MOBILE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS (Elective - II)

Duration: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 100

Instructions: 1) Assume suitable data wherever necessary.

2) Answer five full questions taking at least one from each
Module.
3) Assume value of path loss exponent is 4, unless mentioned
otherwise.
4) All symbols and abbreviations carry their usual meaning.

MODULE-I
1. a) Explain the importance of the equation N = i2 + j2 + ij in cellular communication
systems. What does the value of i and j represent? How are the values of i
and j used to find the location of the co channel cell on a cell grid? Explain
with a suitable example and a sketch. 6
b) If the signal to interference-ratio of 15 dB is required for satisfactory forward
channel performance of a cellular system, what is the frequency reuse factor
that should be used for maximum capacity if path loss exponent is 4 ? 4

c) Discuss the 'Hand off' strategies used in mobile communication. What is

forced 'Hand off'? 8
d) What are the advantages of 3G over 1G ? 2

2. a) List different types of handoff encountered in mobile communication. Explain

how a mobile assisted handoff is carried out. 6

b) For a Two-Ray model derive the expression for the received power at a
distance 'd' from transmitter. 6

c) A general design rule for microwave link is 55% clearance of the first Fresnel
zone. For a 1 Km link at 2.5 GHz, what is the maximum first Fresnel
zone radius? What clearance is required for this system? 4

d) What is scattering? How does it affect signal propagation in mobile

communication? 4
