Equitas Academy K-8 Family Guidance

The health and safety of all of our Equitas scholars and families is our highest priority
and we are taking all measures to ensure we are protecting our Equitas community. We
are currently in Phase 1 of our school closure. To help you and your scholar(s), we
created this guide to support during this challenging time.

What does Phase 1 mean?

Phase 1 is the first step in providing academic support to our students via Remote
Learning. This phase includes the work packets that were distributed and weekly
touchpoints from teachers. This phase is intended to last up to four weeks while we
thoughtfully plan for an extended closure.

Next Step: Phase 2

Over the next couple of weeks, we are working on a plan for how to support students in
this new reality, and facing the possibility that we move into an extended closure. This
next phase will rely more heavily on the use of technology. Stay tuned for further
engagement on this topic in the coming week.

Guidance for Scholars & Families: Content Packet Learning
1. Set up Learning Spaces
● Create or find a place in the home that will be free of distractions.
Remove the television and limit noise. If a room is not available, think
about making an age-appropriate study area on a table with a cardboard
box to block out distractions.
● Ensure appropriate lighting.
● Create ways to keep paperwork organized such as using binders, file
folders, file trays, and bins.

2. Gather Supplies (optional, if needed)

● Learning Materials (worksheet packets)
● pencils
● markers
● scissors
● highlighters
● calculator
● sticky notes
● Extra paper

3. Implementation of Daily Schedule

● Follow or modify the recommended schedule above based on the needs
of your family. Try to make sure the recommended time for each
academic subject is met.
● Post schedule in a visible place.
● Consider using a timer to help scholars stay on track and know how much
time is left in each task.
● Try to get scholars up and moving during break time.

4. FAQ for supporting Scholars

● “What do I do when my scholar does not understand the work?”
○ Try your best to explain the content, don’t just “give” them the
answer.
○ Letting your scholar struggle is OK!
○ If your student still struggles, mark the portion of the
assignment/page where they might need extra help or
clarification from their teacher.

● “What do I do if my scholar doesn’t want to complete the work?”

○ Provide incentives (things they like to do) and extra breaks
○ Inform the teacher so he or she can help message to your scholar
the importance of staying on track.

● “What if they try all day and can’t complete daily work?”
○ Inform the teacher so he or she can help the scholar prioritize the
content each day.

● “What if my scholar finishes each day early?

○ Inform the teacher so they can add more challenge if necessary.
