3.1 Activities
The following are the 7 activities that I undergone throughout my Internship in the company:
1. Manage eXtensible Enterprise Resources Management (XERM)
2. Manage Engineering folders in Enterprise Product Data Management (EPDM)
3. Overall Quality Assurance (OQA) and Packing
4. Create Process Flow Chart
5. Create PMP
6. Create PFMECA
7. Progress report
Date Activities
Update machining time in eXtensible Enterprise Resources Management
1st week (28 June – 30 June)
(XERM)
2nd week (3 July – 7 July)
3rd week (10 July – 14 July) Manage Engineering folders in Enterprise Product Data Management
4th week (17 July – 21 July) (EPDM)

3.2. Description of Job
3.2.1 Engineering Folders
The engineering folders are 18 individual virtual folders that respectively store soft copies of
customer’s drawing, part specifications, company’s manufacturing process, details of the
machining time, the tools used and so on. The purposes of the engineering folders are to serve as
a backup for the hard copies, save up physical storage space and to make it easier for customer to
review. My assignment is to arrange the related files into their respective engineering folders.
For instance, files like the customer’s drawings will go into the ’01-Drawing’ folder and part
specifications will be in the ‘07-Customer Specification’ folder. Sometimes, customer’s items
would have some of their files missing or undone, like the Process Flow Chart, Process
Management Plan (PMP) and Process Failure Mode and Effect Critical Analysis (PFMECA).
And my additional task would be to create the files and complete them with the help from the
provided template.

3.2.2 Packing
Packing is the final stage of the manufacturing process. The finished metal parts are wrapped,
labelled and packaged in a box for shipment. For each shipment, product quantity may range
from 200 to 1000 pieces. It is quite a lot. Hence, I was assigned to aid the staff in wrapping the
products. Occasionally, I was required to perform Quality Assurance (QA) on the products,
where I check for presence of any physical defects, like scratches, dents or sharp edges. Parts
with obvious defects are to be rejected, then sent to the scrap for recycling.

4.0 Comment/Suggestion
Paradigm allows their trainees to freely rotate around different departments to help out.
And I find this very beneficial because not only does it reduce the staffs’ workload, but most
importantly, as an Intern, I get to gain exposure and knowledge to all kinds of management
system, practical skills and PC programs (XERM and EPDM). Also, it helps to create an
opportunity for me to socialize with the employees, improving communications skills and
creating social connections that are essential for my future endeavors.
Throughout my experience in Paradigm, the ‘project management’ skill is desperately
required. Thus, I feel that it is best if the project management syllabus will be taught in the third
year academic course for Aerospace Engineering School before the Internship phase instead of
implementing that syllabus in the fourth year academic course. For the future batch of Intern
students that are likely to be involved in the engineering department, it would be huge advantage
to them if they have a prior knowledge in the ‘project management’ field.
5.0 Conclusion
After going through an Internship program, I realized it really benefits me more than I
expected. It also changes my perspective on things, for instance, like realizing that studying in
USM only helps to prepare me mentally and strengthen my discipline, while the true engineering
knowledge, skills and experience only comes from the real world working environment.
I do hope that in the coming future, there will be more Internship programs like this
organized by USM, so that students can really adapt to the harsh working environment, sharpen
their practical skills and knowledge and better their resume. This will definitely indirectly
increases the students’ chances of employment after graduation.
