were killed in a mobile home
fire in north-central Ohio.
Bucyrus police captain Joe

per that the fire appears to have
started in the living room. The
cause is being investigated.
The identities and ages
of the children haven’t been

Cleveland zoo
to go smoke
free on Jan. 1
CLEVELAND (AP) —
Cleveland’s zoo plans to snuff
out smoking in the new year.
A new policy taking effect
Jan. 1 will prohibit visitors
from lighting up inside the
Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
Smoking will be allowed in
the parking lots.

staff and volunteers will be
trained on how to politely
remind people that the zoo is
smoke free.
The Cincinnati, Toledo
and Akron zoos already have
smoking bans. The website

Cleveland’s zoo has 20
full-time workers who are
smokers. They’ll be permit-
ted to smoke on breaks and

House robbed
while woman
gave birth
COLUMBUS (AP) — An
Ohio war veteran and his fian-
cee say thieves broke into their
home and stole Christmas
presents and other items while
they were at a hospital for
their baby’s birth.
A relative called Tom
Sheehan and Tonya Verduga
after finding their house in a
shambles, WBNS-TV report-
ed. The couple’s son was born
Tuesday night.

had bought for Verduga’s two
sons from a previous marriage
were all stolen, Sheehan said.
Sheehan, who returned in
August from his third tour of
duty in Iraq, told WBNS he
and Verduga had bought their

“They left the wrapping
paper, just nothing to wrap,”
Sheehan said. “That’s just a
terrible thing to do.”

he just wants to get the house

Ohio set to widen
I-71 segment north
of Columbus
COLUMBUS (AP) — The
state plans to start work on wid-
ening a section of Interstate 71
that can slow the drive between
Cleveland and Columbus.
The highway in each direc-
tion narrows from three lanes
to two for 27 miles in coun-
ties north of Columbus. The
addition of extra lanes has
been approved by an Ohio
Department of Transportation
panel that sets priorities for
road projects.
The work will be done in
three stages, with construction
expected to begin next sum-
mer. The Columbus Dispatch
reports the first phase got a
green light Thursday and is
estimated to cost $46.9 mil-
lion, to be paid for through gas
taxes and federal grants.

Elder residents got in the Christmas spirit Friday at the senior center. Santa was on hand to greet those who
attended, including Executive Director Joyce Hale, who received a big hug from the big guy.

served 30 new beneficiaries
in September and October.
The thrift shop must also limit
food pantry visits and rent and
utility assistance. Strayer wor-
ries for those reaching limits
from all sides.
“People are getting to a
point where they’ve used up
all of their resources from
the different agencies and
now they face losing their
unemployment,” she said.
“Some are even losing their
food stamps. The government
took $2.2 billion from the
food stamp program, which is
about $59 per family that’s on
it already. They’re losing all
of their help and a lot of these
people are going to end up on
the street.”

press secretary, Allison
Preiss, said the federal stimu-
lus package included a tempo-
rary funding increase for food
stamps. She said the tempo-
rary funding was to expire
in 2018 and the $2.2 billion
came from rolling back the
expiration year to 2013. The
money pays for about half
of the $4.5 billion Healthy,
Hunger-free Kids Act that
updated the nation’s school
lunch program.

to do? Your tires are bald,
it’s icy outside • is it safe to
drive? Your car breaks down
in a desolate area – do you
have the proper items in your
vehicle to survive? Being pre-
pared for winter weather also
pertains to your vehicle and
knowing how to drive in blus-
tery weather.
“If you must be out dur-
ing a severe winter storm,
knowing how to operate a
vehicle can help you arrive
at your location safely,” said

County Safe Communities
Coalition. “Make sure your
vehicle is in proper work-
ing order before heading out
and have a safety kit in the
vehicle in the event of an
emergency.”
Make sure you get a car
winter tune-up now, prior
to severe winter weather.
Tune-ups should include:
• Tire check - consider
snow- or all-season tires if
tread is worn
• Battery test – you don’t

Some tips to keep in mind
while traveling in winter:
• Check weather reports

ally handle better than rear-
wheel drive.
• If the vehicle is equipped
with an Anti-lock Braking
System (ABS), be sure to
STOMP (firmly depress
brake pedal), STAY (on the
brakes – don’t pump brakes)
and STEER (where you want
the vehicle to go).
With ABS, it’s normal to
hear noise and feel the brake
pedal vibrate while applying
continual pressure.
Clear all windows (inside
and out), head-, tail-, brake-
and backup lights and turn
signals.

