1. An experiment to determine the formular of the compound M (OH) X.
You are provided with the following:
BA1 which is 0.1M solution of a hydroxide M (OH) X.
BA2 which is 0.2M hydrochloric acid solution.
Procedure:
a) Pipette 25cm3 or 20cm3 of BA1, into a clean conical flask and add 2-3 drops of
phenolphthalein indicator. Titrate the resultant mixture with BA2 from the burette
until the indicator just turns colourless.
b) Repeat step (a) above until you obtain consistent results. Record your results in the
table below.
Volume of pipette used=--------------------------cm3
(½mark)

Experiment 1 2 3
Final burette reading (cm3)
Initial burette reading (cm3)
Volume of BA2 used (cm3)
(2 marks)
i) State values calculate the average volume of BA2.
(½mark)

ii) Calculate the average volume of BA2. (2 marks)

c) Calculate the number of moles of;

i) Hydrochloric acid reacted. (1
mark)

ii) Metal hydroxide reached. (1 mark)

d)
i) Determine the reacting ratio of M(OH)x: HCL (1½
mark)

2
ii) Write the equation for the reaction that took place. (1½
mark)

2. You are given a solid Q which contains two cations and one anion. Carryout the
following tests to identify the ions in Q and any gas evolved.

TEST OBSERVATION DEDUCTION

a) Heat about two spatula end
fuls of Q in a hard test tube
gently and then strongly
until no further change.

b) To about two spatula end

fuls of Q in a boiling tube,
add about 3cm3 of distilled
water and shake vigorously
to form a uniform solution.
To the resultant solution,
add dilute sodium
hydroxide solution drop
wise until in excess.
Filter the resultant mixture.
Keep both the filtrate and
the residue.
c) To the filtrate, add dilute
nitric acid solution drop
wise until it is just acidic.
Divide the acidic solution
into four portions.

i) To the first portion, add

dilute hydrochloric acid
solution and heat.

ii) To the second portion,

add dilute sodium
hydroxide solution drop
wise until in excess.

3
iii) To the third portion,
add dilute ammonia
solution solution drop
wise until in excess.

iv) To the fourth portion,

add about 2cm3 of
barium nitrate solution.
d) Wash the residue, transfer
it into a clean boiling tube
and add dilute nitric acid
solution drop wise until it
just dissolves. Divide the
resultant solution into two
portions.
i) To the first portion, add
dilute sodium
hydroxide solution drop
wise until in excess
ii) To the second portion,
add dilute ammonia
solution drop wise until
in excess.
(18½ marks)

e) Identify the ions present in Q.

i) Cations……………………………………and……………………… (1 mark)
ii) Anion:………………………………………………………………… (½ mark)
