A Summary Statement on progress made by local bodies in respect of

solid waste management

There is no significant progress as such made by any local body. However, Jammu
Municipal Corporation has taken up solid waste management on the lines similar to Ambikapur city
as pilot project in one of the ward of Jammu city and model shall be replicated after its sustainability
is verified. Door to door awareness regarding source waste segregation has also been carried out in
many parts of the city by Municipal corporation.

Door to door practice of waste collection has been achieved by Municipal Committe, Reasi
and Cantonment Board, Satwari with covered transportation.
In Srinagar, there is only one landfill site at Achan where dumping of mixed waste is being
carried out. However, leachate collection and gas collection mechanism has been installed recently.
Annexure II

J&K STATE POLLUTION CONTROL BOARD, JAMMU

A summary statement on progress made by local bodies in respect of waste collection,

segregation, transportation and disposal

1. Collection of Municipal Solid Waste:

There is no door to door collection except in only few areas / towns, viz., Municipal
Committee Reasi, Cantonment Board, Jammu and few wards in Jammu city. The waste from
slaughter houses, meat & fish markets, fruit & vegetable market, which are biodegradable in nature,
are not collected separately.

2. Segregation of Municipal Solid Waste:

In the absence of any waste processing facility, and no secondary storage / segregation
facilities for MSW in Jammu region, no source segregation has been implemented by any urban local
body in the State.

3. Storage of Municipal Solid Waste:

Only primary storage facilities have been established by ULBs in the form of RCC Bins,
plastic bins, dumpers, Containers with few secondary storage facilities with closed sheds but with no
segregation in place.

4. Transportation of Municipal Solid Wastes:

Transportation of waste is carried out in heavy vehicles. Mostly the vehicles transporting the
MSW are open.

5. Processing of Municipal Solid Wastes:

There is no processing facility in the region except small scale vermicomposting being carried
out at MC, Bhaderwah and MC, Sunderbani. Training for Decentralized (on-site) processing of
garden waste has been provided by SPCB in co-operation with Department of Floriculture and is
being practiced in various gardens. Further, two no. of small pilot projects for promoting source
waste management by on-site processing / community composting have been initiated by J&K State
Pollution Control Board.

6. Disposal of Municipal Solid Wastes:

There is no authorized landfill site in operation till now except for open dumpsites in Jammu
region. Periodic burying of the waste is however, carried out with the help of JCBs to minimise the
visibility of waste. Disposal of waste is being carried out in unscientific manner on open unused lands
or hill slopes. In Srinagar, there is only one landfill site at Achan where dumping of mixed waste is
being carried out.
