Description

We were shown a video about Crispy Crackers that could easily burn within a long time, the video
took place in the police station on March 5, 2016. In the video, there was a lot of police officers that
were involved. In the video, some officers doubted that Crispy Crackers are made of either plastic or
wood, because the Crispy Crackers was very thin yet it could burn for a very long time.

Analysis

According to our opinions, by posting that video on “Youtube”, they wanted to attract other
people’s attention and they wanted to raise awareness. In this video, there are a lot of barriers to critical
thinking, one of them is due to the use of language and that is judgmental words. The police officers
assumed that the crackers were made of either plastic, paper or wood, without any further research,
they said “unsur plastiknya banyak ini” and so on. This case could also be an egocentric tendency,
because they assume what they believe is true even though they have never questioned about it
before”. Not long after that, Crispy Crackers consumers believed them and that was possible due to a
fallacy called as “äd populum”, because it was really popular therefore they directly accepted the claim
and Crispy Crackers’ sales directly went down. However, according to www.bintang.com crackers
contain some fat or oil with low water content especially for the ones that are thin and have some pores
or holes. For that reason, every cracker would behave the same way when they are burned, to prove
that there is plastic as their ingredients, it needs to be done in a laboratory, and could only be done or
proved by those who have some background in lab or are experienced in science, not police officers.
Aside from that, BPOM already approved Crispy Crackers to be sold, because they already tested “Crispy
Crackers” and “Crispy Crackers” passed the test. After knowing and finding the information above, we
can also know that there is hasty generalization, because they conclude about “Crispy Crackers” from
just a small or limited information, without knowing about “BPOM, etc. To add to that, there could also
be another fallacy called as “cherry picking”, because they think “Crispy Crackers” were made of plastic
due to the past news about “kerupuk plastic”.

Evaluation

After analyzing the video, we believed that the video is a hoax, and is not true, because there
are a lot of aspects that proves all crackers could burn just like “Crispy Crackers”. Just like what we
stated before, crackers contain some fat and oil with lower water content and “Crispy Crackers” are thin
in size and they do have holes, therefore, they could easily burn (www.bintang.com). From this task, we
can learn that we should not trust anything so easily, we should question the credibility or the
information that are given to us. As a result, we won’t believe something that is not true or something
that is made up.
