Essential Question: How can the community support the homelessness crisis?

Three Points to Prove: #1: educating yourselves on the issue

#2: donating to help them get back on their feet
#3: engage with the homeless community

Point that this Source Proves: #1: educating yourselves on the issue

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

In the middle of the article, The Times Editorial Board stated, “Contrary to popular belief, the homeless
in Los Angeles are not mostly mentally ill or drug addicted, raving or matted-haired or frightening —
although a sizable minority meet some of those descriptions” (The Times Editorial Board).

Homelessness is not an easy fix: “People living on the streets are there because of bad luck or a series of
mistakes, or because the economy forgot them” (The Times Editorial Board).

The Board reported that there’s “All the great social issues of American society play out in homelessness
— inequality, racial injustice, poverty, violence, sexism.” (The Times Editorial Board).
Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):
This website an Opinion Editorial created by the Los Angeles Times informs you that not all
homeless people are out on the streets because they are crazy, drug-abused, or mentally ill. Those are only
a few reasons of why some members of the homeless community are out on the streets. So, by educating
oneself about the homeless community, one can stop making assumptions. As the Editorial Board says,
contrary to popular belief, many assumptions have been just thrown around; but, instead of stereotyping
them society should learn more about the issue.
Since many people want to help fix homelessness it would be hard due to the fact most homeless
people are homeless because of bad luck and bad timing. So, by the help of everyone like government
officials, activists, and many more, public figures can inform others about the situations homeless people
might be going through. The board wanted to persuade readers that due to America’s economy, they often
feel that the homeless community is often forgot about due to the ongoing other issues they are facing.
The board mentions the different reasons why people become homeless; some are by choice, but
the other part of them didn’t ask for it. Something that influences it is the social issues America faces
today such as inequality, racial injustice, poverty, violence, sexism. When people are put in this position,
it makes it hard for them to get out because they didn’t ask to be judged by how they look or how much
they make. These people are the ones who just need a helping hand to get back on their feet in order to get
their life back together.

#3: engage with the homeless community

Point that this Source Proves: #2 engage with the homeless community

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

As Becky Blanton college professor stated, “‘You aren't homeless. Why are you really here?’ Other
homeless people didn't see me as homeless, but I did. Then the professor listened to my story and he said,
‘You have a job. You have hope. The real homeless don't have hope.’” (Becky Blanton).

Homeless should not be criminalized: “The working homeless, primarily remain invisible. But if you ever
meet one, engage them, encourage them, and offer them hope. The human spirit can overcome anything if
it has hope” (Becky Blanton).

Becky reported that “My talent, my integrity, my values, everything about me remained the same. But I
had changed somehow. I spiraled deeper and deeper into a depression” (Becky Blanton)

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This Ted Talk given by Becky Blanton explained her experience with homeless and encounters or
challenges she had to face. As much as she went through, she overcame adversity, she had hope and that
was her underlying message. Becky shared that homeless don’t have hope and as she was on the brink of
giving up, she decided that the interaction with the college professor made her push through. He showed
her that real homeless don’t have the hope and look in their eyes like she had.
While homeless people are stigmatized and often degraded for living on the streets or in the
vehicle, we need to stop this because as members of the working-class homeless community they just
aren’t having the chance to find a place to live and get back on their feet. As hope is the key thing when
we engage with homeless, we need to encourage them and tell them things will get better it just takes time
because like Becky said, “The human spirit can overcome anything if it has hope” (Becky Blanton). So,
you don’t need to offer the materialistic things but giving them a peace of mind can impact their lives.
Being homeless often changes you as Becky stated she felt everything was the same but when
entering slowly into her depression it got out of hand. She reached the point where she thought no one
would notice if she had killed herself because homeless are often recognized as invisible. But being given
a chance changed her life when a renowned journalist used her essay. This engaging piece of work had
changed her life for the better because someone actually engaged themselves with the homeless
community and help a talented writer get back on their feet

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):
As Julia Lang stated, “‘When you’re that destitute and have gone through so many complicated situations,
what are the chances that your credit’s going to be good?’” (Julia Lang).

To get back on your feet it takes help: “It had taken her more than three years, help from at least three
social workers, and thousands of dollars, but she was finally stably housed. At least, for a year” (Monica
Potts).

With meeting a very “nice man in a 7-Eleven parking lot told them about a former high school turned
community center on the eastern side of town called Cubberley. He’d walked up to their van after
recognizing signs of life in the car, tired faces among the junk piling up in the back” (Julia Lang)

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

When you don’t have the basic necessities to live and you don’t really have a stable job it is hard
for homeless to establish any credit due to the fact, they have nothing. This reason keeping them from not
having a low-income housing makes the situations worse. But with donating time and effort to help
someone find a way to establish credit or a way they can get around it helps them big time. Places expect
these people to have many things like a stable job or good credit in order for them to be even accepted in
an affordable housing, but if they had all of those things, they wouldn’t have been on the streets so long.
Getting back on your feet is such a hard thing to do due to the fact being homeless is exhausting
and comes for many health problems. In order to get back on your feet you need to admit you need help
and need to go find people who care about this situation in order to get your life back on track. Since
Suzan went for help, they were able to help her find a place where she could lay her head, they were able
to find a government payed phone, they even helped her with drafting a letter that gave her time to find a
home. There are people who are passionate in donating their time to those in need, but it takes the effort
of the person to reach out.
A small act of kindness is something that can go a long way in life because it shows someone
hope and that they care about you. So when that man offered up a place where they could go and shower
and lay there head for a while without the worry that the cops were going to come and give them a ticket
for loitering made a difference it shows people out there care for the homeless population and they are not
invisible

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

As Lisa Biagiotti interviews homeless members off the street they stated, “I’m not homeless I’m
houseless homeless is a state of mind” (homeless member 4:27)

Homelessness comes in different forms: “I have full healthcare and full medical benefits but no home, I
am living a dying dream” (homeless member 24:29).

