Chapter 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the findings of the study. The data collected were drawn from six

Unemployed Meranao evacuees from Area 2, Sagonsongan, Marawi City .Such data were

gathered through distribution of checklists, five days non-participation

observation, and semi-structured interview.

I. PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT

This section presents the psychological impact perceived by participants. The data were

gathered through a semi-structured interview guide for the in-depth interview and a demographic

questionnaire.

A. Interview

This presents the responses of the participants to the interview questions regarding the

psychological impact. This reveals what are the participants’ age, sex, civil status, monthly

income, and livelihood.

EXPERIENCE OF LOSING A JOB

Q1: Describe your experience of losing your job.

Theme 1.1: Struggle of losing a job

P1 Ahhh.. I’ve never got a job. Ah. Yes! I mean I was a teacher at a school in Jeddah Saudi

Arabia for 6 months only.

P2 Ah….. right now, I belong to the one who is severely suffering.


P3 Of course, it hurts really. But, we always pray for Allah. It us just an examination for us.

P4 Ah… We lost our job since Marawi Siege happen and when we left our home in ground zero.

We’ve got sick because we have no good at all here.

P5 My experience of losing my job is too hard. Many things happened, lost and changed. Uhh.. I

tried to apply to companies.

P6 Hmmmm… losing my job… it is one of the hardest things that happen in my life. Of course,

instead you can help your family but then you lose your job… it is very hard for me.

INSANITY OF MENTAL HEALTH

Q3: Does unemployment affect your mental health that results to mental illnesses?

Theme 1.2: Mental health issues of unemployment

P1 I was okay. It’s not a big deal.

P2 If talking about stress, I didn’t get stress. It is under the control of Allah.

P3 Ah… yes, we are stressed. My husband got stroked because of Marawi Siege and because we

are just evacuees we stayed at Iligan and the atmosphere there is very bad.

P4 Oh yes. Everything we had was gone. I am depressed and stressed of course. I can’t sleep and

I think on everything.

P5 Depressed. Of course, I am depressed. It’s so hard just to stand by here at home no work no

income. And you are depressed of thinking stressed. And you can’t go to a place you want to go

because of being traumatized…..


P6 Stressed going depressed… also because many things happen and change… like if you want

to help.. but then… you have no job…

LOSS OF SELF-ESTEEM

Q4: Does unemployment reduce or decrease your self-esteem?

Theme: 1.3: Confidence and Hopes in coping unemployment

P1 I was okay. It’s not a big deal.

P2 Ahmm… yes, but somehow, we still hope on the blessings of Allah.

P3 Ahh… yes at first, but then we put our trust to Allah.

P4 Ahh… maybe yes… because it is not the way we used to. .

P5 Yes, yes,… because your knowledge is stock and you can’t even enhance and apply what

you’ve learned.

P6 Yes… because.. once, I applied a job at somewhere here a job as teacher… but one of a

qualifications is LET passer.. which I am not. And I lost my self-confidence… so again I take it

as motivation.

BENEFITS OF UNEMPLOYMENT

Q6: Are their advantage to being unemployed?

P1 Yes, there is. I became close with my family

P2 Right now, it doesn’t have advantage because I am unemployed. But, the benefit I gained is

worshipping Allah permanently.


P3 There are no advantages to being unemployed after Marawi Siege happened. We always keep

on thinking about our things that were left behind.

P4 Hm… yes but a little bit. Because the business we had there is big and in result we had

received a lot of income. But here is small.

P5 Ah… yes… because you are just stand by in home and have bonding with family. And I used

my time to pray in mosques.

P6 Ahh… advantage?... ah disadvantage yes many.. since I have no job, I can help my mother in

our business.

II. LIVELIHOOD AND SPIRIT IN HANDLING UNEMPLOYMENT

Q2: How do you handle this unemployment?

Theme 2.1: Independency and Resiliency after losing a job

P1 It was fine.

P2 Right now, my family members had family. Right now, I am dependent to one of my

daughters. They are the one who give finance to us.

P3 We find ways and we always rely on relief goods that are given to evacuees.

P4 Ah. We have to exert extra effort. The business we have before is different of what we have

now. It has very big difference.

P5 I am still applying… I am going with my friends who are looking also for a job. Also, I will

do my best.
P6 Hmmmm… losing my job… it is one of the hardest things that happen in my life. Of course,

instead you can help your family but then you lose your job… it is very hard for me.

Q5: What is your source of living before and after unemployment?

Theme 2.2: Livelihood of Meranaw Evacuuees on unemployment.

P1 We have small investments like houses. It’s our source of living as of now. We sell RTW,

imported items, like those things.

P2 Back on the days, I am one of the fishermen in Raya Madaya 1.

P3 Ahm…. Before we are selling a abaya, relo, etc. but we don’t have boutique. And I was also a

ustadha at ma’ahad marawi at Osmena Street.

P4 Ah… we are fruit vendors in Padian. And currently we have our Sar-sari store.

P5 I am businessman … businessman also. Our business is browa production.

P6 Before, I was a private tutor to kids. And now I have no job…
