RELEVANCE (Why are you doing it?)

The reason we are building a Rube Goldberg machine is because we need more views and subscribers on our Youtube Channel. The Rube
Goldberg machine is a very popular machine on the internet that attracts people with its satisfactory and complicated functions. People with skills
and creative thinking can make incredible machines that generate millions of views. By building this machine, we will be able to gain more views
and subscribers on our channel.

(paragraph starter: “The reason we are building a Rube Goldberg machine is _______ .”)

PRODUCT FEATURES (based on research and existing product analysis describe the machine you will create)

Our machine will end up being 5 meters. Our machine will have about 4-5 parts. Each part will have its own interesting and special part and a
transition towards to next section.

(example: “Our machine will end up being 5-6 meters long.”)

(paragraph starter: “The resources used to make our machine include”)

TIMESCALE (How long will each phase take?)

We’ll have 4 phases. Each phase will take 40 seconds each.

TARGET USER (Who will watch your video?)

The viewers/target we are specially aiming for are people who are interested in the Rube Goldberg machine. This includes people who like
watching it, like to build it, and even professionals. We want our video not only to show the machine but the progress of making it. We want to
show our mistakes and how we can improve on it so other people, especially students working on a machine like we are, can learn and use it for
their machine.

OUTCOME (What will you create and what problem will have been solved?)

Our goal of the machine is to throw a crumpled paper ball into the trash bin by using our gold ruberg machine. We think that tasks like this
become annoying in our daily lives when we get very lazy so we wanted our machine to help solve this problem. We feel like these kinds

of common lazy things can attract many people since they help take away the tasks that bugs us daily.

IDU INQUIRY (In IS you discussed systems/machines. Is your machine and open or closed system? How would you compare this type of
machine to one of the machines developed during the industrial revolution?)

Our Rube Goldberg machine will be an open system because at the end, the results would be a piece of crumpled paper put into the trash can.

SELF-ASSESSMENT
The first section took longer than I expected since I had problems finding the proper materials and I had to
make a lot of changes to the first section. The second section was delayed for a while since we had to
finish the first one first and we also had to get cups and slime. The first section was supposed to just start
off the machine with dominoes and balls, but I didn’t realize how hard setting up dominoes could be and
how long it would take. We couldn’t find ping-pong balls so it took us a few days to find something to
replace it since golf balls were too heavy and the dominoes couldn’t knock it over. When we finally got our
first section to work about 2 times, we moved onto the second section. Our second section involves the
ball from section one to hit the cup that contains slime, for it to pour over to another cup that is hanging
from a string that is attached to a cloth with a ball on it. Our first problem was the ball couldn’t knock over
the cup. The video that inspired us with this idea had the whole cup upside down with some kind of
toy/material that we don’t have and can’t get. We skipped that problem to try to get the slime to pour over
first, but because all we could do with the cups were hang them on strings, they wouldn’t align with each
other. Our third problem was that the slime wasn’t heavy enough. Up until today, we have mixed 3 colours
of slime together but it isn’t to pull the cloth down. Our fourth problem was that the ball on the cloth, even
when the cloth moved a little, it would just move and sit between the gap of the two tables. Our intended
plan was for the ball to drop and hit the next line of dominoes to activate the next section. We still have a
lot of problems with the second section. To align the two cup, we taped about 5 markers together and then
to the table. I helped a little but then we just moved from the first problem and got stuck at the second
problem. While waiting for the slime to drop, we tested out some parts of section three. We stacked up two
books and two binders to create a slanted surface. We put a trash can below the table, in front of the
books. We put a crumpled ball of paper and a phone on the binder and tested the vibration of the phone
by calling. First we had a little trouble with the vibration not being strong enough, but then we figured it
out and finally got the ball to drop into the trash can. Then we tried to figure out how to use the
touchscreen pen to drop onto the call button on the phone.

Ping-pong balls to golf balls, a We couldn’t find ping-pong balls so we used a golf ball at the start for a nice push of force
balloon, and plastic balls and then we replaced another ball with a balloon just because that was all we could find and
it makes an interesting choice of material. We went to the material room and got some plastic
‘baseballs’ to use in section 1 and section 3.

Dominoes to another golf ball When we were planning, we forgot one important detail about the connection between part 1
and part 2 which was the weight of the slime. The weight of the slime must be small enough
for something like dominoes and golf balls with a small push-force to be able to knock down,
but must also be heavy enough to pull down the cloth that must also pull over the foam
volleyball on top of the cloth.
Side holes to hole in the middle of the At first, we made holes on the side of the bowls but then when we tried out section two, when
bowl the bowl was knocked over, the strongs on each side are not equal which angled the bowl in
a weird way which made the slime not drop on the directed target. We then tried making a
hole in the middle of the bowl and tied a knot on the string and put duct tape over it since the
slime will stick to the string if we don’t.