We know that the main attributes to homelessness is “disenfranchisements, lack of jobs, lack of
education, racism, and addiction” (police officer 34:18)
Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):
Sometimes when you work really hard you can have some major setbacks that can push you off
the edge. Even when you have a job or is looking for one you can become homeless. As one of the
homeless members said in the video that they are not homeless they are just houseless that being
homeless is just a state of mind. While saying homelessness is a state of mind it means that if you think
your homeless you will be but if you believe that it is temporary then you will get through it.
Homelessness is something you can overcome if you don’t fall into the mindset of being homeless but
just houseless.
Being homeless in America is hard because you can have a good paying job with full benefits but
still be homeless. This shows the economic decline of our society that puts these people on the streets and
increases our homeless community. This is why they said they are living a dying dream; they dream of
being rich and successful but with the economic decline it makes it hard for people to get there unless
they have a high paying job. With thinking this is a dying dream it ruins the minds of the homeless
members that our trying to get out. This ruins the hope that they have by showing them this dream they
are chasing is a dying one.
Some facts about homelessness is that not there are different reasons on why people are out on
the streets. Some of it is due to disenfranchisements, lack of jobs, lack of education, racism, and addiction
with all these possibilities we can just assume that people are there due to alcohol and drug abuse. This
shows that more people need to educate on the issue and instead of discouraging them help them out give
them a little bit of your time. By engaging with the homeless community people get more knowledge on
the issue and we can become a more unified community by not seeing them as outcast because of their
social standing.

Point that this Source Proves: #1

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

As Peter Somerville stated, “We have failed to recognize the full significance of unemployment in the
homeless dynamic” (Peter Somerville).

Homelessness can be explained in different ways: “homelessness is to be explained in terms of a specific

combination of structural factors and individual vulnerabilities” (Peter Somerville).

With knowing “the main problem with all of this discourse is that it is disconnected from the reality of
human experience: it discounts that experience or attempts to reduce it to a single dimension (lack of
housing) and then produces statistical associations that do not seem to reflect any real social relations”
( Peter Sommerville).

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

People tend to look at the homeless community different when they are trying to help themselves
out and find a job. They are often turned away because they don’t look the part when actuality they just
don’t wat to hire some who is living on the streets. The reason why some people experience homelessness
is due to housing and labor markets they are facing as a lower income person. People tend to judge how a
person looks other than the fact maybe they have a good work ethic but due to social standings they often
get pushed to the side and forgotten about. This is why when educating ourselves on the issue we need to
take into account everything they could be going through.
When someone is experiencing some type of structural and individual issue, they are often at a
heightened risk of becoming homeless. Basically, poverty is the biggest factor in homelessness because if
you had the money to get off the streets to create a better life for yourself you would. Homelessness is not
everything people think it is sometimes homelessness for someone is inevitable because they don’t have
enough money to make ends meet to provide for themselves. Understanding that homelessness can either
be due to social and economic problems or individual issues will help you gain more insight on the topic.
People who are homeless are disconnected from reality experience. This means that they are not
connected with the real world because they are not looked at as equal. People believe that in order to be in
touch with reality you need to reduce some issue that is affecting you from reaching it. Peter Somerville
believe that in order to regain contact with reality you need to get in touch with the structural and
individual issues in order to get a deeper understanding on the issue which is homelessness.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

As Richard Berry stated, “We're going to take this man at his word, and others like him. The man says he
wants a job, we're going to give him a job, and we're going to make our city an even better place in the
meantime” (Richard Berry).

Homeless people just want a chance: “And if you wondered if they really mean it takes us about an hour
to fill this van up in the morning, because almost everybody we ask takes a job for the day” (Richard
Berry).

Witnessing them “get out on the jobsite and they start working together, you start seeing amazing things
happen. They see teamwork; they see the fact that they can make a difference” (Richard Berry).

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

Instead of referring to homeless people asking for money they called them panhandlers. When
seeing people on the street with signs asking for money you often think what they are going to do with
money or if they are asking for a job if they are for real. So instead of giving them money by offering a
source of income could help impact their lives because they just needed a chance to prove themselves. A
program that offers a job like the one such in New Mexico could help impact the streets by offering
housing and beatification of the streets.
Again, like I was saying homeless often need just a chance to prove themselves. They don’t often
want to be pitied but often want to work hard for what they receive. But this is often hard to do because
they are looked at as outcast and no one wants to help a panhandler they don’t know. By going out to
street corners you can see that people actually want a chance to work that is why the van got filled up so
quickly because working for their own income helps with their dignity that they actually earned it.
By donating and offering them with resources to help impact their lives we can see how they
interact with the community when someone gives them a chance. Since they aren’t often given the respect
and dignity, they deserve by telling them you believe in them and that you need their help to beautify or
streets gives them a sense of hope that they are seen as actual people and not forgotten about. Creating
opportunities can help minimize the homeless population and inform other places to do the same as well.
