the remainder from the dividend.
2 y 4 - 3y² + y – 7 – 11 = 2 y 4 - 3y² + y – 18 (a)
To get the divisor, divide (a) by the quotient.
(2 y 4 - 3y² + y – 18) ÷ (2y³ - 4y² + 5y – 9) = y + 2

9. a. P = 4x + (12x- 7) + (14x + 5) + 4x + (10x – 1) = (44x – 3) units

b. C = 2πr = 2π(7x – 9) units or (14πx – 18 π) units

10. a. Area shadedregion = Area square - Area rectangle

Area square = (2x + 7)² = (4x² + 28x + 49) square units
Area rectangle = (4X -9) (X – 3) = (4X² - 21X + 27) square units
Area shaded region = (4x² + 28x = 49) – (4x² - 21x + 27) = (49x + 22) square units

b. Area shadedregion = Area rectangle - 2(Area triangle)

Area rectangle = (4x – 12) (2x – 6) = (8x² - 48x + 72) square units
1
2(Area triangle) = 2( )( 2x – 6)(2x – 6) = (4x² - 24x + 36) square units
2
Area shadedregion = (8x² - 48x + 72) – (4x² - 24x + 36) = (4x²- 24x + 36) square units
ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION: notice that the shaded region is just half the area of the

1 1
whole rectangle. Hence, Area shadedregion = (Area rectangle) = (8x² - 48x + 72)
2 2
= (4x² - 24x + 36) square units

CHALLENGE!!!
1. Let x be the number and x² be the square of the number. That is, x² = 2630. Then, the product
will be (x – 20) (x + 20) = x² - 400. Comparing with x² = 2630, this implies that the product is 400
less than x². therefore, x² - 400 = 2360 – 400 = 2230.
2. Let a = 2719882015. Then, we have a²- [(a + 1) (a – 1)]. Simplifying it further, we have a² - (a² -
1) or a² - a² + 1 = 1.
2 a+2 b−ab 2 ( 4 ) +2 ( 2 )−(4)( 2) 8+ 4−8 4
3. From a ¿ b = ,4¿2= −4 ( 4 ) (2) ¿ = = =2
b+8 a−4 ab 2+8 ( 4 ¿ 2+ 32−32 2
We can now determine (4 ¿ 2) ¿ 6 with 4 ¿ 2 = 2
2 ( 2 ) +2 ( 6 ) −(2)(6) 4 +12−12 4 −2
(4 ¿ 2) ¿ 6 = 2 ¿ 6 = = = =
6+8 ( 2 ) −4 (2)( 6) 6+16−48 −26 13

4. Representing the first statement, we have p + = 25. Squaring both sides, we have (p + )² =
p p
1 1 1
(25)². That is, p² + 2 + = 625. Then p² + = 625 – 2. Therefore, p² + = 623.
p² p² p²
5. Representing each, we have x – y = 7, xy = 55 and x³ - y³ = 343. Recall that x³ - y³ = (x – y)
(x² + xy + y²). Substituting the values, we have 343 = 7(x² + xy + y²) which can be simplified
to 49 = x² + xy + y² (a). We need to find the value of x² + 8xy + y² so we must add 7xy to (a).
note that xy = 55 then 7xy = 7(55) = 385. Therefore,
x² + 8xy + y² = (x² + xy + y²) + 7xy = 49 + 385 = 434
6. Let x and y be the two numbers. We have x + y = 12 (1) and xy = 15 (2). Recall that x³ + y³ = (x
+ y) (x² - xy + y²). Squaring (1), we have (x + y)² = (12)². That is, x² + 2xy + y² = 144 (3). We need
to determine the value of x² - xy + y² from (3). So, we add -3xy to (3). That is,
x² + 2xy + y² = 144
- 3xy = -3(15) = -45
x² - xy + y² = 99
Therefore, x³ + y³ = (x + y) (x² - xy + y²) = (12)(99) = 1188