HOPEDALE (AP) — The
superintendent of an Ohio
school district facing a $225,000
deficit says students behind on
their lunch bills are being served
cheese-sandwiches until they’re
paid up.
Harrison Hills City schools
Superintendent George Ash
said the eastern Ohio district
has “basically been giving away
lunches to students without any
repercussions, and even some
adults.”
He didn’t know how much
was owed districtwide, or how
many students are affected, but
said the high school started out
$9,000 in arrears and that a teacher
there recently had a tab of $88.
Bread and cheese, a fruit cup
and milk are served to staff and
students who owe more than
$10. There is no charge for the
lunches, which replace lunches
that include two entree offerings
each day, such as pasta or a hot
sandwich. Elementary students
pay $2 for a standard lunch.
Students at the high school get
larger portions and pay $2.25.
“We’re still gonna feed the
kids, it’s just a problem that
needs to be addressed,” Ash
said. “Once it gets corrected,
you won’t hear another thing
about it.”
The policy does not affect
low-income students, who make
up 60 percent of the district’s
population of about 1,800.

Charles Follen, a political refugee
from Germany, has been given credit
for setting up the first decorated tree
in Boston in 1832. He was a teacher
at Harvard and his wife recorded the
event in her journal. She wrote that
there was not a tree branch that did
not have something hanging on it.
Years ago, not everyone had a
Christmas tree in their home. Some
families felt it was a luxury they just
couldn’t afford.
The following story was told to me
by one of my “old” neighbor kids. We
lived just north of Delphos, over in
Jennings Township. She tells the story
of her most memorable Christmas and
their first Christmas tree.
“It was mid-afternoon the day
before Christmas. Snow had been
falling gently but steadily all day. I
was sweeping it from the back porch
when I heard ‘Merry Christmas!’

BEREA — The weather
forecast for Sunday in Buffalo
calls for rain turning to freezing
rain turning to snow with winds
gusting to 30 mph.
Ideal, comfortable condi-
tions for penguins and polar
bears. And, it seems, the
Cleveland Brrr-owns.
When the outside temper-
ature plunges, these Browns
only heat up. Cleveland ended
last season by winning its
final four games, which were
all played in frigid, frostbiting
conditions. Unless things warm
up dramatically over the next
few weeks, the Browns, who
visit Buffalo and Cincinnati
before hosting Baltimore and
Pittsburgh, are gearing up for a
frozen finish.
Coach Eric Mangini isn’t
complaining.
“I really do love this weath-
er,” he said. “It’s great foot-
ball weather and I think if you
know how to play in it and it
doesn’t become a factor and it
doesn’t affect any part of our
game, then it becomes a real
advantage, but you have to get
used to it.”
The Browns (5-7) had the
snow shoveled off their prac-
tice fields and have spent the
week preparing outdoors, hop-
ing to simulate what they’ll
face this week when they visit
the Bills (2-10), who like their
Lake Erie counterparts know a
thing or two about playing in
inclement weather.
For most of the Browns, the
cold is nothing new. Not for all
of them, though.
“Man, it was cold in Oregon
but nothing like this,” rookie
safety T.J. Ward said as he
sifted through his locker look-
ing for some extra clothing to
layer on.
Like the Green Bay Packers,
who have historically used
Lambeau Field’s frozen tundra
and subzero conditions to create
one of the NFL’s best and most
unique home-field advantages,
the Browns relish the chance to
host teams who play in domes
or rarely travel East.
“Our team is built for it,” said
Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas.
“We have a power running
team, a big running back, big
physical offensive line. This is
the type of weather you would
think we would thrive in.”
In the nasty weather, the
game changes. The footing isn’t
as steady. The football is slick,
tougher to grasp and can take
crazy bounces. It’s also prone
to swirling winds that can turn
routine extra-point attempts
into adventures. If you’re not
prepared, Mother Nature will
dominate.
Coaches spend countless
hours during the week draw-
ing up detailed game plans
and planning for every pos-
sibility. There isn’t much they
can do when the wind comes
whipping through the stadium.
Mangini, who has won five
straight games in December,
said wind may be the toughest
external element to handle.
The cold, on the other hand,
may be the most overrated
aspect of playing in the, err,
cold.
Kicker Phil Dawson grew
up in Texas but his blood has
been thickened by 11-plus sea-
sons in Cleveland.
Dawson has developed into
one of the game’s best bad-
weather kickers. Three years
ago, when the Browns beat
the Bills 8-0 in blizzard-like
conditions, Dawson made two
field goals, including one that
he aimed at the sideline pylon
to account for 50-mph wind
gusts.
He and his teammates have
been through enough bone-
chilling games to know what
awaits them.
There’s something else
to consider when playing in
December’s cold — what to
wear.
The key is to dress in layers
but not to bundle up so much
that it inhibits mobility. One
group, though, will maintain its
macho approach to the severe
icy air.

