Personal injury or death can result if two persons are not used in the
following procedure.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during

performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service

Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Use this procedure in order to inspect the wear on the discs for the service brakes. This procedure can
also be used to estimate the remaining service life of the brake discs.

Each individual service brake uses an indicator pin to help determine the amount of wear on an
existing service brake disc. An indicator pin is located on each side of the front and rear axle
housings.

Note: The following steps require accumulator pressure for the service brakes.

1. Start the engine. Run the engine until the brake accumulators reach the cutout pressure (less
than 30 seconds).

2. Stop the engine. Engage the parking brake.

3. Thoroughly clean the area around the cap (1) for the brake wear indicator (1) and plug (2) .
Remove any excess paint that may be present on the flange face for the axle housing (6) .

4. Remove cap (1) and plug (2) .

Note: Check the friction material on the brake for wear by performing Steps 5 through 8.

5. Apply the service brake.

6. Push indicator pin (4) until contact is made with the brake piston.

7. Inspect the wear indicator pin (5) . Check the notch on wear indicator pin (5) . If the wear
indicator pin protrudes past the sleeve end (3 ) the worn brake components must be replaced.

8. Repeat Steps 3 through 7 for the other service brakes.

Note: If you install a new brake disc in any of the four service brakes, you must follow the
adjustment procedure. Repeat Steps 9 through 11.

9. Apply the service brake.

10. Push indicator pin (4) until contact is made with the brake piston.

11. Press sleeve (3) into the fitting body until the sleeve is flush with the end of the wear indicator
pin (4) .

Oil groove depth of the brake discs

Note: The oil groove depth is the most critical dimension. If the depth of the oil grooves on the
brake disc is too shallow, oil flow will be inadequate. This can cause excessive wear and
abrasion.

12. To provide an estimate on the amount of service life for a brake disc, refer to Table 2.

Table 2
Disc Thickness Wear Chart
Estimated Percentage of The Amount of Friction Material That Oil Groove
Remaining Brake Disc Life has Worn From the Disc Depth (1)

100 0.00 mm (0.000 inch) 1.05 mm (0.041

80 0.90 mm (0.035

60 0.76 mm (0.030

40 0.61 mm (0.024

Groove depth is the most critical measurement.
