HOW THE ROMANS COOKED THEIR FOOD

Long ago the Romans used to cook their food just as the way hunters today
sometimes do. They dug out an oven in the ground, lined it with stones and made a
fire in it. When the improvised oven was well heated, they raked out the ashes, put
in the food and covered it. We learned about this from excavations in the city of
Pompeii. Pompeii was destroyed and buried during the eruption of a volcano
hundreds of years ago. When the city was excavated, ovens with wood and ashes
were found among the ruins. It is believed that just as the cooks were about to bake,
the fiery volcano rained out ashes and boiling lava and burned down the city.

WINDOW
Did you know that the word window actually has something to do with wind?
The first English windows were slits in the wall that let in so much wind that they were
called “wind’s eyes.” Gradually “wind’s eye” became window.
Ancient castles were as windowless as peasants’ huts. A hole in the ceiling let
out the smoke from the cooking fires. Finally, someone decided that narrow slit in the
wall would let out more smoke and let in the air. This opening also permitted light to
enter, but it was hard to keep bad weather out. People tried to do this by stretching
tapestries and sheepskins over their “wind’s eye,” and sometimes stuffing straw around
the corners.
At first only kings and queens used glass windows, but finally glass became
plentiful enough for the common people to use as well.
One of the kings of England imposed a tax on windows. Anyone living in a
house with more than ten windows had to pay a tax of 10 shillings a year. During the
next fifty years, this tax increased until many people had to brick up most of the
windows in their houses. This law was changed in 1845, when it was discovered that
windowless houses were bad for the health because they did not let in enough fresh air
or light.
God’s word is the “window” that brings spiritual light into our hearts. Jesus said, I
am the light world that whosoever believe in me should not abide in darkness.”
