PHOTOGRAPHY BOOK

2018

1
Last year was truly a wonderful time for FujiLove. Our community has
been constantly growing and the amount of wonderful photographs being
shared in the FujiLove Readers Group was just astonishing.

It was not an easy task to choose the photographs for our 2018 FujiLove
Photography Book, but in the end we hope we have come up with
a selection that will be a joy to look at.

It is a blessing to experience each of us seeing the world with her

or his own eyes, in a completely different way. That’s what photography
is all about. I am more than happy to share this 2018 selection of some
of the best FujiLove members images with you.

I would like to personally thank Alien Skin Software, makers of the

excellent RAW editing software application Exposure X3, for their support
while producing this book.

Enjoy!

This image was taken in Sa Pa; a town in the Hoàng Liên Son Mountains of
northwestern Vietnam. It had been raining for days during my visit
and the atmosphere with the rain and the lights was filmic. I’d already walked
down this hill just before I took the shot and turned around
to see the scene unfolding of the two bodies appearing out of the mist.

When I visit cities, I always try to dedicate a couple of days to get lost. I dive into the streets and roam around to find real people, real life. Ordinary,
random happenings... They are full of surprises. I saw this lady probably coming from a visit to her neighbour, going back home after a short stop
at the bakery. A routine for her became an eye pleasing scene for me - as an alien from an outer world.

While you sleep

As a nurse working on the Dyson Unit for Neonatal Care in Bath England, I wanted to use my love of photography to showcase some
of the aspects of neonatal care. “While you sleep” is from a set of photographs I took during a night on the special care area of the unit.
Captured within the shot is a neonatal nurse documenting clinical observations as a baby almost ready for discharge sleeps beside her.

Derelict Ship near Toronto

A stormy day on Lake Ontario, with high wind and fast-moving drizzle. Anchored in the harbour at Port Credit on Lake Ontario, there
is a derelict ship used as part of the breakwater. Set against the very distant and very foggy skyline of Toronto, it looked lonely and out
of place. Given the low visibility of the day, it looked to me like a ghost ship emerging out of that day’s monochromatic shades of grey.

Baron

This photo was taken while our golden retriever, Baron, was sitting at the front door waiting for my wife to come home from work. Natural light in our home is very nice and this particular evening was no exception. X-T1 was the first Fujifilm
camera I have owned and was purchased a few weeks prior to this photo. Being able to see the exact picture in camera is truly amazing; especially when shooting into the light and being able to see the flares before pressing the shutter.
Fujifilm X Series cameras really allow the photographer to see the light, and make the photos they desire. Coming from DSLR world, the EVF instantly had me hooked, and this is the photo where I first felt ‘FujiLove’. The ‘FujiLove’ bug bit me
so hard that I now shoot exclusively Fujifilm and have since upgraded to the X-T2 and X100F. I am grateful for the awesome the FujiLove community and everything Fujifilm is doing to make photography more enjoyable than ever.

Freedom

Living in Quebec City, Canada is a synonym of snowy winter. Here is a quick photo of my brother, riding his snowmobile in the land behind
my house. It was a beautiful morning, we had a little trip in the morning to climb a small mountain in my hometown. When we got back home, I did
some shots of him riding freely his machine. Riding is all about freedom, adrenaline and speed. My picture shows him, alone with himself, being free.

Spiral staircase

It’s been a long time since I’ve wanted to shoot a spiral staircase. I like the architectural and aesthetic side of it. During my last visit to Rome I visited the Vatican museum
and got a chance to shoot one of the most famous spiral staircases in the world - the ‘Momo’ staircase. It was designed by Giuseppe Momo in 1932 and was inspired
by the original Bramante Staircase. It’s a double helix staircase, having two staircases allowing people to ascend without meeting people descending.

A Day at the Beach #2

I came upon this scene as I was walking on the beach near my house in Toronto. What stopped me in my tracks was the compelling randomness of this particular gathering.
The man on the dock photographing the rainbow, the sunbather who is starting to get up from his position, and the dog looking directly at me are unrelated but seemed
comfortable sharing the frame. After I took several shots, all at once, the players went their separate ways and the scene changed.

In early November 2016, one of these chilly fall days in Montréal, I decide to grab my Fujifilm camera and take a walk in the most famous public park of this beautiful city. After a long walk, while
passing in front of this coffee shop, its steamy windows catch my attention. People are reading and having their coffees at the same time. I take a couple of photos from outside, then go in.
I spend some time inside and take more shots while people are passing in front of those huge steamy windows. The results were like oil paintings, very colourful and picturesque.

Cantilevered umbrellas

I was playing with a borrowed Fujifilm X100T and thought I would stick a manual speed light on it and shoot some flowers in the rain and in the dark.
These are Gerbera flowers, and when they get wet they droop downwards, and I shot them from above. So I thought they looked like little umbrellas.

This image was taken one early foggy winter morning in Oelegem in the vicinity of my residence in the province of Antwerp. This is a place on the canal around an ancient fortress of the first world war.
The fort now serves as a reserve for bats. Since 2014, the fort has been the largest bat-conquering reserve in Flanders. The black and white photo editing best responds to my feelings at this lonely moment.
I like to be at one with nature and try to create atmospheric images, which I think I managed here. Doing this generally means paying particular attention to how the light is falling on a scene.

Waiting

Can - or should - photography attempt to be an objective representation of the world around us? Is that even possible, when we can never be certain that we each see the same things
in the same way? Sometimes life is a blur, details are hazy, at other times everything is crisp, sharp and clear. Familiar places and people appear different each day. Photography for me
is a momentary escape, a therapy, an attempt to translate my emotions and physical/mental state into a visual representation of how the world appears at a particular moment in time.

