Dear Tatsanai Puranupakorn,

My name is Eric and I am a Grade 7 student in Mr. Fernando Year 1 Science Class. This unit we have
been learning about ecosystems and Earth’s spheres and cycles. For the summative we have been
looking at ways to reduce our ecological footprint, which is how much space is needed for everyone on
Earth to live like one of us, at APIS.

I am writing you today to tell you about my plan to reduce and stop the air pollution within our
community. Air pollution is a major problem in our society in which the atmosphere is polluted. In
Thailand, the problem is severe because while the government is trying to stop it, the pollution is
speeding up. According to aqicn.org, the days with high AQI (Air Quality Index) has been increasing
every year. In 2018, there was 1 day in which the Chiang Mai’s AQI was over 200 (unhealthy), but in
2019 there were 8 days. This shows the extremely increased air pollution by years in the region. This is
mainly caused by the emission of air pollutants from transportations, factories, and industrial and
fossil-fueled power plants. Within these causes, construction of infrastructures also heavily affects this
problem, especially in Thailand. Even agriculture, household activities, and nature cause air pollution!
Then, heavy consequences follow. First, the air pollutants break down the ozone layer to let the UV rays
into the Earth’s atmosphere and speed up global warming, as well as being greenhouse gases themselves.
Second, the air pollutants can cause serious respiratory and cardiovascular problems (problems in lungs
and hearts) in organisms, including ourselves (human). Finally, air pollutants like sulfur oxides and
nitrogen oxides can be acidic in the atmosphere, combine with water, and cause acid rain. Air pollution
affects the atmosphere because air pollution is basically polluting the atmosphere. Air pollution also
affects the other spheres because acid rain is caused by air pollution and rain falls to the ground,
affecting everything: hydrosphere, geosphere, and biosphere. Other than acid rain, the air pollution
causes respiratory and cardiovascular diseases to organisms and therefore affects the biosphere. Global
warming, caused by air pollution, also changes the climate and moves the habitats and heavily affects the
biosphere. Overall, air pollution affects all of Earth’s spheres quite heavily.

I think this problem could be easily solved by reducing and stopping the emission of air pollutants from
transportations, factories, (industrial and power) plants, construction sites, and burning crops. To do
this, first, we have to alert others (organizations, factories, businesses, farmers, and government) about
the issue and how much they could make the issue worse. Then, action has to be taken by the individual
or a group that owns the factories, plants, or/and the construction sites to reduce the emission of the air
pollutants. For factories and plants, they need to use filters. For construction sites, spray water and
replace and use less toxic and hazardous materials. For burning crops, the farmers have to stop burning
and find a new way not to burn. One way is to use a Happy Seeder. According to cimmyt.org, Happy
Seeder is cutting and pulling off rice, putting wheat in that place, and using rice for fertilizing, which not
only helps air pollution, but also gives 10~20% more profit for the farmers! Government also has to
build constitutions (laws) to support this and help reduce air pollution. Finally, we also have to take
action. We should first use as few transportations that use oil as possible. If we are not able to reduce,
we need to use more public transportations. We should also use energy efficient products and turn off
energy-consuming products when not in use in order to lessen the use of energy which could have been
produced from the fossil-fueled power plants.

Not only is my solution good for the environment but it will also benefit Thailand by reducing health
problems caused by air pollution and make the air clear. By reducing health problems, less people will be
sick and be more productive, as well as less resources will be needed to heal the people. Also, the air will
be clear, so the aesthetics and the view of some places will be a lot better without the pollutants. Finally,
eliminating the air pollution will improve the image of Thailand because it has less air pollution. Without
the burning season and the air pollution in the cities, lots of tourists will love to come to Thailand and it
will potentially benefit Thailand financially because of the money that comes from increased tourism,
especially in the burning season.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my proposal to solve the problem of air pollution by reducing
and stopping the emission of air pollutants. I am excited to see our school improve and become more
ecologically aware.

Sincerely,