Smart thrilled with guilty verdict

SALT LAKE CITY —
Elizabeth Smart waited more
than eight years for the word
she heard Friday.
“Guilty,” the court clerk
said, after a federal jury delib-
erated five hours to convict
street preacher Brian David
Mitchell of snatching Smart
from her bed, at knifepoint in
the dead of night, and forcing
sex on her while he held her
captive for nine months.
Smart smiled as the verdict
was read, while a bedraggled,
bearded Mitchell sat at the
defense table, singing hymns
with his hands before his
chest, as if in prayer.
“I hope that not only is
this an example that justice
can be served in America, but
that it is possible to move on
after something terrible has
happened,” Smart said, after
she walked arm-in-arm with
her mother through a crush
of media.
It was a dramatic end to a
tale that captured the nation’s
attention since she disappeared
in June 2002: A 14-year-old
girl mysteriously taken from
her home, the intense search
and her eventual discovery
walking Salt Lake City’s
streets with her captors.

Smart, now 23, flew back
from her Mormon mission in
Paris to take the stand, and
recount her “nine months of
hell.”
“The beginning and the
end of this story is attributable
to a woman with extraordi-
nary courage and extraordi-
nary determination, and that’s
Elizabeth Smart,” federal
prosecutor Carlie Christensen
said outside the courthouse.
“She did it with candor
and clarity and a truthfulness
that I think moved all of us,”
she said.
Smart described in excru-
ciating detail how she woke
up one night to the feel of a
cold, jagged knife at her throat
and being whisked away by
Mitchell to his camp in the
foothills near the family’s Salt
Lake City home.
Within hours of the kid-
napping, she testified, she
was forced into a polygamous
marriage with him. She was
tethered to a metal cable and
subjected to near-daily rapes
while being forced to use
alcohol and drugs.
The five-week trial turned
on the question of Mitchell’s
mental health.

His lawyers did not dispute
that he kidnapped Smart but
wanted him to be found not
guilty by reason of insanity.
Such a verdict would have
sent him to a prison mental
hospital.
Prosecutors countered that
Mitchell was faking mental
illness to avoid a conviction,
labeling him a “predatory cha-
meleon.”
Smart testified she believed
Mitchell was driven by his
desire for sex, drugs and alco-
hol, not by any sincere reli-
gious beliefs.
Jurors did not buy the
insanity defense, finding him
guilty of kidnapping and
unlawful transportation of a
minor across state lines for
the purposes of illegal sex.
The sex charge was based on
Mitchell taking her for five of
the nine months to California.
As the verdicts were read,
the shackled Mitchell sat sing-
ing about Jesus Christ on the
cross. Smart then turned to
her mother and both smiled.
