SRI RAMAKRISHNA
According to Vedanta, the impersonal Brahman has incarnated Itself in human form many times throughout the
history of mankind, and will do so again and again. Christ, Buddha, Krishna, and many others are accepted as
divine incarnations, each of whom proclaimed the same truth, but whose teachings were adapted to suit the
requirements of their time and area of influence.
Many people believe that God has incarnated again, in our age, in the form of Sri Ramakrishna. Ramakrishna lived
in Bengal towards the end of the nineteenth century. He was unique in that he practised in turn the spiritual
disciplines of all the sects of Hinduism, and of Christianity and Islam, and reached God-vision in each one. He was
thus able to confirm experimentally the statement of the Vedas: "Truth is one; sages call it by various names."
Ramakrishna came to preach the harmony of all religions. He would often say, "So many faiths are but different
paths leading to the one reality, God."
Even in his lifetime Ramakrishna was greatly revered and worshipped by many as an incarnation of God. After his
death in 1886 a group of young men who were his intimate disciples banded themselves together in a monastic
brotherhood, the Ramakrishna Order, which has since become a world-wide organization in which members
devote themselves to meditation and service of God in man.

SWAMI VIVEKANANDA
Swami Vivekananda, the leader of Sri Ramakrishna's disciples, is the interpreter of Vedanta for modern man in the
West as well as in the East. As the dynamic representative of Hinduism at the World's Parliament of Religions in
Chicago in 1893, he proclaimed the truth of all religions, the divinity of the soul, and the oneness of all existence.
He helped found the Ramakrishna Order in India and the first Vedanta centres in America and England.

UPANISHADS
The Upanishads form the concluding portion of the Vedas; and their philosophy, called Vedanta (anta meaning
"the end of”), is the basis of all Hindu systems of religious thought, both dualistic and nondualistic. Originating
hundreds, and some even thousands, of years before Christ, the Upanishads record the mystical experiences of
saints and sages. All ask and answer this one question: "What is that, knowing which, everything else is known?"
In Vedanta God immanent is called the Atman, or Self, and God transcendent Brahman; Atman and Brahman are
identical. Through meditation every individual can experience this truth for himself.

BRAHMA SUTRAS
The Brahma Sutras, also called Vedanta Sutras are aphorisms which harmonize and systematize in a logical order
the teachings of the Upanishads. The wording of the Sutras is so condensed that they leave room for differing
interpretations. This has given rise to several schools of Vedantic thought, the best known of which are
Shankara’s Advaita Vedanta (nondualism), Ramanuja’s Vishishtadvaita (qualified nondualism), and Madhva’s
Dvaita (dualism).
BHAGAVAD GITA
The Bhagavad Gita along with the Upanishads and the Brahma Sutras form the triple canon of the spiritual
tradition of India. The Bhagavad Gita is one of the best known and loved of all Indian scriptures, and may rightly be
called the Gospel of Vedanta. In a sense, it is a commentary on the Upanishads, describing in detail the various
methods, called yogas, which the spiritual aspirant may employ to achieve the goal of God-realization.
Written some time between the fifth and second centuries B.C., the "Song of God" is in the form of a dialogue
between Krishna, an incarnation of God, and his disciple, Arjuna, a perplexed spiritual aspirant whose doubts and
confusion find an echo in the hearts of many thinking people of today; while the solutions offered by the Lord form
a teaching relevant to urgent contemporary problems.

MEDITATION
SPIRITUAL LIFE
Mystical experience is the common meeting place for followers of all religions. True religion is a direct, immediate
experience of God in this very life - Hindus call it "samadhi", Buddhists "nirvana", and Christians "union with God" -
whereby, in a state of superconsciousness beyond the senses, man realizes his identity with the supreme Spirit.
It is this realization which transforms the spiritual aspirant into a man of God.