I love travelling by train. It looks like a small society with many people from different social classes,
different jobs, different languages...but they’re all in one train. I took this photo when i went on a train to

When traveling we often wish for the best weather we can get and we dread the dark and rainy days.
I find that these “bad weather” days are when I make my most compelling images. Armed with
the weather-resistant X-Pro2 and the XF35mm f/2 lens all I really had to worry about was wiping off
my eyeglasses. Prague is always a good choice, no matter the weather.

Into Alaska

Visiting Alaska was a huge thrill as a photographer. On many days, like this one, the light would change in seconds. My wife and I traveled in a motorhome
so I had a big window and was high up for a great view of the road ahead. This particular scene lasted for a few moments but I was ready with camera
in hand. Despite the vivid colors in the actual scene, I felt that black and white highlighted the drama of the light much more effectively.

Arctic day - as bright as it gets

It was late November 2016 when the short winters days were quickly turning to the Polar Night here beyond the Arctic Circle. As it had been dark
and overcast for weeks already, my little son started wondering whether the Sun would still be there somewhere. So we decided to do a snow mobile trip
to a fell close-by to find it out and this was the outcome. Yes it really was there but the day did not get any brighter than this. Well worth the trip though.

The Floating Torii

The small island of Miyajima in Japan (literally “shrine island” in Japanese) is particularly known for the iconic Itsukushima Shrine, guarded by its giant Torii gate.
Both the shrine and the torii are built over the water and during high tide they seem to be floating on the sea. With the help of low tide though, the water retreats
from under the temple and I was able to walk on the beach, close enough to get this shot of the Torii after sunset.

Wallpaper

On Friday after the Thanksgiving holiday, my oldest son and I planned a trip to Flaming Geyser State Park in Auburn WA for a “photo hike”. It was a chilly morning and everything was covered with
a beautiful white frost in the open exposed areas. When we got into the trees on the hiking trail, the frost was limited to vegetation on the ground. The look was very appealing to me and I knew
immediately I wanted a shot of the frost on the leaves, so it was just a matter of finding the right spot. I have a couple other images focused on one leaf, but I like the busy randomness of this one.

Helios 1

I felt compelled to photograph Helios, an installation by local Calgary artist Lisa Brawn, during its time at the Leighton Centre for the Arts in 2016. Brawn restored these old coin-
operated mechanical horses, converted them to solar power, and coated them in silver leaf. Horses are a very common sight in the Canadian Rocky Mountain foothills; less so the silver,
solar powered variety. Juxtaposed against a dramatic natural backdrop, it almost felt like they had been released into these idyllic surroundings to enjoy a well-earned retirement.

Smush (from the series “Drift”)

We crave stillness, but move about aimlessly. Once a place of relative calm and routine, our home teeters in a state of fluid negotiation. All of the players are in flux. It’s a study in contrasts: manly muscle
and sagging skin, lustrous hair and graying beards, water and wine, devotion and drift. By midlife, we’ve begun to accept our own inevitable deterioration. Mortality looms, our time here precious. We lose parts of ourselves, in much the same way
as we surely lose the people who surround us – through death, through life, through drift. Our children evolve, their circles ever expanding. They spill forth in every direction, breaking boundaries while we remain. They will never need us as they
once did, when life was new. Like water, smoke, and shadow, the force of circumstance buoys us along. There is darkness here. We drift.

The Mothermilkmaid

I made this self-portrait with my two year old son while nursing, so natural and normal
for me, but unfortunately not always without criticism. During my photography
education I had the assignment to get inspired by the Dutch painter Johannes
Vermeer. His famous painting ‘The Milkmaid’ inspired me to make my own version,
‘The Mothermilkmaid’. The picture reached a lot of people, and I received
so many positive reactions, exactly what I hoped for. My contribution to normalise

I was in a grocery store in Yangjiang, China and saw a group of high school kids heading for the doorway. As I followed them I got off 3 shots, with this being the last in the series.

Every year in the month of January, thousands of pilgrims travel from all over India to take a dip

places, they halt overnight at the transit camp base in Kolkata to get some rest before commencing
on their journey the next morning. This image depicts the head shot of one such pilgrims, who was

Norwegian vibes

Last summer, we went on a 13.000km roadtrip from the Basque Country to the Lofoten islands in Norway. During our adventure,
it rained most of the days, but I didn’t complain since those are the conditions I love to shoot in. I don’t exactly remember where this photo was taken, but
minutes earlier we were in the middle of a storm. Suddenly, we saw the sky lit up and we pulled over to the side of the road and walked to the edge of this
fjord. The atmosphere was pretty special and we were there to experience it.

Little smartypants

I only took pictures in black and white over the last 2 years, because that way I can express myself the best. Another reason is that in black and white the use of light is very important and so magical.
That is why I am addicted to black and white and to the use of natural light. The thing I like to do to make an eye catching picture is to keep it clean. So I’ll take care that the image never gets boring.
Also a clean picture makes sure that all the attention goes to the important things in the picture and not to the side issues. That’s why I love this one of my little smartypants.

Trees in Motion

I saw this group of nearly parallel trees some distance from the road in Coorg, the coffee estate country in the hills of South India. While it looked interesting in the afternoon light, I wanted to
photograph it in a way that was different. The strong wind made the trees sway a little and i wanted to capture this feeling of motion. After trying a few slow shutter speed captures, I decided that
I would pan the camera vertically top to bottom with a slow shutter speed that would give an image with a sense of movement. A speed of 1/10 sec. at f/20 gave me the best result that you see here.
