RA 10533 - AN ACT ENHANCING THE PHILIPPINE BASIC EDUCATION SYSTEM BY STRENGTHENING ITS CURRICULUM AND
INCREASING THE NUMBER OF YEARS FOR BASIC EDUCATION, APPROPRIATING FUNDS THEREFOR AND FOR OTHER
PURPOSES

A. Differences of OLD and NEW Curriculum

The old and the new curriculum have similarities. Both old and new curriculum aims to give equal opportunity to Filipino
learners’ for basic education and be ready for a lifelong learning.

B. Differences of OLD and NEW Curriculum

The old and new curriculums have significant differences. For the old curriculum which Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) was
implemented in 2002, the learners will spend 10 years in his/her basic education. Six years in elementary and four years in
high school. Pre-school is optional choice for parents. But when the children ages of 6 to 7 must be enrolled in the first grade
but children with ages 8 and above can be enroll in the grade level that they belong to, but if a child cannot write or read in
Filipino or English subjects he/she must enrolled in the Grade 1 level regardless in his/her age. Also, BEC decongests the
overcrowded curriculum. This curriculum focuses on the basics of reading, writing, arithmetic, science and patriotism. Values
is integral to all the subject areas. The Integrative and interactive teaching-learning approaches are stressed. These are
characterized by group learning and sharing of knowledge and experiences between teachers, between teachers and
students and among students. For instance, under the old curriculum, English teachers prepared lesson plans for English and
values teachers prepared for values education. Under the BEC, the English and Values Education teachers work together on
their lesson plans. For High school math shifts from the spiral system which introduced all math subjects in every level to the
linear, sequential approach where only Elementary Algebra is taught in 1st year, Intermediate Algebra in the 2nd year and
Geometry in 3rd year. However, the new curriculum K12 which was implemented in 2012, the learners will spend 12 years in
his/her basic education. Six years in elementary and high school. Kindergarten is prerequisite. When the learner is 5 and 6
years he/she must be enrolled to Kinder because he will not be admitted to Grade 1. Students in high school also must enroll
for additional 2 years, or their Senior High for the reason that they can find a job even not taking tertiary education. In K12, the
curriculum is learner centered, this the reason why Mother Tongue Language (MTL) was created. The purpose of MTL is the
child may use his native language or the first language learned by a child, which he/she identifies with, is identified as a native
language user of by others, which he/she knows best, or uses most. In addition, this curriculum is relevant, responsive and
research based, culture-sensitive and be contextualized and global. Moreover, this curriculum uses pedagogical approaches
that are constructivist, inquiry-based, reflective, collaborative and integrative. The goal of the enhanced K to 12 Basic
Education Program is to create a functional basic education system that will produce productive and responsible citizens
equipped with the essential competencies and skills for both life – long learning and employment. The program will enhance
the basic education system to full functionality to fulfill the basic learning needs of students.

C. Suggestions
My only suggestion for this curriculum is simple, go back to the basic. Focus on reading, writing, arithmetic, science and
patriotism. Also, we have to rebirth the subject Good Moral and Right Conduct because students nowadays seem to forget the
values that we Filipinos are proud of. Finally, Mother Tongue Language should not be use across to also subjects, but make
MTB as a subject. English should be are medium of instruction because in the real world competition is stiff.
