THE EFFECT OF MICROSOFT EXCEL AND MYOB IN LEARNING ACCOUNTING

 Here I will explain the relationship between technology and my major, accounting. I will
explain 2 technologies that I used, and I learned during lectures, namely Microsoft Excel and
MYOB (Mind Your Own Business).
Information Technology According to Bambang Warsita (2008: 135) Information Technology is
a means and infrastructure (hardware, software, use ware) system and methods for obtaining,
sending, processing, interpreting, storing, organizing and using data meaningfully.
According to Bodnar and Hopwood (2004: 1), accounting information systems are collections of
resources, such as people and equipment, that are designed to convert financial data and other
data into information that is communicated to various decision makers.
So, from this explanation it can be concluded the understanding of information technology is any
technology that can help in making, changing, storing, communicating and or disseminating
information.

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application program created and distributed by Microsoft

Corporation. Microsoft Excel uses spreadsheets for data management and performs Excel
functions better known as Excel formulas.
A spreadsheet is a collection of cells consisting of rows and columns where you enter numbers in
Microsoft Excel. The Microsoft Excel 2016 Cell Number consists of 1,048,576 Rows and 16,384
Columns or 17,179,869,184 Cells.
General functions of Microsoft Excel
Create, edit, sort, analyze, summarize, and format data and graphics.
Keep financial records and financial budgets.
Calculate and manage investments, loans, sales, inventory, etc.
Perform price analysis and research.
Perform statistical calculations.
Assist various business sectors to facilitate financial reporting.
Microsoft Excel Functions in Accounting
Calculate the amount of loss or profit of the company
Calculate the price of a product
Keep financial records and financial budgets
Calculating employee salaries
In my opinion Microsoft Excel is an application program that is still based on easy to use for
many people. But we must know what formulas are used to calculate an item or price. From my
experience in using Microsoft Excel I was confused and confused by the formula used for
calculations. Because every data you want to calculate has a different formula.

MYOB (Mind Your Own Business) is a software or accounting application that is useful for
inputting accounting transaction data, bookkeeping, and displaying financial statements
completely, quickly and accurately.
MYOB functions as follows:
Make it easy to prepare company financial statements efficiently and quickly.
The ability to display data quickly and easily

In my opinion MYOB is an application that is easy to use for beginners. And from my
experience using MYOB, I was initially afraid because, my lecturer once said that if one data is
incorrect when inputted, the other data will also be affected. But as I use MYOB, that fear slowly
disappears and is replaced with pleasure, but we must also be demanded to be more careful in
inputting data or transactions.

From the explanation above, it can be concluded that the use of the two technologies, namely
Microsoft Excel and MYOB, is very much needed nowadays, because with this technology, it is
easy for us to calculate and make financial reports quickly and easily.

From the small research I did I received 11 responses from the questionnaire that I had
distributed. Of the 11 responses 7 out of 11 people chose to use the application method in
accounting learning and according to them using the Microsoft Excel and MYOB are very
important.
From the study stated that 45.5% of them find it difficult to use Microsoft Excel, and also the use
of Microsoft Excel according to P.R can facilitate the calculation because in Excel there are
certain formulas that are available so that all you have to do is enter the formula while according
to A.K can simplify data input. And according to them, overall Microsoft Excel is very
influential in learning accounting because we as accounting students must be required to be able
to use these applications in line with technological advances and also with us mastering the
application we can speed up the work process.
Then from the study also stated that 91% of them found it difficult and normal when using
MYOB, and the use of MYOB according to VS was assisting in recording financial transactions
of a company while according to PR it could create a journal without having to write and make it
in a book manually . And according to them, overall MYOB is also very influential in learning
accounting because this application is used by accounting companies and helps accountants input
data and make financial reports.

So from the results of this small research it can be concluded that most students majoring in
accounting prefer learning to use technology such as Microsoft excel and MYOB compared to
manuals, and are very influential in accounting learning, also many advantages in using
technology, one of which makes it easier to keep a journal and also has the disadvantage of
having a time limit for use.
And my suggestion is that as accounting students we should learn more about some of the
technologies in the field of accounting because it will influence the future.
