Comparative Study in Capturing Photos and taking

Down Notes in Pre-Calculus during Class Hours of

S.T.E.M. Student in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng
Valenzuela

Introduction:
“The quantity of notes is related to how much information they retain”
(Nye,Crooks,ponley,& Tripp, 1984).
During pre-calculus class students often losing concentration to what the
math problem should be done, students prefer a detailed manner solution for as
the student to answer the math problem correctly. Some student take a photo
and the other student taking down notes both are intended to gather information
and to save the solution to solve a math problem.
The traditional way of gathering data is to take down notes, students’
needs to take down the detailed information to solve a math problem, the notes
should be concise, clear, and accurate. It should show the organization of the
text, and should show the relationship between ideas (Using English for
Academic Purposes,n.d). When the students taking down notes they often
remember more of what they learn in classes and also using the hand or
applying a physical activity to encode or storing information through words the
information stays as a long term memory (Nye, Crooks, Ponley, & Tripp, 1984).
However, the advancement in technology such as tablets, computers, mobile
applications etc. which affects the student’s way of composing and reviewing the
class notes they tend to take photo because of the three (3) positive attributes
which is speed, legibility, and search ability (Stacy, 2015). The student consider
taking photos as the alternative way of saving information or can be classified as
a straight-lecture, many of the student take photos rather than to write the
mathematical solution for the accurateness they wanted to received (Danielson
G., Preast V., Bender H., Hassall L., 2013).
The aim of the researchers is to give the student a knowledge to the
usage of taking photo and when to write down notes. By observation the way
they perform in the class discussion and how they scope out to the topic, student
use more often use offloaded information for computational models due to
decreasing of cognitive demand on memory (Risko and Gilbert, 2016, Wegner,
1987). For example student might write down crucial information such as math
problem and type it into smartphone then later they attempt to find again the way
on how the math problem solve this strategy on how they use physical activity to
retain the information is “cognitive offloading” for as the student use it to alter for
memorization of the student(Risko et al., 1987).
The researcher findings support a close link between writing notes and
taking a photo to retain the solution for a math problem about memory
performance

Statement of the problem:

Now a days technologies are powerful tool. It helps to use faster out
work, some of students are taking photos of notes and some student are still
doing the old way of taking down notes:
1. How does capturing photo affects the learnings of the students during
pre-calculus?
2. How does taking down notes affects the learnings of the students
during pre-calculus?
3. How does taking down notes differ from the capturing photos as a
learning style of the students?

Significance of the study

Students: the research will be beneficial to the STEM students because through this,
they will get to know which method is more effective and precise in learning pre-calculus
lessons.

Teachers: the research will also benefit the teachers because they will know more and
understand the preferred learning method of their students, which can help them to adjust their
teaching style in able cope up with their students.

The school: the research can be beneficiary to the school because through this, the
school will be able to know the best method that implies in their students, in this way the school
can make adjustments in their strategies.

Scope and limitation of the study:

This study focuses on comparing the learning efficiency of S.T.E.M.
students in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela with regards in capturing
photo and writing lesson in Pre-Calculus subject. The other student which do not
use either of the two stated methods do not all as part of the scope of the
research, this will be done through the use of questionnaire to the students that
will serve as a reference in collecting data by this strategy the researchers will be
able to know the effects of both strategy to the respondents.
