CHAPTER I
A. Active Voice
Active voice is a grammatical voice common in many of the world's languages.
Active voice is used in a clause whose subject expresses the main verb's agent. In the active
voice, the subject always “does” the action of the sentence. Chronologically, the subject will
come before the verb in the sentence.
Most writing occurs in the active writing voice, as it is generally clearer and more concise. In
each of the sentences, the subject comes before the verb and object. The subject is “doing”
the verb in the sentence. This is called the active voice.
B. Passive Voice
The passive voice is used to show interest in the person or object that experiences an
action rather than the person or object that performs the action. In other words, the most
important thing or person becomes the subject of the sentence. Sometimes we use the
passive voice because we don't know or do not want to express who performed the action.
The passive voice is often used in formal texts. Switching to the active voice will make
your writing clearer and easier to read.
The active writing voice is contrasted with the passive voice. The active and passive
voices put emphasis on different elements of the sentence.
The active voice occurs when the subject “does” the action of the sentence.
The passive voice occurs when the action is done by what seems like it should be the object.
-When using active voice, the subject performs the action noted by the main verb.
3
-When using the passive voice, the subject is acted upon by another agent or an unknown
something.
4. Other words such as “with” or “to” may also used instead word ‘by’ depending upon the
subject of the sentence. These words are used in a few cases.
E.g :
active : I know him
Passive : He is Known to me.
