One of the major marketing activities in an organization is the development of strategic planning.
This strategy outlines the organization road maps to successfully achieve its objectives. Tactical
planning relates to specific markets or market segment and the development of marketing programs
that will fulfill the needs of the customer in those markets. The final outcome of these activities are
the marketing plan which outlines how the organization will combine product, price, and distribution
and promotion decision to create an attractive offering to customers.

Example of Marketing Plan: Selling Breakfast to University Students

The café owner requires the restaurant to sell 200 sandwiches to University students in the morning.
Below is the marketing plan developed by the establishment:

Strategic planning

· Preparation time: 90 minutes (5.00am – 6.30am)

· Time of sales – must be between (7.00 – 9.00 am)

· Location – lecture halls

· Size of sandwiches – moderate to large

· Pricing – RM1.00 – RM3.00

· Promotion – Word of mouth, social media.

Tactical Planning

· Sandwiches must be easy to eat.

· The wrapper must be easy to open, transparent and easy to dispose

· Sandwiches will be offered at RM2.00 each by three sandwiches at RM5.00. Easy to manage
the balance of the transaction.

Marketing Plan

· Product: 3 layer Half sandwiches with eggs, vegetable and mayo

· Pricing: RM2.00 each

· Promotion: Buy 3 sandwiches at RM5.00

· Distribution: Lecture Hall between 7.30am -9.00am

· Costing: Bread RM4.00 (20 slices @ RM0.20 each), egg @ RM0.40 each – 2 sandwiches, 4
vegetable tomato RM5.00 @ 8 pieces/tomato-2 per sandwiches, Mayo RM5.00 jar @ 20 sandwiches

· Each sandwich will cost: Bread RM0.40 + Eggs RM0.20 + Tomato RM0.30 + Mayo RM0.25 =
RM1.15 / 2 (Half sandwich) = RM0.575 each half sandwich.

· Total cost of 200 sandwiches X 2 = 400 half sandwiches X RM0.60 = RM240.00

· Sales from 200 sandwiches X 2 = 400 half sandwiches X RM2.00 = RM800.00

· Net profit: RM800 – RM240 = RM560

Here the cost of wrapping material and promotion plus electricity and manpower must also be
factored in in order to get the best net profit margin.
