Language and Gender

Topic/Lesson

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

a. The concept of separation to boys and girls at differentiating their gender.
b. The concept of learning asymmetry on how the preference of boys on toys or games
are stricter than girls.
c. The concept of the belief in adults as a preference to determining gender.

2. Insights (What new insights or learnings did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that in Learning

Asymmetry, I thought that in most countries the preference of toys or activities
were lay low to gender basis of boys and girls, but it is not. However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that in western countries,
choosing toys were hardly focused on boys which in some cases they were
punished or considered as a not 'boy' when they chose the dolls, and on girls were
considered as just a strong or brave person when they like to play cars, robots and
other toys that specified for boys. In play styles, a father wants their son to only
chose a game for a manly that has strength to put on while they let girls to choose
whatever they like although sometimes they will teaches them that dolls are toys
for girls and other games.
ii. If the gender of boy and girl were to disseminate into dichotomous beginnings,
some insights were already noticed as I grow and observe depending to the
actions of my parents and other people. I knew about the pink and blue color as a
"pink" for girls and "blue" for boys and some ways different colors were split
regarding to light and dark colors as gender basis for baby girls and boys which in
addition clothes were also one of the many reasons to determine if one is a boy or
a girl. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that voice
was something natural for a growing boys and girls, deep voice for boys and high
pitch for girls. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now
think/realize that, as it indicates to the Language and Gender it is by chance a way
of adults talk to them that they obtained and learned that girls should talked in
high pitched voice and boys should talked in deep voice. I learned that in a
psychological way baby girls and boys learned to know their gender by some
separate and specific adults teach them or acted them to be. They learned to know
what kind of toys, dresses, actions and games they should choose and play. It also
stated that when talking to girls’ adults were more delicate and modest rather than
talking to boys.
iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that when it comes
to Separation, I thought that adults would be more stricter on their children and
would only want their children if it is a girl or boy to only play with same sex.
However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that
children choses their playmates to be a girl with them or boy, they have the
decision and knowledge that the child they should accommodate and
communicate are the same sex. Although in some cases adults mixed their child
or in learning preferences to communicate with other genders in other for them to
comprehend what it is to be a boy and girl which it indicate that girls and boys
have different culture that makes them unique from each other.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you want more
explanations about?
i. If the behaviour of boys and girls differ from each other as how differently stated
their culture, then what should be the actions that should portray to understand
equality on both sides?
ii. How can psychological aspects affect the child to understand their gender without
or with the guidance of parents?
iii. Where does the beliefs of adults comes from in color and clothing style if in some
contries on their ancient times, the clothing were almost the same with each
other?
