SMART BUILDING

Introduction:
Sensors and wireless sensor networks are being deployed in
smart home solutions, measuring with precision the
environmental conditions in the home environment. Their
sensing functionalities and their increasing accuracy helps in
developing of smart home applications that offer automation.
Smart Home automation, aims to promote the energy
consumption , efficiency and safety in domestic scenarios. In
this exhibit a smart home automation system is developed, for
monitoring and controlling of the temperature degree, humidity
percentage, gas leakage and fire in the house.

Description:
Aim:
The purpose of the project is to continuously sense the
different sensor values and provide necessary alerting in the
house or industrial areas.

Material Required:
1. Power supply
2. Micro-controller Board(Arduino UNO)
3. Temperature & Humidity Sensor
4. Gas Sensor
5. Flame sensor
6. Buzzer
7. LEDs for indication

Preparation:
By using this project we can detect parameters like occurrence
of any fire or gas leakage or temperature values continuously
and alert the people if those values crosses the threshold limit.

In this project we have three sensors :

• Temperature sensor to detect temperature degree &
Humidity percentage .
• Gas sensor to detect gas leakage.
• Fire sensor to detect fire.

These values are continuously monitored by the micro

controller.
If any gas/fire detection occurs or temperature value crosses
threshold limit then intimation will be given to the surrounding
people by means of buzzer.
By making use of these kinds of projects we can provide safety
in houses, offices and industries.

Precautions:
1. Use the setup in a well ventilated place when testing the gas
leakage.

Working method:
Power Supply:

6 of 9
A 9v DC power supply is used for this project.

Micro Controller Board (Arduino

UNO):
The Arduino Uno is an open-
source micro controller
board based on
the Microchip ATmega328P micro
controller and developed
by Arduino.cc. The board is
equipped with sets of digital and
analog input/output (I/O) pins that may be interfaced to
various expansion boards (shields) and other circuits. The
board has 14 digital I/O pins (six capable of PWM output), 6
analog I/O pins, and is programmable with the Arduino
IDE (Integrated Development Environment), via a type B USB
cable. It can be powered by the USB cable or by an
external 9-volt battery, though it accepts voltages between 7
and 20 volts.

Gas Sensor:
A gas sensor is a device which
detects the presence or concentration
of gases in the atmosphere. Based on
the concentration of the gas the
sensor produces a corresponding
potential difference by changing the resistance of the material
inside the sensor, which can be measured as output voltage.
Based on this voltage value the type and
concentration of the gas can be estimated.
In this exhibit we use MQ-6 Gas sensor
which detects the presence of LPG and
Butane.

Temperature and Humidity sensor:

7 of 9
The DHT11 is a commonly used Temperature and humidity
sensor. The sensor comes with a dedicated NTC to measure
temperature and an 8-bit micro controller to output the values
of temperature and humidity as serial data. The sensor is also
factory calibrated and hence easy to interface with other micro
controllers.
The sensor can measure temperature from 0°C to 50°C and
humidity from 20% to 90% with an accuracy of ±1°C and
±1%.

Flame Sensor:
A flame-sensor is one kind of
detector which is mainly designed for
detecting as well as responding to the
occurrence of a fire or flame. The
flame detection response can depend
on its fitting. It includes an alarm system, a natural gas line,
propane & a fire suppression system. The
response of these sensors is faster as well as
more accurate compare with a heat/smoke
detector because of its mechanism while
detecting the flame.

Buzzer:
A buzzer or beeper is an audio signalling device, which may be
mechanical, electromechanical, or piezoelectric (piezo for
short). Typical uses of buzzers and beepers include alarm
devices, timers, and confirmation of user input
such as a mouse click or keystroke.

LED:
A light-emitting diode (LED) is
a semiconductor light source that emits light
when current flows through it. Electrons in
the semiconductor recombine with electron
holes, releasing energy in the form
of photons. The colour of the light (corresponding to the energy

of the photons) is determined by the energy required for
electrons to cross the band gap of the semiconductor. White
light is obtained by using multiple semiconductors or a layer of
light-emitting phosphor on the semiconductor device.

Advantages
1. Accident free homes from fire and gas.
2. Energy saving on electronic and electrical devices when not
needed

Disadvantages
1. Many sensors are required if there are many rooms in the
house. As the walls acts as barriers.
3. Flame sensor cannot be used in kitchen as the sensor does
not have an intelligence to detect if the fire is triggered
intentionally or accidentally.

Applications
1. Can be used in industries to avoid accidents happening from
fire or gas leakage
4. The system is flexible and economical.

Future Development
1. This exhibit can further developed using Internet Of Things,
so as to remotely operate the electronic devices present in
the home such as switching ON the AC, etc.
5. This exhibit can also be further developed by adding more
sensors such as Motion detector, rain sensor, LDR (Light
Dependent Resistor), etc where various parameters can be
observed and controlled.
