First Impression about British
My holiday was finished, I am in the fifth grade now. The first day, I attended the class of Western Society and Culture which is focusing on British. In the beginning of this semester, my lecture explained all of the BCO (Basic Course Outline) which contains of 3 books as the references for the students that must be master on it and a special rule that every student should submit a journal, reflecting on one of those books that they have read in every meeting class. For the first journal, my lecture commanded us to read an Anne Collins` book, British Life, as a reference. After reading that book, I felt that I had a free special tour for visiting U.K in my imagination and got much precious information about British. The beginning pages showed the reader about the territories of U.K which sometimes people have got such terrible perception. People mostly said that U.K is England and England is Britain, so I could conclude that U.K is the other name of England and Britain. Those were really the worse theory that I have ever heard. In fact, U.K is a united country which has divided into four constituent countries, such as: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. As the special note, The Great Britain is in U.K too, but it is located between the geographical of England, Scotland, and Wales. The Great Britain and Britain is actually same; The Great Britain is the official name of eighth largest Island in the world and Britain is the popular name that people usually called. In my opinion, those information are very the most important things that people need to know deeply, even little bit short, it can give the great direction to people knowing the truth of a country`s identity and make them avoid from the blind knowledge then. In the next pages, I have found two different lifestyles significantly between British and my country, Indonesia. The first difference is on the habit of British that prefer to love wearing suits to the office. On the other hand, Indonesian women who prefer to choose blouse or blazer as the formal dress for working which will probably represent of seriousness without missing the trendy today. I have ever perceived the back hotel staffs for six months who often wearing blouse or blazer as their daily working dress when I have been a trainee in Surabaya Town Square Hotel. The second difference is on the way British people caring much of animals’ existence. I am amazed when knowing the story of rat in the platform became saved first by people around that station, while that rat might be bumped and died if this happens in Indonesia because honestly Indonesian has the less awareness to any kinds of animals. It can be proved by instagram news and its photos that because of the poor cat stole the fish, that cat was alive burned. In common, Indonesian also has the modern tradition for drinking tea or coffee in midday like British. If Afternoon tea or high tea is its popular name in Britain, so Indonesian is often called this as ngopi or ngeteh that they usually do depending on their mood without time limitation. People have their different own reasons for doing that, for example: Indonesian college today often go to cafe for discussing community or academicals sake, reducing the stress, eliminating the sleepiness, etc. We can see that the mini shop, more popular as warkop, near the campus almost rarely have less customers every day. Drinking coffee or tea has no rule here, because we can choose the cafe anywhere, whether in the high class cafe or mini cafe like warkop. As long as ngopi or ngeteh with the pleasant partners, this tradition will be more creating the good atmosphere. In brief, those information above are just the little piece of information in British Life`s book, by Anne Collins. It actually has more precious information for the rest that someday I can share to people around me or I can write in the other journals occasion. I hope that I can make my writing assignment become better in the next journals.
