‘Project Kidsight’ set for Dec. 11

n Sand Lake Lions Club to provide
free vision screening for 1-5 year olds
Do you really know if your pre-school age child can
see well? Early detection and treatment of problems can
have far reaching impact on a child’s vision, learning,
and sometimes even their overall health.
To aid in detecting any major problems, the Sand
Lake Lions Club will be providing “Project Kidsight”
vision screening Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Kent District
Library-Sand Lake Branch, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. No
appointment is needed, but an adult representing the
family must be there during the screening and sign con-
sent.
The American Association for Pediatric Ophthal-
mology and other certified experts say that the best time
for treatment of many eye problems is in the pre-school
years and that many problems will not improve if left
until 8 or 9 before detection.
“Project Kidsight” is a program of the Michigan Li-
ons Clubs in cooperation with Children’s Hospital of
Michigan. The objective of the program is to screen
young children to detect poor vision or risk factors,
and is done by Michigan Lion volunteers using a spe-
cial camera. This takes about 10 minutes. The photos
are then sent to professionals at Children’s Hospital for
evaluation, and if further testing is recommended, the
family is contacted directly. The Sand Lake Lions have
been told that at least one child from previous screen-
ings was among the children with problems requiring
treatment. To date, about 5 percent of those screened
state-wide have been referred for further testing.
There is no charge for this service project of the Li-
ons, but donations will be accepted. You may also bring
in used glasses or drop them in the eyeglass Collection
Box at the Sand Lake Independent Bank at any time.
Remember, 10 minutes could mean lifelong better
vision for your child.

STATE
CHAMPIONS
The Newaygo Marching Band
finished another successful season
on Saturday, Nov. 6, with their per-
formance at Ford Field in the MCBA
(Michigan Competing Band Associa-
tion) State Finals Competition. State
finals is for the top 11 bands in each
class (Flight in MCBA).
Newaygo entered state finals
ranked first in the state in Flight IV.
(Flight IV is comprised of schools
with enrollment sizes from 1 - 781.)
The other 10 schools they competed
against were Hartford, Comstock
Park, Brooklyn Columbia Central,
Watervliet, Parchment, Atherton,
Durand, Godwin Heights, Grant and
Belding.
Each band performed for 15 min-
utes and at the conclusion of the
last band’s performance, the judg-
es’ results are tabulated, and then
placement awards are announced.
Newaygo finished the day in 1st
place, as State Champions, with a
score of 80.19, just ahead of Godwin
Heights’ 79.99
Rounding out the top five were,
Belding (77.3), Grant (75.96) and
Durand (74.33).
The Newaygo Marching Band
would like to thank all of the student
and parent volunteers who helped
make the season a success. Thank
you very much for your hard work
and support; we could not have
done it without you. They would also
like to thank all of the community
members and businesses who sup-
ported them throughout the season,
whether through various donations
or equipment usage.
A special thank you to Evergreen
Rental for the use of an open trailer
to haul props to and from competi-
tions, and to Timberland Equipment
of Newaygo for the use of the lawn
tractor used to pull the pit equip-
ment. A warm and very special
thank you goes out to the commu-
nity members and businesses who
welcomed the Newaygo Marching
Lions back into town via escorting
and a parade. Congratulations to the
students of the Newaygo Marching
Band on a great season.

Carson City Hospital receives quality improvement award

CARSON CITY – Carson City
Hospital has received the Michi-
gan Center for Rural Health’s
2010 Michigan Rural Health
Quality Improvement Award for
Quality Improvement Award -
Award of Excellence. The award
acknowledges quality improve-
ment efforts in inpatient clini-
cal performance in the care and
treatment of heart failure and
pneumonia, outpatient clini-
cal performance in the care and
treatment of chest pain and
acute myocardial infarction, and
customer service.
This is the second year the
Michigan Center for Rural Health
has offered this award. Carson
City Hospital applied evidence-
based medicine to improve care
processes in the treatment of
heart failure and pneumonia,
and overall customer service.
“Together our staff is dem-
onstrating we are providing
the very best in medical care,”
said Bruce L. Traverse, FACHE,
President and CEO of Carson
City Hospital. “Carson City Hos-
pital is committed to the tenets
of quality improvement that em-
brace evidence-based medicine
to improve health outcomes.”
Carson City Hospital’s mul-
tidisciplinary team embraced
evidence-based medicine in or-
der to review their current pro-
cesses and create interventions
that improved the treatment
of acute myocardial infarction,
chest pain, heart failure and
pneumonia, and overall cus-
tomer service. Clinical indicators
were based on the Appropriate
Care Measure (ACM), a compos-
ite score that captures whether
or not a patient received all the
care that he or she was eligible to
receive. The 2010 Michigan Ru-
ral Health Quality Improvement
Award – Quality Improvement
Achievement Award was based
on an ACM score of 95 to 100%.
“Award recipients are com-
mitted to providing their patients
with high quality health care,”
said John Barnas, Executive Di-
rector of the Michigan Center for
Rural Health. “(We are) pleased
to sponsor this award, which rec-
ognizes the dedication of hospi-
tal staff to provide the right care
to the right patient each and ev-
ery time.”

MORLEY — Ronald Gacek, 64, of Mor-
ley passed away Dec. 7 at his residence.
He was born Nov 13, 1946, in Goodrich,
the son of Joseph and Lorraine (Skelleng-
er) Gacek. During his working years he
worked as a truck driver for Joes Rubbish,
Waste Management and Sunset Waste. He

The parade starts at 6 p.m., at the

The Tri County Middle School Pom Team, coached by Kim Hayden, competed
in a major competition in Byron Center this weekend. They placed third in
Contemporary Dance and third in Jazz. The biggest honor was the last and most
prestigious award handed out, called the Tracy Weber Unity Award. TCMS Poms
won it for their teamwork, character, and skill.
This award was given the most attention of all awards, and the T.C. girls were
picked over such teams as Rockford Varsity, East Kentwood Varsity, and Jenison
Varsity. These kids and their coach, should be congratulated for representing Tri
County in such a positive way.
The Byron Center A.D. also called the team up before the competition began,
to offer condolences to them and our community for the loss of our former
principal, and teacher. The entire assembly (about 900 spectators) bowed their
heads for a moment of silence in honor and memory of Mark and Randy.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as

“Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.”
In Michigan in 2009 there were 61,486 reported car-deer crashes with 10 motorists killed and 1,648
injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn.
(Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in
the state’s highest accident rate).
What can you do?
• Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
• Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision.
• Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.
• Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
• Don’t swerve!
• Brake firmly
• Hold on to the steering wheel.
• Stay in your lane.
• Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.

Winter Itch
About this time of year a lot of people are miserable, not with the winter blues, or cabin fever, but with
Winter Itch. This is a condition of dry, itchy skin, usually with some small red bumps, sometimes little pustules.
Usually this is found on the upper arms, mid and upper back, chest and upper abdomen, and sometime on FAMILY HEALTH CARE
the legs.
Most of the time, it is related to a reduction of skin moisture and skin oil. It may also be aggravated by over
heating parts of the body by heavy clothing.
The solutions are fairly simple.
Run a humidifier in your home, especially in sleeping areas. Humidity should be between 45 and 65. There
should be a little condensation on the bottoms of the window panes. Not too much; that might ruin the
frames.
Drink adequate water (chlorine free). Most adults should have between 40-60 ounces per day. Coffee and
soda pop are not considered water. In fact, they are dehydrating and contribute to the problem.
Reduce the temperature of your bath or shower. Hot water removes some of the skin oils which are
needed to lubricate the skin. Also only soap and scrub the important areas of your body: hair, armpits,