Books to binders In our third section, the vibration of the phone was supposed to be able to knock the paper
ball into the trash can. However, when we tried it, it wasn’t enough. So, to help give the ball
an angle, we went to get two binders to give it a slanted surface so the paper ball can just
slide and fall into the trash can with the vibration.

Plastic Ball to Tennis ball in Section 2 Because we needed more weight to push the cup of slime over, we had to change the ball to
Transition a tennis ball and then build a track using cardboard and markers to increase its speed and
strength.

Soft Volleyball to Tennis Ball In section three, we also had to decrease the weight that the slime needed to pull down, so
we replaced the soft volleyball with another tennis ball. And to increase the success rate, we
made a slide with rulers and cardboard leading the tennis ball directly to hit its target.

Delete the phone calling part We were in a rush and we had to find a solution. We weren’t able to figure out how to activate
the call yet so we took that part out, moved the binders and trash can in front of the tennis
ball on the table above. We made a slide for the tennis ball to hit the paper ball into the trash
can, shortening section 3 and changing the transition between section 2 and 3.

For this strand you will annotate your drawing or a photograph of the machine and explain the weaknesses that could be improved.

ANNOTATED DRAWING/PHOTOGRAPH
1. When we were planning section 2 with the slime part, we didn’t think carefully about the weight that was needed to
actually knock the cup of the slime over. We also didn’t think we would be using 4 bottles of slime which made it even
harder to find a way to knock it down. Next time, we can calculate the correct and proper weight for both parts of
section 2, and find the correct material to use.
2. In the video we got the idea from, they had materials holding the whole cup upside down, making it easy to align the
cups. But we used strings to hold the cups, which causes the cups to dangle around and they weren’t aligned from
the start. To improve, we need to actually find materials that are able to hold the cup upside down so we can get rid of
the aligning problem.
3. The reason we had to mix 4 bottles of slime together was because it wasn’t enough to pull down the cloth with the
ball on top. It worsen the problem at the start of section 2 since the more slime we use, the heavier the cup is, the
harder it gets to knock the cup over. To fix this, we need to calculate correctly from the start so we don’t waste time
measuring both cups and ending up in a cycle like this time.
4. When we tried pulling down the cloth slowly to see the possibility of success in section 2, we saw that there is very
little chance that the ball will fall to the targeted spot to hit the dominoes and activate section 3. Also, the ball kept on
just rolling to the gap between the middle instead of rolling forward and falling onto the table below. Next time, we
can make a pathway for the ball to fall onto the target to increase the success rate.
5. When we were planning, we were in a rush so we just thought that we’ll figure how to make the touch-screen pen
work later. When the time actually came, we couldn’t come up with any functional ideas so we had to give the phone
and touch-screen pen part up. To prevent this mistake, we have to remember to plan each part and detail out carefully
and structure it correctly before actually building it.
6. Since the vibration from the phone wasn’t enough to knock the paper ball over from a flat surface, we tried switching
devices, but the best solution was to help give the paper ball an easier slide by using the binders to make a slanted
surface.

Answer the following questions to explain the impact of your solution.

EXPLAINING THE IMPACT

●To what extent has the client’s or target audience’s problem been solved?
All the solutions that I have written above can help fix a lot of the main problems for us to be able to make the machine work for a better and more
successful video next time for the client. The reason our machine was not able to work on our filming day was because we were all putting it
together in a rush and we didn’t pay attention to little details such as the flow of the ball and the positions of each part. If we were to use the
solutions and fix the machine and then build it again with more time, I believe that we’ll be able to make the machine work.
● How does this solution improve the client’s or target audience’s situation?
It shows them what we face during the progress and if the audience were inspired and wanted to build something similar to our machine, they will
know what to avoid and how to solve the problems that they face. This can help prevent them from making the same mistakes that we did. They
can also learn a lot from our video. They can learn about how to plan and think on improving their own machine. For some people, they came for
satisfaction in our video. They won’t get much since our machine did not succeed, but I think what makes our video much more interesting is the
progress and how exciting it looks to actually try building one and testing it out. Some people may be satisfied to get to see our journey of making
this machine.
● To what extent has the design brief been met?
I would say that the design brief had been met at about 60 percent of the resulting machine. There were minor changes to the materials we used
in section1 but most of it still looks and works the same way. We had to change the transition from section 1 to section 2 a bit due to wrong
calculations but the slime was still a big part of the machine. Section 3 changed a lot since we needed to make the activation of section 3 easier,
we had to make the materials lighter and easier to move. We had to cut off the phone part and turn the function into simple gravity for the tennis
ball to roll down the slide and hit the paper ball into the trash can. In conclusion, there were changes made to the transitions and materials, but the
main idea and points of the machine still remain and are still the most significant and interesting part of the machine.
As you can see, we had to make some last-minute changes but we tried our hardest to keep the important and special parts of the machine the
same.
