Dahil sa depression at cyber bullying, K Pop star nag-suicide

Salve Asis (Pilipino Star Ngayon) - October 15, 2019 - 12:00am

Twenty
five years old lang si Sulli.

“I’m not a bad person.

Ayon sa https://www.psychiatry.org : “Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious

medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is
also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.
It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to
function at work and at home.”

“Depression symptoms can vary from mild to severe and can include:

Feeling sad or having a depressed mood

Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed

Changes in appetite — weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting

Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much

Loss of energy or increased fatigue

Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g., hand-wringing or pacing) or slowed movements and
speech (actions observable by others)

Feeling worthless or guilty

Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions

Thoughts of death or suicide

Symptoms must last at least two weeks for a diagnosis of depression.”

Eh buti keri ni Marian i-handle and bashers / haters.
Bumuwelta siya.

By the way, may issue ng depression ang kuwento ng pelikulang Nuuk nina Aga Muhlach and Alice

REACTION PAPER

The article is about the suicide of the K-Pop star Sulli after years of being bullied in the K-Pop
industry. I already heard about this issue as it has reached all sorts of media when the news broke out. The
K-Pop industry is at an all time high right now reaching audiences across the globe. But this kind of
exposure also leads to more people talking about how strict, unfair, and toxic the industry is. Sulli is not
the first celebrity to commit suicide after being under scrutiny of the conservative Korean public and she
is not the only one that was bullied and subject to unfair rules and harsh words from the audience.

First of all, this is not a well-written article. I think that an average highschool journalist can write
better than this. The article stated a few facts about the incident, defined depression with symptoms
(according to psychiatry.org) but did not elaborate on the other important related factors that could’ve led
to the suicide like the gravity of the threats that Sulli has been getting. Yes it was a match, it was related
to the topic but it definitely did not give justice to the article from psychiatry.org that it mentioned. The
author did not talk about the issue or depression himself, she just copy pasted what she saw form the
article.

The author started with a topic that was very sensitive. It could’ve talked about how depression
is a serious issue and how cyber bullying is affecting people. This is an issue where she can introduce the
importance of mental health awareness and report statistical data/history of depression or suicide related
to cyberbullying. Saying that depression is “iba talaga” and something that should not be ignored is not
enough.

It also went from reporting a suicide to praising another celebrity about a totally unrelated issue
and how she “can handle it better”, as if Sulli and Marian Rivera’s experiences were the same. This is
very unfair and disrespectful because to me it seems like Sulli’s experiences were reduced by being next
to Marian’s traffic issue. It’s also very disrespectful to promote a show, even though it has themes of
depression, because the author ended up praising facts about the show that are very unrelated to the
incident. It may be a sign of how insensitive or unaware the author is of the gravity of the topic that she is
talking about.

When I read this, I was surprised the article talked about the symptoms of depression. It would’ve
been helpful if it offered help for those who are suffering from it or if it talked more about how Sulli’s
case got worse and worse and how to not contribute to cyberbullying in this day and age. The facts are
appreciated but it felt like it was not attached to the story. It seemed like it just there to help make it sound
credible or just to add to the word count of the article. It did not relate the symptoms to Sulli’s case nor
did it advocate for mental health.

She blamed social media for depression, saying that it was because of people making a big fuss
about the small issues. I think that the original article about depression could be more helpful than just
being mentioned in this article. The facts presented could be of good use and could’ve been explained in a
more meaningful manner.
