.Dobet Gnahoré.
From the West African republic of Ivory Coast,
Dobet is widely acknowledged as the rising
star of African music. Having won the Radio 3
World Music Newcomers Award in 2006 at the
age of twenty-four, Dobet has continued from
her base on the French/Belgian border to
develop her music and her profile and as well
as putting on a storming performance at
WOMAD Charlton Park this year she won a
Grammy earlier in the year. Her warm
powerful voice is complemented by her skill
as a dancer and percussionist although she’ll
not be dancing tonight (for reasons that will
be apparent) and will be joined by a dancer
as well as her excellent band.
From Mandingue melodies to
Congolese rumba, from Ivory Coast
Ziglibiti to Cameroon Bikoutsi, from
4 Ghanaian High-Life to Zulu choirs, the compositions show a
pan-African sensibility and comparisons to both Miriam Makeba and Angélique
Kidjo have been made. The sanza, the balafon, the calebasse and bongos are
brought in to support the guitar, the vocal backup and Dobet’s warm and
powerful voice.
We are really grateful to Dobet and the band for stepping in at short notice to
replace Angelique Kidjo on the bill and we know she will put on a great show…

.Norma Waterson.
Legendary matriarch of the first family of English
folk in a rare performance not far from her native
city of Hull and her home village of Robin Hood’s
Bay. Norma Waterson was awarded the MBE in
the New Year’s honours list of 2003 and, as a
consequence, achieved a lifetime ambition by
appearing on the front page of the Yorkshire Post. Her first solo album
collaboration with Richard Thompson (amongst many others) almost beat Pulp to
the Mercury prize that year and her subsequent collaborative and solo work has
reinforced her stature as the leading voice of folk music in England. Her most
recent album with her daughter Eliza Carthy, The Gift, shows an artist still at the
height of her powers and in as fine (if not finer) voice than ever.
Richard Hawley recently interviewed Norma in her front room for his critically
acclaimed BBC Radio 2 series, The Ocean, which he says was a life-changing
experience... enough said.
.Jah Wobble’s Japanese Dub. Marta Sebestyén.

music with the influences of modern multicultural Britain creates something
compellingly original. The band have moved on dramatically from their Womad
showcase in 2007 with their recent Southbank performance garnering 4 star
reviews in the Guardian “They deserved their standing ovation” and Independent.
Their recent second album Empire & Love got the following review in The Times
“Three years ago this big, wild band challenged preconceptions of folk music, and
their return is another great ride. The folk hero Martin Carthy sings Come on Feel
the Noise, but here too is a haunting version of Scarborough Fair, which a young
Paul Simon once heard Carthy sing: you know the rest. The Napoleonic ballad My

Danto Aya.
This proud Tuareg refugee musician
originally from Ghat in Libya invites the
lonely desert spirits to come alive and

rhythmic singing.
Danto Aya’s music comes both from
his early memories of the singing,
drumming and circling camel riders back
in his home village, and from his later life
as a young man with his first guitar,
performing in the city of Tripoli with his
friend the famous Tuareg artist Selamy.
Since 2009 Danto has been writing,
singing and playing his own songs.
He made his full performing debut in the

I'll Go To T'Foot Of Our Stage: The Story Of Yorkshire
Pop Music, by Craig Ferguson, is published by yfppublishing.com

Meet the author ~ Ian Clayton

Ian is a jobbing writer, story teller and broadcaster. He loves
books, films and music. He is a traveller, a collector, a gatherer
and is passionate about finding the voice of the common
people. He still lives in the Yorkshire town where he was
born and lists his hobbies as tap-room conversation and
gentle subversion. Amongst other things he is a recognised
authority on the life and works of Billie Holiday, has a
fondness for the comedy songs of George Formby and
aspires to play blues harmonica like Jimmy Reed. He is
also a good friend of Richard Hawley.
Many of you will remember the session we ran last year where
he discussed his brilliant book about life and music Bringing It All Back Home.
Since then his new book Our Billie (Penguin Books) has been published to great
critical acclaim. It deals with, in the most touching and heartfelt way, the tragedy
that struck his family during a holiday in Wales. Ian will talk about the book as
well as opening the festival for us this year and we are delighted to welcome him
back. Hosted by Karen Atkinson, Director of Scarborough Literature Festival.
RedR – our chosen cause for 2010.
Each year millions of people around the world are affected by natural disaster
and conflict. RedR is an international charity that improves the effectiveness of
disaster relief by ensuring the
right people with the right skills
are available to respond to global
emergencies, to help save and
rebuild more lives.
RedR’s programmes deliver
essential technical and
humanitarian training and support to aid agencies and their staff, in the UK and
overseas in countries such as Haiti, Pakistan and Sudan. They also provide skilled
professionals such as engineers, logisticians and other aid workers to
humanitarian programmes around the globe.
Please help us today by making a donation or getting involved. We run several
events throughout the year, our most important ones being our annual Wear Red
for RedR campaign, the Virgin London Marathon and the Bupa Great North Run.
In addition to taking part in one of our events you can also support us by setting
