So what do you think a biography is?

A biography is simply an account or detailed
description about life of a person. It entails basic
facts, such as childhood, education, career,
relationships, family and death.
Yes. That’s right! It is a literary genre that
portrays the experience of all the events
occurring in the life of a person mostly in
a chronological order.

Hence, we are to discuss one type which is Capsule biography is a type of biographical piece
a capsule biography. What do you think a wherein all the important elements of an
capsule biography is? individual’s personal life, including professional,
public, and private information, are included.

What are those elements? These elements are the name of the person, the
date of birth, place of birth, name of parents, and
major achievement, or sometimes, circumstances
surrounding death.

Thank you. It is called a capsule because

all of those elements are put into one
genre.

Writing a biography can be a fun

challenge, where you are sharing the story
of someone’s life with readers. So, how can Researching your subject
we do that? What do you think are the o ask the subject for permission to write the
steps in doing so? biography.

Correct! If the subject does not give you

permission to write the biography, you
may want to choose a different subject. If
you decide to publish the biography
without the subject’s permission, you may
be susceptible to legal action by the
subject.

If the subject is no longer alive, you

obviously do not need to ask permission to
write them.

Next. o Look for primary sources about the

subject.
You may create research questions to help
focus your research of the subject, such
as: - What do I find interesting about the
subject?
- Why is this subject important to
readers?
- What can I say that is new about the
subject?
- What would I like to learn more about
So, those questions could be of great help the subject?
on the conduct of your research by
simply giving you focus.
And the third is? Please read: o Conduct interviews with the subject and
those close to them.

Thank you. Interviewing people will

breathe life into your research- people you
interview can tell you stories that you
can’t find in a history book.

Who are the possible people you’re going Interview the subject as well as people close to
to interview in making a biography? them, such as spouses, friends, business
partners, family members, co-workers and peers.

There you go. How can you conduct the We can conduct the interview in person, by
interview? phone, or through e-mail.

Yes. That’s it. And for person interviews,

record them with a tape recorder or a
voice recorder on your computer or phone.

You may need to interview the subject and

others several times to get the material
you need.

Please read the fourth one. o Visit locations that are important to the
subject.

Thank you. To get a feel for the subject’s This could be the subject’s workplace and regular
history, spend time in locations and areas hangout spots.
that are meaningful or important to the
subject. Where do you think could be
those locations?

That’s correct!
o Study the time and place of the subject’s
What’s next there to do? Please read. life.

Yes. You need to contextualize the

subject’s life by looking at what was going
on around them.

Read the sixth one please? o Make a timeline of the person’s entire life.

To help you organize your research, make

a timeline of the person’s entire life,
starting from birth. Draw a long line on a
piece of paper and fill in as much of the
person’s life as you can.

So those are the things you need to

consider when you are researching your
subject.

After you have had researched your

subject, you will now write your  Go for chronological structure.
biography. Here are the steps to guide
you. please read.

Thank you. what do you mean by that? It means that in writing the biography, we would
start it from the subject’s birth to their later life.

That’s correct. And if they are no longer

alive, include information on their death.

What’s your next guide there?  Create a thesis for the biography.
Thank you. Please explain what could that It may be helpful to create a thesis statement or a
mean. sentence with your main idea for the biography.
Use the thesis to help you organize the rest of the
biography.
That’s right. For example; you may have a
thesis statement about focusing on how
the person impacted the lives of the people
around him/ her.
Red the next guide please.
 Use flashbacks.
What is a flashback, class?
Flashbacks are when where you move from the
present to the past.
How could you apply that in writing a
biography? You may start with a present moment and then
include a scene of the persons past. Or you may
have one chapter that focuses on the present and
one chapter that focuses on the past.

There you go. What’s next?

 Focus on major events and milestones.
What could be those milestones or major
events, class?
Major events could include marriages, births, or
deaths, in the person’s life. They may also have
milestones like their first successful events.

That’s right. So you may focus on the

person’s accomplishment like maybe being
a topnotcher of a board examination or
winning a pageant that had change
his/her life.

Next.
 Identify a major theme or pattern in the
person’s life.
Explain, please.
Look over your research for any similarities
between events or moments in the person’s life.
Thank you. for example, you may notice
that the person’s life is patterned with
moments of tragedy, poverty and/or
misfortunes in life where they worked
hard and fought against larger forces. You
can use the theme of overcoming it in the
biography.

Read the next one, please.  Include your own opinions and thoughts
about the person.

Explain. As the biographer, you play a role in the person’s

life story. Do not be afraid to put your own
thoughts about the person in the text. Reflect on
your research and comment on how you view the
person.

Ok. Thank you.so that’s all your guide in

writing a biography. After you had written
your essay, you need to polish it before
publishing.

What must you do? Read and explain.  Show the biography to others for feedback.
- Once you have completed a draft
of the biography, show it to peers,
friends, teachers and mentors for
feedback. Ask them if they get a
good sense of the person’s life and
if the biography is easy to read.be
open to feedback so you can
improve the biography and make
it better.
Very well said. Revise the biography based
on feedback from others. Do not be afraid
to cut or edit down the biography to suit
the needs of your readers.

 Proofread the biography.

Next please. - Check the biography for spelling,
grammar, and punctuation. Read
the text backwards to check for
spelling and errors.
Very good. Having a biography riddled
with spelling, grammar, and punctuation
errors can turn off your readers and result
in a poor grade if you are handing in the
text for a class.

And lastly. Please read and explain.

 Cite all sources used in the biography.
- Most biographies will include
information from sources such as
books, articles, magazines, and
interviews. Make sure you cite
any sources you quote directly or
paraphrase. You may use in- text

researching your subject. Writing the
biography and polishing it before you
publish.

Do you have any clarifications?
