DESIGN OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAM

Mu = 263 kN.m fy = 420 MPa

β= 0.85 fc' = 28 MPa

Assumed beam dimensions:

BASE (b) = 0.3 meters Cover (bot) = 0.04 meters

Height (h) = 0.4 meters depth (d)= 0.342 meters

Cover (top) = 0.04 meters

d'= 0.058 meters

Diameters of beam reinforcements:

Tension = 0.016 meters Stirrups = 0.01 meters

compression = 0.016 meters

Design Computation

1. Solve for ρmax and Mumax.

ρmax = 0.75ρb
0.75 (0.85𝑓^′
= 𝑐β (600))/(𝑓𝑦(600+
1
𝑓𝑦))
ρmax = 0.02125

ω = ρ 𝑓𝑦/𝑓𝑐

ω= 0.31875

φMnmax= ϕ𝑓^′ 𝑐ωbd2(1-0.59ω)

φMnmax= 228.8478 kN.m

Since φMnmax < Mu, It must be DOUBLY REINFORCED.

PLS. DISREGARD THIS PART. USE DESIGN FOR DOUBLY REINFORCED

2. Design of Singly Reinforced Beam.

a. Calculate the percentage of tensile reinforcement (ρ).

Rn = 𝑀𝑢/(∅𝑏𝑑2)

= 8.3279819

(0.85𝑓^′ 𝑐)/𝑓𝑦 (1− √(1−2𝑅𝑛/(0.85𝑓^′ 𝑐)))

ρ=

ρ= 0.0256203 Compare to values of ρmax and ρmin

b. Check for value of ρmin

* ρmin = 1.4/𝑓𝑦

ρmin = 0.0033333

* ρmin =√(𝑓^′ 𝑐)/4𝑓𝑦

ρmin = 0.0031497

Use higher value of ρmin = 0.003333333333

Since ρmax < ρ, Please Check Your Beam Dimension

c. Compute for Area of Tensile Steel Needed.

As = ρbd

As = #VALUE!
d. Compute number of steel reinforcements.

Using 16 mm. diameter rebars,

number of steel reinforcements = 𝐴𝑠/(𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑟𝑒𝑖𝑛𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡)

number of steel reinforcements = #VALUE! pcs.

Let's say, #VALUE! #VALUE! 16 mm diameter rebars

e. Check if reinforcements yield.

𝑨𝒔𝒇𝒚=𝟎.𝟖𝟓𝒇^′ 𝒄𝒃𝒂

𝐴 𝑓 0.85𝑓^′ 𝑐𝑏)
a= 𝑠 𝑦/(

𝒂= 0.0118272

c= 𝑎/𝛽1

c= 0.0139144

𝒇𝒔=𝟔𝟎𝟎 ((𝒅−𝒄))/𝒄

fs = 14147.362

Since fs > fy, section is ductile and steel yields. Therefore, ∅ = 0.90

f. Check φMn of the beam

𝜑𝑀𝑛= 𝜑𝐴𝑠𝑓𝑦(𝑑−𝑎/2)

𝝋𝑴𝒏= 25.543099836 kN.m

25.5431 kN.m < 263 kN.m

Please Check Your Computations.

2. Design of Doubly Reinforced Beam.

a. Calculate As1.

As1 = ρmaxbd

As1 = 0.0021803 m2 Say, 11

b. Calculate φMn2.

φMn2 = Mu - φMn1

φMn2 = 34.152169 kN.m

c. Solve for As2.

∅𝑀𝑛2=∅𝐴𝑠2𝑓𝑦(𝑑−𝑑^′ )
𝐴𝑠2=(∅𝑀𝑛2)/(∅𝑓𝑦(𝑑−𝑑^′))

A𝑠2 = 0.0003181 m2 Say, 2

d. Solve for As.

As = As1 + As2

As = 0.0024984 m2 Say, 13

e. Calculate c.

𝐴𝑠1𝑓𝑦=0.85𝑓^′ 𝑐𝑏𝑎

𝑎= 𝐴𝑠1𝑓𝑦/(0.85𝑓^′ 𝑐𝑏)
𝒂= 0.12825 m

c= 𝑎/𝛽1

c= 0.1508824 m

f. Check if compression steel yields.

𝑓^′ 𝑠=(600(𝑐−𝑑^′))/𝑐

𝑓′ 𝑠 = 369.35673 MPa < 420 MPa

Since f's<fy, Compression Steel will not yield. Therefore, use value of f's.

g. Calculate value of As'

𝐴𝑠^′=∅𝑀𝑛2/𝑓𝑠(𝑑−𝑑^′ )

As' = 0.0003256 m2 Say, 2

g. Check beam ductility using assumed number and diameter of rebars.

For Tensile Reinforcement:

𝐴𝑠1𝑓𝑦/(0.85𝑓^′ 𝑐𝑏)
𝑎=

𝒂= 0.1300992 m

c= 𝑎/𝛽1

c= 0.1530579 m

𝑓𝑠=600 ((𝑑−𝑐))/𝑐

fs = 740.66927

Since fs > fy, section is ductile and steel yields. Therefore,

For Compression Reinforcement:

𝑓^′ 𝑠=(600(𝑐−𝑑^′))/𝑐

𝑓′ 𝑠 = 372.63504 MPa > 420 MPa

Since f's<fy, Compression Steel will yield. Therefore, f's=fy so use value of fy.

h. Check beam capacity.

∅𝑀𝑛=∅𝑀𝑛1+∅𝑀𝑛2

∅𝑀𝑛= 𝜑𝐴𝑠𝑓𝑦(𝑑−𝑎/2) + 𝜑𝐴𝑠^′ 𝑓^′ 𝑠(𝑑−𝑑′)

269.498998535119 kN.m

Since φMn > Mu, the BEAM IS SAFE.

pcs 16 mm. diameter rebars

pcs 16 mm. diameter rebars

pcs 16 mm. diameter rebars

pcs 16 mm. diameter rebars

∅ = 0.90
s=fy so use value of fy.

> 263 kN.m

Mu, the BEAM IS SAFE.
