Section : Calibration Control 3/1 Approval : Date:1st June 2000

Subject : Calibration, control and Recall Revision No : 3 PTSCOS/06-2000

SUBJECT: CALIBRATION CONTROL AND RECALL.

1.0 PURPOSE

1.1 To specify the responsibilities for controlling the accuracy of measuring and test
equipment and measurement standards.

2.0 APPLICATION

2.1 Applies only to the measuring and test equipment shown in Table 4.1.

2.2 This procedure applies to the initial calibration of newly acquired measuring and
test equipment prior to being placed into active service and to the periodic
recalibration at the specified intervals.

3.0 DEFINITIONS

3.1 Calibration Control : A documented system for assuring that necessary

measuring and test equipment devices and measurement standards are
calibrated, and that this is performed at intervals that assure their accuracy.

3.2 Calibration Recall :A system for indicating in advance for each measuring and
test equipment device and / or standard, the date when it is next due for
calibration.

3.3 Calibration Lab :A facility providing calibration services approved by Field

Inspection Engineering.

4.0 PROCEDURE

4.1 All applicable measuring and test equipment instruments and devices are to be
calibrated by a calibration lab. This calibration is to occur at regularly schedules
intervals as determined by Field Inspection Engineering, on the basic of stability,
purpose, and usage, or sooner if there is some reason to believe that the
instrument or device needs recalibration (refer to Table 4.1).

4.2 All measuring and test equipment devices will be calibrated to working
measurement standards or transfer measurement standards, there is turn
calibrated to reference measurement standards which are calibrated and
certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

4.3 The calibration status of each item shall be identified by means of a lable or
colour code applied to each item. The label or colour code shall at least indicate
the next date due for calibration. If the item is too small or otherwise unsuitable
for this type of marking, the label may be applied to the storage container for the
item.

Subject : Calibration, control and Recall Revision No : 3 PTSCOS/06-2000

4.4 All field inspectors are responsible for monitoring calibration due dates of their
equipment and submitting their equipment for calibration on schedule.

4.5 All field inspectors have the responsibility for seeing that an item of equipment is
not used when it’s calibration period has expired. Such items must be returned to
inspection service centre.

4.6 Inspection services is responsible for the purchasing , stocking and issuing of
measuring and test equipment devices to field inspectors. It is the responsibility
of inspection sevices to co-ordinate the calibration and recall activities of all
measuring and test equipment.

4.7 Prior to issuing new measuring or test equipment devices for use. Inspection
services shall arrange to have the instruments identified and calibrated by a
calibration lab.

4.8 Each item shall be identified by a unique serial number, if appropriate. In other
cases , calibration control and recall will be maintained by use of a colour code.

4.9 An individual calibration record for each serialized intrument will be aintained on
file by an inspection engineer.

4.10 Field inspection engineering shall maintain a calibration recall system for each
serialized item of measuring and test equipment. The system shall indicate in
advance the date each item is due for calibration.

4.11 A written notice shall be provided to Inspection services at the first of each
month showing which instruments are due for calibration at the end of each
month.

4.12 Inspection Services shall send replacement items to each area for which
instruments are due for calibration. Instructions shall also be sent for the area to
send in the items due for calibration.

4.13 When the items requiring calibration are received from the field areas, Inspection
services shall arrange to have them calibrated as outlined in the procedure.

4.14 All calibrated items shall be returned to inspection services.

4.15 Inspection services shall develop and maintain a record for each instrument by
description and serial number showing the location to which the instrument has
been issued.
