Course Description:
Chemistry 2A is a part of a two-semester sequence Introductory Chemistry course designed for
allied health majors. Chemistry 2A introduces students to basic inorganic chemistry principles
such as chemical structure and bonding, nomenclature, chemical reactions, gas laws, solutions,
stoichiometry, and nuclear chemistry. Chemistry 2A is a math-intensive course. Students are
expected to solve word problems using algebraic manipulations. At a minimum, students are
expected to have completed Math 50 with a C or better. This course is not open to students with
credit in CHEM 1A or equivalent.

Text and Tools:

1) Fundamentals of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry 7th Ed. With Mastering
Chemistry by McMurry and et. al.
2) Woodland Community College Chemistry 2A Laboratory Manual
3) Scientific Calculator
 Graphing Calculators and Smart Phones will not be allowed for quizzes and
exams
4) Safety Googles

Student Learning Outcomes:

Learning outcomes are skills that a student will have obtained after completing a course. You
receive the maximum return on a course when you are mindful of the various learning outcome.
Upon the completion of Chemistry 2A, you should be able to:

1) Solve calculation problems involving theoretical yield and percent yield of chemical
reactions.
2) Balance chemical equations.
3) Convert chemical names to chemical formulas and vice-versa.
4) Apply mathematical concepts to solving quantitative stoichiometric problems.

Grading:
Students’ evaluations will be based on exams, homework sets, quizzes, and laboratory
assignments. All assignments are to be submitted by the deadline. Late submissions are subjected
to a deduction of points. I will drop the lowest regular exam at the end of the semester. There

will be NO make-up exams, lab assignments, and homework assignments. The final exam will
be administered on May 18, 2020 at 5:30 pm.

Mastering Chemistry:
The majority of the problem sets assigned in this course will be from the Mastering Chemistry
online homework system. Thus, students must have access to this system. Students can use the
following link to register:
https://www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com/northamerica/masteringchemistry/. The Course ID
is MCSTEWART2614977. The online system along with the eText is priced at about $120.00.
The online system without the eText is about $70.00.

Academy Integrity:
Please review WCC’s policy on academic dishonesty. Violation of this policy will result in
disciplinary action. https://wcc.yccd.edu/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/2019-20-CATALOG-
FINAL.pdf

Laboratory:
Participation in the lab portion of the course is highly recommended. There will be NO make-up
lab assignments. The lowest lab grade will be dropped at the end of the semester. Students are to
read all lab procedures before class and adhere to all lab safety rules. Safety goggles and closed-
toe shoes are required.

Students with Disabilities:

If a student finds that they will require special accommodations during the course, he or she must
visit the Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) office. The instructor will gladly work
with the student and the office to make the necessary arrangements.
