Important
previous step.
Note
This indicates a helpful hint.
➡
This explains what the machine will do after you operate it as in-
structed.
-- Horizon International Inc. cannot anticipate every possible situation that might involve a potential
hazard. Therefore, the instructions in this manual and warning labels on the machine are not all-
inclusive.
-- All equipment shall be locked out or tagged out to protect against accidental or inadvertent operation
when such operation could cause injury to personnel. Do not attempt to operate any switch, valve,
or other energy isolating device when it has been locked or tagged out.
-- Do not operate the machine when any covers are removed.
-- Some of the drawings in this manual show the machine uncovered to help in explaining the details
inside the machine.
Work alone when you operate the machine. Letting someone else operate the machine
could cause it to start suddenly without warning, causing severe personal injury.
Keep your hands and fingers outside of the safety cover and away from any moving parts
while the machine is running. Otherwise, moving parts can cause severe personal injury.
Do not touch the milling cutter or the roughening cutter with your bare hands. Otherwise,
these may cause severe personal injury.
Do not remove or bypass any safety features. Without these protective features, moving
parts can cause severe personal injury.
Be careful not to pinch your hands when inserting a book block into the clamp.
Toxic gases may be generated when PUR is used. Be absolutely sure to install a smoke
extractor or similar device, and ventilate. Wear the protectors recommended by PUR manu-
facturers when cleaning the spine glue tank.
Keep the melting temperature of the PUR within the specified temperature range.
Do not use glue with a flash point below 210 degrees Celsius / 410 degrees Fahrenheit (EVA)
or 180 degrees Celsius / 356 degrees Fahrenheit (PUR).
When the milling guide and the nipper are set narrower than the clamp width, do not move
the clamps. Otherwise, the lower part of a clamp may hit the guide and be damaged.
Do not insert a book block into the clamp and run the machine during a changeover. This
could damage the machine.
Do not turn the spine gluing roller if the glue is not completely melted. Otherwise, the ma-
chine may be damaged. Measure the glue level when the surface of the glue is flat. If too
much glue is added, the glue may overflow from the tank when the spine gluing roller turns.
Do not set the temperature of the glue to 170 degrees Celsius / 338 degrees Fahrenheit or
lower if you are using HM-403 hot melt glue made by Horizon. If you are using some other
type of glue, do not allow it to overflow from the tank.
Do not use the machine for any improper purpose. Otherwise, the performance of the ma-
chine cannot be guaranteed.
If a jam occurs, remove all the jammed sheets before you start the operation again. Other-
wise the machine may be damaged.
Turn off the Power switch before correcting the cause of an overload. Otherwise, the ma-
chine may start suddenly, causing severe personal injury.
Work carefully when your hands are inside the machine, and keep them away from any
moving parts.
Turn off the Power switch before resetting the circuit breakers. Otherwise, the machine may
start suddenly, causing severe personal injury.
The spine glue tank is coated with fluorine resin. The service life of the tank will be short-
ened. If a hard object is used during cleaning, resulting in scratches on the tank. Use the
accessory scraper for cleaning the spine glue tank.
Do not use metal spatulas to clean the nipper mechanism. These will scratch the nipper,
causing the binding quality to deteriorate.
If the machine’s power cable will be connected directly to a circuit breaker on the power
distribution board in the building, ask a qualified contractor to do the job.
Do not connect the power cable before being instructed to do this. Otherwise, an electric
shock can cause severe personal injury.
Be sure to install all cables and hoses in areas where they will not catch your feet.
Be sure to install the mounting feet and use the leveling bolts to level the machine. Other-
wise, the binding quality may deteriorate, or the machine may be damaged.
The BQ-280PUR weighs 1,095 kg / 2,411.9 lb. Transport and install the machine safely, and
keep the weight of the machine in mind. Install the machine in a place which can support its
weight.
Install the machine correctly, and refer to the installation manual or installation instructions in
the operation manual before starting the machine. Otherwise, the binding quality cannot be
guaranteed.
